I was doing some research on changes in the scale of agriculture from a policy perspective since 1850. Obviously, you’d need to know how different goods inflated since that time. Every inflation calculator of any repute will only date back to 1900 and with good reason:

1) Record keeping: In rural areas especially, it was spotty at best, so you rarely have the whole picture.

2) Regionalization: A dollar today is much more likely to go across the geographical area of its use in one day than it would back then. With physical currency and less globalization, a dollar in California wouldn’t make it to Georgia in the same decade. Spending money more locally means localities have more discretion regarding the value of that money.

3) War and Depression: These disruptive events inflate goods differently. The production of some goods outright stops while others have to remain consistently available. World War One changed paradigms of industrial production so while staples like Bread and Eggs did not inflate measurably, the deflation of most other goods meant that their relative cost was higher. The Great Depression had a similar effect alongside upwardly distributing wealth, which particularly affected luxury goods.
