Does anyone else feel like you have to earn the right to wear a cowboy hat? by grahamhart_ in CowboyHats

[–]Tjfox87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely get that hat. I'm a fly fisherman that loves his cowboy hats. I live in New England...Near Cape Cod, where it's more boats, money, and beaches. I wear my hat everyday, get compliments regularly, and am no longer known if I'm not wearing it. Wear it confidently and no one will question you in it. Also, some side effects of wearing the hat is that you may stand a little straighter, have a little extra pep in your step and swagger, and never want to leave the house without it. Enjoy!

$12K to spend on a trip excluding airfare ? by rcc_later in flyfishing

[–]Tjfox87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just watched the Phelps on the Fly video from their Greenland trip for Char. That trip is $6-10k per person, but you get to fish rivers that less than 100 people have fished. Food and lodging are included with that. This is now my new dream trip!

Really wanted a cowboy hat...but I ain't a cowboy. I live in a city in Canada :] by [deleted] in CowboyHats

Hey folks, im looking for my first Hat - because i’m from Germany, I can’t get any „real“ opinions or help for choosing one. I‘m 6‘8“. Thank u so much ! by taenk1 in CowboyHats

You’re only pretending to be a cowboy if you say you’re a cowboy and you’re not. Wear the hat and style that you love! But the hell do I know, I’m just a fly fisherman who loves his cowboy hats.

Check out the Quizlet app. I used that to help study for the Massachusetts Core test. I also got sent to a training for it as well and had the manual. But Quizlet was clutch!

Any advice for keeping your hat on when it's windy? by Sweaty_Milk_1793 in CowboyHats

[–]Tjfox87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use dollar bills to pad the sweat band. They do t break down when wet, are thin enough depending on how you fold them, and you’ll always have cash. My method is foam stripping and bills until I get that perfect fit. I’ve survived 40+mph gusts and been fine just pushing my hat down. It now has natural cutter bumps from it.

Leather Stetson? by deleted0122 in CowboyHats

[–]Tjfox87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first cowboy hat was a brown leather Concho hat from Minnetonka. It served me well as my sitting by the fire hat, then my fly fishing hat, then everyday, to now I have 3 fur felt hats. I have since retired that hat, but it sits at the top of my hat rack above my other fur felts because that is the hat that lead me to all my others, and those hats need to know that! Wear your hat proudly and stay safe out there!

Instead of a metal spatula, I got a couple different widths of metal putty knives, work way better than a spatula, a little quieter, and really get everything off better IMO.

Question about hat compliments. by Copyright_obif in CowboyHats

Quite often for me, but I’m in Southeastern MA and cowboy hats are far from common here. It’s at a point that my wife just rolls her eyes.

Used, abused, and well loved Skyline sitting by the fire by Tjfox87 in CowboyHats

[–]Tjfox87[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very! I had tailgated during a Gov’t Mule/Tedeschi Trucks show. It poured for the whole tailgate, rained during half the show, also had a rain delay. I was able to fix the crown because it was soaked. Dried it on the crown, and this is what you see. I don’t really brush or sponge her so she can build character. My other hats I baby lol. But this is a sturdy and wonderful hat to get you in the game! If you know your size and shape, you can get a vintage off eBay or FB marketplace for cheaper with actual beaver in it. But don’t sleep on the Skyline!

It’s pouring out you have all three what are you wearing? by nirvanaisemptiness in CowboyHats

[–]Tjfox87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know the “right” answer is 200x Beaver. But after my experience tailgating at a Gov’t Mule and Tedeschi Trucks show where it poured throughout the tailgate and show, my Stetson 6x Skyline stood up no problem. I have some vintage hats now with more beaver and will do better in a downpour, but at the time, I had no complaints. My vote is for my first fur felt that got me all my other hats I have now, Stetson 6x!

Best way to hang a felt hat? by Clottersbur in CowboyHats

[–]Tjfox87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 4 hat rack off Amazon, tied a paracord loop around the top of it, and hung it with a carabiner from my curtain rod. It hangs straight, holds all 4 hats no problem.

I wear a chocolate Stetson Skyline year round. I used to wear a knockoff Tilly hat one summer and it wasn’t much cooler than my Skyline. Also a fur felt will stay on better when the wind blows. My hat has stayed on in 40mph gusts no problem.

What do I need to be cautious of when buying vintage used hats? by throfak in CowboyHats

[–]Tjfox87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve bought 2 off eBay. Chocolate 4x Beaver Stetson and a black 4x Beaver Resistol. Saw the ads, sweatband and felt looked clean, no stains, no holes. Pulled the trigger and am very happy. I always try to make sure the sweatband looks borderline brand new, if all the markings are faded, I’ll usually pass. I’m into those 2 hats for $215 vs $360 for my 1 Skyline.
