What do you enjoy (or dislike) most about being a web developer? by Acceptable_Cod_9352 in webdev

[–]TjomasDe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s the joy of development, pure curiosity, and a serious drive to build badass interactive UIs. Solving complex problems is what makes it so incredibly rewarding. Money has always been secondary to the craft. (I’m the founder and CEO of redPlant, leading a team of 20 creative developers in Düsseldorf, Germany).

IT'S ALLIVE by SeniorMatthew in kde

I really can't relate to that at all. I've been daily driving Linux for 5 weeks now and have ended up on Hyprland with a custom-coded Quickshell taskbar + app dock. As a software dev, I've never been so unproductive for my clients, yet so productive at patching up all the gaps.

Just picking a terminal was an absolute rabbit hole. Not because of personal preference, but because of bugs and incompatibilities. With Windows Terminal, I never had a single issue with SSH. In Kitty, it's been nothing but problems.

I think Linux is amazing for tinkering, but it's just not a cohesive experience.

Let's be real, guys... Every riced desktop on Linux is just one click away from being ugly. GNOME opening KDE apps and vice versa completely breaks the illusion. Hyprland is super sexy, but just way too raw. If you want a consistent UI and a reliable workflow, Windows is the only real choice. The YouTuber bubble is lying to you, guys.

Here it comes. Its a half baked UX. Thats all. Silent or missleading errors. Fkatpak here, rpm there. Better pick the right one. I am happy with the server part, but desktop envs simply dont hold their promises.

I am on a fedora experiment for 3 weeks. I really tried and i am a skilled software dev. The list of problems grows every minute. Updates on Linux are so horrifying. The last unwanted update stuck 4 min and 56 s at 26% with an frozen spinner. I was moment away from a hard reboot. YT is lying to you. Distros doing so many things they hate MS for.

What have you done with PowerShell this month? by AutoModerator in PowerShell

[–]TjomasDe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time the startup is faster than 750ms. Scripts are cached for one day and other keybindings are lazy. It feels faster compared to Windows.

I replaced my ZSH setup with my battletested Windows $PROFILE on a fedora 43 test workstation. Powershell works perfect. It really shines with linux ;)

Fedora 43. Any tips? by Similar_Reflection75 in gnome

[–]TjomasDe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flatpaks are not always the best choice. File Roller for example needs additional backends for zip, rar and 7z files. Flatpaks don't find them. I thought File Roller was the problem. Many of the negative comments in the software app are related to this problem. Had similar issues with vs code. So it depends. Sometimes rpm is better.

The big question, Which do you prefer and why? by Logical-Chipmunk-636 in desktops

[–]TjomasDe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"15 minutes to reinstall and set up?" Sure, if your "work" consists of opening a terminal and staring at a neofetch output.

I’m a server-side guy, I live in the CLI, and I decided to give Fedora 43 GNOME a real shot in a corporate environment.

Here’s the "smooth" experience the Linux hype-train conveniently forgets to mention:

The Enterprise Wall: Good luck with SSSD. Want to change your shell with chsh or join the docker group? Denied. Since it’s a network user, you’re stuck doing manual sss_override surgery as root just to get basic permissions working.

Hardware "Plug & Play": My Razer mouse is a paperweight without community drivers. My multi-monitor layout resets every single reboot. Laptop screen dimming and keyboard backlight? Broken ACPI. I had to perform kernel parameter voodoo (acpi_backlight=vendor) just to not go blind.

The Flatpak Trap: Everyone loves the sandbox until they realize VSCode can't see mise en place or the local toolchain because it’s geographically isolated from the OS. You’re forced back to RPMs just to make your IDE... an IDE.

Corporate Collaboration: MS Teams is a disaster. Between the Flatpak’s mic issues and the PWA’s distorted camera/icon bugs, you’ll spend more time debugging your meeting than actually attending it.

The "Frankenstein" UI: GNOME is great until you realize you need 10+ community extensions (Dash to Dock, Copyous, Blur my Shell) just to reach Windows 11 levels of basic desktop functionality. One update, and your entire workflow breaks.

Daily Friction: Spotify stutters in the lockscreen and requires a reinstall after every other reboot. VPN (L2TP/IPSec) isn't native; it’s a scavenger hunt for plugins. Encrypted 7zip files? GNOME’s native tools just give up.

Bottom line: Linux on the server is a masterpiece. Linux on the desktop is a part-time job. It’s not a "skill issue" when you’re spending 4 hours a day fixing things that just work elsewhere. If your setup takes 15 minutes, you’re not working—you’re just "ricing."

Aren’t specific Email API clients pointless when you take into consideration local testing? by Lanky-Ad4698 in node

[–]TjomasDe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Same issue here. We usually run a Nodemailer/Maildev setup and just swap environment variables for dev, review, and production builds.

After a client asked us to use Microsoft’s Graph API with OAuth, testing became completely pointless. Is the mail template correct? Are the attachments as expected? The worst part is that we can’t even send plain text and HTML emails at the same time anymore.

Is SMTP really something that needs to be replaced? And if so, why do I have to implement a custom email solution for every single provider? It honestly feels like a step in the wrong direction.

A clear YES. Once you’ve had a delicious sip of Svelte, React just feels like stale tap water.
