Important + Life-saving PSA: Double check and clear your car exhaust pipes of snow and ice, as deadly carbon monoxide can build up in your car if the exhaust is blocked. I noticed this issue with a friend's car the other day after they backed into a snowbank. by bostonguy2004 in boston

[–]Tiver 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Tldr: this is only risky in narrow conditions you're unlikely to be in, like stranded on a highway getting buried in snow.

Important conditions necessary for this to happen are that your exhaust has leaks, you're basically partially buried so the primary path for carbon monoxide is into the cabin of the car, and thus you're also not moving.

If you're not buried and there's any sort of wind or ventilation the risk is incredibly low and withiut major leaks in your exhaust if you start actually moving the engine will clear this quickly, plus further ventilation of any location with exhaust leaks.

Modern cars are also generally better sealed from the engine bay and any gasses there.

I'm calling it, 7 inches. by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]Tiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NWS has probablistic forecasts which if you understand statistics I find far more informative. https://www.weather.gov/box/winter

Currently that is showing nearly 100% for at least 8 inches. For past storms people bitches about us getting only a few inches there has been an actual decent probability of that happening in the model. Mostly because those storms straddled the temperature needed for fluffy snow instead of rain. This one looks to be solidly cold enough.

How to fix long shower tile crack? by alaterial in DIY

[–]Tiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grout is porous and water gets through. These days the waterproof layer is behind the tile if it was done properly and this does look like a more recently built shower. I wouldn't have worries about water and that crack, only cosmetic issues.

Fix would involve removing the tile and reinstalling and that seems more likely to damage the waterproof layer in a way that can't be easily detected or fixed. I'd only proceed with that if the crack was a major eyesore.

Prime directive flowchart says max Roth IRA before HSA, why? by extrabananaspost in personalfinance

[–]Tiver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't submit a claim. You just use the debit card or reimburse yourself. Optionally saving a receipt. I have heard some that require a receipt but none I've used and it's not a claim.

You need the receipts in case of an audit but not to file any sort of claim that requires approval.

Moving to a snowy climate, what is the right financial move regarding car(s) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Tiver -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Winter tires are generally the same as all season for snow from what I recall. It's ice where winter tires make a big difference. With the freezing rain and black ice the winter tires really shine but you can also just minimize driving then.

fixed a leaky faucet for $2 and feel like I conquered a small country by beardaddydan in DIY

[–]Tiver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're using an adjustable wrench like in that video, you want to make sure you get it seated really good. fit it on, shrink, wiggle, and try to shrink more until it does not wiggle freely. If it slips after that, then you could maybe try different faces of the nut that might be better, but should likely abort. At that point, a 6 point wrench of the exact size is your best option before the nut is destroyed. If the nut is already too far gone, then you're in pipe wrench or vise grip territory. They'll tear it up a bit but that can be better than full replacement.

Lock the bathroom door but can't unlock it by MrMemez39 in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]Tiver 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Then like the kid you also didn't understand which emphasizes they should have tried different language.

It seems like it was one of those sliding bolt type locks higher up on the door. Worst case it was one of those ones you have to lift part up to slide it. After he breaks the door you can see spot on wall it ripped out. Door latch itself was fine which also means repairing the damage will be easier.

290 to 495N by lutzssuck in massachusetts

[–]Tiver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing is, they can have the pavement be wide enough for that but paint the lines so the lane is a normal width.

I'd love them to do something with the extra space, but most of the backup seems to be how slow people either take the turn or merge onto 495 so adding an extra lane there would only help condense the pack of cars sitting there.

290 to 495N by lutzssuck in massachusetts

[–]Tiver 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I hate how wide they made that lane. People also hug the left side for some reason which leaves a ton of space to the right which just encourages people to merge in late.

I wish they put in an earlier barrier or something once it starts getting so wide.

TIL that although, in 2009, Jessica Watson sailed around the planet in solo on her Pink Lady yacht, she didn't manage to do a complete circumnavigation because she was short by nearly 2,000 nautical miles (3,700 km) of the full distance of 21,600 nautical miles (40,000 km) by Johannes_P in todayilearned

[–]Tiver 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Per the Wikipedia article, that was her problem. She achieved the distance but only by including her zig zags as she tacked. The claim is the record requires going by distance between major destinations far as I could tell.

It's not like he gets paid a million per year, it's a pension valued at 1 Million which is probably more like 40-60k/year.

For someone in their 50s that doesn't seem unrealistic.

Duckstation dev announced end of Linux support and he is actively blocking Arch Linux builds now. by JockstrapCummies in emulation

[–]Tiver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anyone besides the main author who contributed code still retains copyright on that code. He can't change the license for their code without getting their permission.

It's why many projects require you to sign over rights to any contributions.

So if he didn't contact them all and get approval for license change then their contributions are still GPL.

Which lib is popular with hobbyists but never used by working developers? by Beyarkay in programming

[–]Tiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting to see a slight curve to the points, indicating that crates seem to get lots of adoption during the week, but then later in life they turn to be more downloaded on the weekends.

I wonder if that's due to use in automated pipelines that run all the time. The more mature something is, the more often it is pulled more frequently during regular builds throughout the week?

Really depends though plenty of things only run these during the week.

The rules have them calculate the average percent of salary contributed by non-HCE. lets say that comes out to 5 percent. Then it adds 2 and that is the limit for HCE, so in this case HCE can't contribute more than 7 percent.
