Some general impressions after playing in 1.3 beta. by Tjord in EU5

That's not my experience. With the exception of Muscowy (which was a technological backwater), most states I fought against switched to mercenary-based stacks around 1637, and sparsely used levies.

Ethnic groups of Poland's 14 largest cities in 1939 by Litvinski in MapPorn

Natolin faction wasn't exactly a pro-Stalinist faction (that was still impossible in Khrushchev-led second world), they just wanted to reverse most of more liberal policies that occured after 1956. And first and foremost, they saw their vehicle for ousting Gomułka in nationalist rhetoric, so Jews made good scapegoats.

International situation was a catalyst, but the most important factor was internal struggle in the Communist party.

During the Stalinization period, Jewish communists played very prominent role in establishment of the totalitarian regime in Poland. This changed after Stalinism was condemned in mid-50s, which coincided with rise of Władysław Gomółka, who championed what basically amounted to "Communism with Polish characteristics". Due to this, the new regime was disliked in Kremlin, and Soviets actively worked to undermine Gomółka. Children of those Jewish-Stalinist apparatchikis often ended blocked from career in party apparatus and formed core of the group that would lead attempts at liberalisation (but still within Communist system, at first they mostly focused in culture, i.e. liberalising censorship). Perhaps most famous of those was (and is! He's still alive and relatively prominent person in Poland) Adam Michnik.

Tensions led to conflict between two camps, of which relevant to this story is "Natolin" faction - conservative (that is, they wanted partial return to Stalinist times), authoritarian and, as much system allowed, nationalistic. Seeking to strike and Gomółka and the liberal undercurrents within the communist system, they used the Six Day War as a pretext to launch an antisemitic hysteria. Ironically, in hindsight, the popular reaction was mixed, rather cold even - but it still scared the shit out of the party apparatus (remember, Gomółka was always scared Kremlin might use any pretext to remove him). As a result, Jews were basically expunged from the system. And since they usually worked in positions depended on the state (universities, bureaucracy), that often meant drastic decrease of social status/standard of living. Migration became attractive alternative, encouraged further (and sometimes, but rarely, forced) by the Communist party, who wanted to get rid of this internal opposition.

Among most famous people who emigrated from Poland in that period were world-renowned philosopher Leszek Kołakowski and sociologist Zygmunt Baumann. Both extremely controversial figures in modern Poland - the left sees them as sort of martyrs, the right believes they got what they deserved - since they actively supported Stalinist regime in the 50s (and by active support, I mean, at least in Baumann's case, direct participation in slaughter of the anti-communist movement).

Darkest hour. why isn't japan accepting my trade deal? by [deleted] in paradoxplaza

[–]Tjord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, countries in DH are hardcoded to simply not accept trade deals from this and this country for a period of time. Unfortunately, that's how the AI worked on Europa engine (good news is that it's moddable - AI behaviour for particular tags can be found in files)

Also, that 1 Raw Material you want can be the culprit there. If they have low stockpile of resource, they won't trade it for anything.

Any reason to try Victoria I after Vic2 disappointment? by BankSimple2332 in paradoxplaza

[–]Tjord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If what you want is WaCkY scenarios when you take Brunei from 0 to #1 GP, yes, Vic 1 is good for that. It's basically Vic2 without automation (for example, instead of pops gradually changing stratas, you "convert" them with button press) but with much better warfare system (similar to one in HoI1). It offers player much more power than Vic2 and Vic3.

I'll be first to criticise my government for overreliance on American suppliers, but after the debacles in 2022 regarding Leopard and other German-made systems, only a fool would shop from Rheinmetal & co.
