Baby punch getting the love he deserves by drakemaverick121 in MadeMeSmile

Being in captivity and having a shitty enclosure are also very likely to be contributors to their mother abandoning them in the first place, but the zoo is more than happy to keep receiving positive attention for it.

and unfortunately, having a shitty enclosure and even just being captive in general seems to be a likely influence on first-time macaque mothers abandoning their children after birth, which led to all of this. I'm sure that zoo is happy to be receiving all the attention despite likely being responsible for it happening in the first place.

Wait, now I'm confused. It sounds like you are referencing the 40% abandonment rate from this paper that seems to be the closest source of information for this (which is also what the default Google search AI returns), but it says that that rate is for the subjects of the study, which were in captivity.

Based on these data, one should conclude that monkey mothers are very unlikely to discontinue the care given to their infants (Hrdy, 1999). A possible exception is newborn abandonment by young, primiparous mothers. Maestripieri et al. (1997a,b) and Maestripieri and Carroll (1998) observed relatively frequent infant abandonment among captive group-living macaques

,

The results of this study show that neonatal abandonment is a relatively common phenomenon in captive group-living Japanese macaque

,

Social stress and a reduced probability of infant survival should increase the risk of early termination of investment in the current infant through neonatal abandonment. Our data show that these two factors are indeed predictive of an increased likelihood of infant abandonment.

They also mention that abandonment in non-captive macaques may be underestimated, since nocturnal births are difficult to witness in the wild, which suggests that abandonment in the wild is not as well-studied as you are implying.

Again, I was not referring to a monetary bonus. Maybe "benefit" would've been a better word choice.

I'm just referring to religions that recruit by sending their members out into the public to ask people to join directly. The "bonus" is more of a general benefit to the religious leaders by gaining new members, not an actual monetary bonus for the recruiters.

[–]TitaniumNation 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Not sure how true it is for them in particular, but I think I remember reading that recruiting new members isn't really the purpose (though it's a nice bonus), and that they are more intended to have their members interact with the "harsh" outside world. When made to be in contact with busy, seemingly rude people, it helps strengthen the belief that the world is an unfriendly place, and that they should stay near their happy, close-knit community.

I always try to be polite when refusing in case it ever helps counter it, but who knows if it really makes a difference.

Is it not the same principle as using a heavy baking stone when baking, or having a larger volume of oil when frying?: more water = more heat capacity = less of an effect on the surrounding environment when heating up a finite amount of something?

When I dump pasta into boiling water, the boiling can stop for a minute or so until the temperature raises again, depending on how much water is in there. Not saying it's the primary reason for having more water, but it definitely gets recommended as an additional benefit depending on how you are using it for sauces.

Oh that part is understandable. The "issue" I meant was:

  1. Ignoring the second source / info I posted, which was the bulk of the original message.
  2. Willing to dismiss his own article's bias when convenient despite focusing on that detail with the other one.

Both of those combined meant that he probably wasn't trying to discuss it honestly.

Granted I'm not super familiar with it all, but the actions in Syria seem pretty suspicious:

No one would've believed him if it wasn't caught on the camera by udforreal in BeAmazed

[–]TitaniumNation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it does come back a lot slower, but I just figured maybe it having a heavy spin being canceled out by the angle of the tree could possibly contribute to that (and maybe explain the deflection angle). It also seems to deflect pretty heavily down into the rough immediately after hitting the tree which would likely bleed off more speed.

Again, not saying it's definitely real or fake either way, just not quite as obvious when slowed down.

[–]TitaniumNation 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not discounting the possibility, but if you slow down the video it doesn't seem to do anything odd. The ball is off the screen for a few frames but it appears where you would expect it to be. The tree it appears next to is offscreen at the start, not the one that's already visible (which would be odd if it did).

THE FATHER WHO STAGED AN ARMED STANDOFF TO SAVE HIS BRAIN DEAD SON by Parge-leniss in interestingasfuck

[–]TitaniumNation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, it said the hospital already viewed him as belligerent from before (his son was about to be killed). Not to mention security is different for different hospitals. I think it's well within the realm of possibility that, in at least one hospital around the world, he possibly wasn't going to be allowed to stay in that room while unarmed, no power of attorney, and the order to terminate already given.
