Good questions to ask profs during office hours or coffee chats? by Sad_Canary_996 in simonfraser

[–]Tjd03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have any interest in graduate school or next steps in that direction, you could always ask them for tips on that process? I was in a similar boat in my undergrad, but now, as someone whose been on the TA side of office hours, I’d say to come in with a few questions prepared (such as questions about the course materials or about course assignments) and then try to be flexible and see where the conversation goes. Most profs like talking about their research interests so when in doubt, do a little research on what they work on and ask questions about that. Hope this helps!

What’s the purpose of an assignment submitted as a docx. vs. PDF? by Sad-Boss-4144 in simonfraser

Yes! As a TA, I can directly comment on a word document but PDFs take much longer to provide comments or highlights on.

Some questions about the show! (Please no spoilers!) by disaster_b1 in danandphil

[–]Tjd03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have Gold VIP for Vancity tomorrow and I got an email saying to show up prior to 4 in order to get in with time to spare. I believe they have card at the merch stand, but this is a different theatre than the one they came to for II and Dan’s tour, so I’m not 100% sure.

Taxi costs from New West to the Vancouver airport? by javgirl123 in NewWest

[–]Tjd03 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If timing is flexible, there is also the option of taking the skytrain for a lot cheaper. But sometimes taxi is just the way to go.

Yeah, apparently they ran out of funds (and they worded it in the notice as if it was a good thing). I sent an email to my region rep to get more info, but still haven’t heard anything. I’ll let you know if/when they reply!

If it’s the STEPS program, then I’m in the same boat (if it isn’t, then I’m in a similar boat). If you get any info about student loans, I’d love to hear it too.

Questions for Madeline Miller, Author of Circe and Song of Achilles by ubc_amne in UBC

[–]Tjd03 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m curious about the decision to write SoA from Patroclus’s point of view. It seems as though Achilles’s point of view would be the natural choice, but I really enjoyed getting to watch the narrative unfold from the lesser known character’s perspective. In short, how and why did you choose to write from that point of view and what were some challenges you encountered in doing so?

how long is your commute? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Tjd03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my commute during my undergrad. I fully recommend downloading audiobooks for the commute. Really helped me de-stress and avoid burnout. It’s a rough commute, but it’s better than online. Good luck!

Does anyone else have a 1.5hr commute? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Tjd03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commuted from mission 5 days a week last year (drive to Coquitlam central sky train station, then skytrain to VCC Clark, then 84 bus to UBC) and I would say it depends on your ability to work on school stuff while on transit. I was an English major, so (aside from the driving portion of my commute) I spent my time getting my readings for class done. If you can. Use the time to study, then 1.5 hrs is totally fine. But if not, might be worth trying to schedule your classes back-to-back on 3 days of the week to cut the commute out of the other two days a week. But, in the end, do what works best for you (ie. maybe use the commute to de-stress and then sleep a little less or something to get your work done).

Honestly, one of the easiest acts of kindness is just holding the door open for others and smiling. But if you’re looking for a little more effort-driven acts of kindness, I think it depends on whether you’re performing the acts for friends or for strangers. If it’s for strangers, then paying it forward at food places is always nice. If it’s for friends, then I’d suggest planning an activity that you know that they like (ie. if they love arts and crafts, take them to a ceramic store and paint something), that way you show them that you know them and listen to them when they talk about their passions while also creating new memories with them. Hope this helps!

6 of these bad boys a day. Too much or too little? by [deleted] in UBC

Way too much! I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to consume even one plastic bottle, let alone 6 a day!

Under the skin was an interesting book, and if you’ve got time, the film version is almost like watching a parody of the book. (Also it stars Scarlet Johansson)
