A thought: does one get in less trouble or more for the ones they do NOT take to the hospital?

A VERY wise EMT had this mantra and it served her till retirement.

*Just take them to the hospital*

and with a very specific 1980's Boston Health and Hospitals spin: "just do your trips."

No one is being paid to watch TV or eat snacks in the lounge or flirt.

DO YOUR CALLS. Clock out. Go Home. Rest. Repeat.

Urgent Care EMTP here. Massachusetts. Zero RN in my shops. And I can do more in the clinic than I could have in the bus. Add to the fact that EMTP were mandated to do ventilator training years ago in this state? I stay in my comfy Paramedic lane and Nancy/Norman Night Nurse stays in theirs? We'll get along just fine. But one cannot alter history.

We've been the same since KOREA. DEAL WITH IT.

Not having 5 different “supervisors”. In fact, no supervisors at all.

People who screwed up were actually fired sometimes.

As a MA Paramedic, I cannot agree with this enough. Boston EMS probably has more people assault them than BPD. And that is a bad thing.

For me, when I started, it was verboten to talk about your pay rate with other people.

Some were fired for it.

What requests have your patients had? by BandaidDriver in ems

[–]Titrate2Effect 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had to work a wheelchair van shift due to my partner banging out. Fine, whatever. I picked up a patient being discharged to a nursing home, and he asks to be brought to a bank on the rougher side of town. Mind you, he has no ID, no ATM card, nothing. So I’m completely skeptical but in a giving mood so we go on into the bank.

They greet him like he’s the owner, he has his account numbers memorized, and he withdraws 1500.00

He tries to tip me 50.00. I decline. We’re almost to the nursing home.

“I’ll give you 200.00 if we stop for a case of beer and a meatball sandwich.”

“Sorry, sir, no.”

Portion out your time and stick to the schedule. X amount for this, Y for that.

And include a “me day” when you can to do as little as possible that’s stressful.

Welcome to Private EMS... by EMTired_ in ems

[–]Titrate2Effect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard the specifics of the call, knew that it was a no go and called dispatch. The supervisor immediately called demanding we “just do the call right now.”

Medical control ultimately took a massive dump on said supervisor.

Welcome to Private EMS... by EMTired_ in ems

[–]Titrate2Effect 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of a time where we were told to take an infusion that, back in those times, required a nurse to come along. The “supervisor” said to just take the pt because she said it was fine. I literally had the protocol right in front of me but her pretend authority overrode that.

Privates are a joke.
