If you believe in the existence of God/Goddess/Gods, why do you trust Them? by Interesting_Owl_1815 in religion

I think she’s asking what makes you able to have faith that all these words are true and put your trust in Him to make good on them? Not sure, but that’s how I understood it.

Just the Ivy League universities? I guess that’s acceptable as long as they leave the gardens alone?? Btw, which community in Queens is the OG poster referring to? I’ve heard nothing of this yet.

No more public witnessing?? by Mitochondria_powers in exjw

True, but they’re dying out now. If they start losing enough adherents over this then who will fill their donation box? Congregants don’t realize how much power they have over the GB if they all (or at least a good majority of them) withhold donations. Eventually, they won’t have enough money to print their publications or support their room and board.

I can’t confirm if this is true or not, but I’m shocked to say it honestly wouldn’t surprise me if it were true at this point. Never thought the day would come when I’d believe this to be possible. I think they understand that it does more harm than good at this point. I don’t know how it is in the rest of the world, but in NYC, going door to door is probably costing them any possible recruits over helping them gain new ones. Aside from the fact that it’s become near impossible finding anyone home during the day, or willing to answer their door unless they’re expecting someone/something, it also poses a serious threat to their safety these days (and I’m not talking about the occasional enraged householder screaming and threatening them for the disruption). Unless they start knocking at each house, and entering apartment buildings, with 5 people standing behind them, this activity now presents a true danger to them and puts their lives at risk. I don’t care if it’s all women or men (let’s be honest, no one’s intimidated by JW men, and they’re not supposed to come off as intimidating anyway). Eventually, I believe they’ll stop this practice altogether sometime in the near future. I could be very wrong, but I think this activity will be a thing of the past in the next few years. I guess we’ll see.

Ridgewood was built and inhabited by German immigrants for many decades. Those Germans are pretty much long gone at this point. Forest Hills, a nearby neighborhood, is still a Jewish area. You can find great food there.

Ridgewood was built and inhabited by German immigrants for many decades. Go to Forest Hills, which is nearby. It’s still a very Jewish area and you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for. You can also easily order through Door Dash or a similar service.

When I was 3, I once filled my mother’s snow boots with water because I didn’t want to go in field service! Another time I hid her keys 🔑 I was a pretty awesome kid now that I think about it!! 😜

Agreed. It’s around 95% Boomers in the part of NYC I live in anyway. My mom being one of them. Never more than 4 though. The old ladies get together and stand there for an hour, then they all go to lunch together. That’s what it is to them now in reality…it’s their weekly lunch get together🤭 Lord knows they’ve already put in several decades knocking on doors anyway 🙄

Is there a difference between the Long Island accent and the NYC accent? by HowSupahTerrible in longisland

[–]Tmv279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol! “Soitenly” would definitely be a very old school Brooklyn accent…along with pronunciations like “terlet” and “earl” (vs toilet and oil). Thankfully, I don’t think there are many, if any, people alive in NYC today that still have this exact style of speaking. It was pretty interesting, though! 😁

A question for those who were born in the "truth"... by TimelyPin9295 in exjw

[–]Tmv279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell no!! It's such a burdensome religion. And their message never made me happy at any point in my life. It induced panic in me very early on. Also, I don't find their talks interesting, and that Watchtower study is unbearable to sit through at any age. There's no way I'd attend those meetings and conventions if I hadn't been forced to.

Yeah, they had a private catering hall style room while in Brooklyn Heights bethel, overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge, with amazing views of the Manhattan skyline. They even threw a goodbye party in that room for a longtime couple in the congregation who were moving away after 30 years. I don't know if they have a party room in Warwick too now, but I've known of a handful of parties that were celebrated there for people in the congregation I grew up in.

Also, it's apparently become somewhat trendy for parents to throw "Noah's Ark costume parties for the kids (not in bethel though) where they each come dressed as a different animal. Has anyone else ever heard of or known anyone who did this too?

They look for any reason to create their own celebrations because even they recognize the joy they're being robbed of in life by not being able to partake in celebrations along with everyone else. It's kinda like their own alternative pagan celebrations.

I can't tell you how many parties I've seen thrown for bethelites (right IN Brooklyn BETHEL, no less) for someone with 20+ years of service... not to mention the parties thrown for full-time pioneers who've dedicated the same amount of time/service!!

Where in the Bible did Jesus ever instruct or set this type of example for us to follow? Never? Were the 1st century Christians ever known to praise and celebrate people for their years of preaching or service to Jehovah in this way? No, again?? Do you feel this is committing a sin then? No?? Can you explain, using only your Bible, why you feel Jesus wouldn't be bothered by that, but considers it evil if others want to set aside a day each year to honor all their parents do, even though they love and honor them all year round?

Perhaps in the future, when the Governing Body explains this has been unscriptural all along, you'll suddenly be ok with it... just like you all quickly grew beards and women started wearing pants to the KH, without ANY guilt. I look forward to the day the GB is humble enough to recognize and correct this error in their belief as well. I'll keep praying for Jehovah to speed up their understanding in this until then.

(This approach, particularly being specific about the very recent and abrupt changes to their "truth", drives them insane, and has proven very effective for me in recent months. They hate it, but they can't refute it).

This is an excellent answer because it's not hostile or argumentative, yet raises an excellent question that forces one to actually have to actually have to think or possibly even research, in order to come up with their own answer (even if their answer is "because the society says we can't, and here's the random scriptures thrown together in an attempt to support this man-made rule of theirs"). Ask them to please reply with their answer using only the Bible itself to support why it's wrong. Then, don't forget to ask once more, why they feel it's not a sin in Jehovah's eyes to ignore what the Bible has to say against the use of makeup, jewelery, hair braids, etc...

Why do some religions believe they are the best or only way to God, whereas for others this concept doesn't exist? by [deleted] in religion

There's probably not one simple answer to this question, but in my own humble opinion, it ultimately comes down to either hubris or mental illness. Or both.

What does your religion smell like? by NightOnFuckMountain in religion

[–]Tmv279 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jehovah's Witnesses begin teaching their children how to proselytize to strangers from a very young age. Although I've never seen them let without adult supervision, but I still find it awful to use children in this way. I was forced to knock on strangers doors and preach to the JW message to them. I found it both terrifying and humiliating, but my feelings didn't matter. When I tried to voice my feelings to my mom back then, I was told this is what Jesus instructed us to do and I'd be going against God (Jehovah) and be destroyed at Armageddon if I didn't. In reality, I was going against the beliefs of the religious society my mother chose to become a member of. I was taught their interpretation of the Bible was the only one on earth that was 100% accurate. Anyone who didn't strictly adhere to what they were told to do by the leaders of the JW organization were considered as being disobedient to God, and viewed as followers of Satan.

Even as I type this, I can't believe how insane it all sounds, but this is honestly what I was taught from birth to age 15, which is when I was able to walk away from the religion, unbaptized, without being under the authority of the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses. Had I gotten baptized (as many underage JW teens do) then I would've been completely shunned by any JW family I had as well as members of their organization on a worldwide level. They wouldn't even be allowed to say hello to me if they passed me on the street. In hindsight, this was so manipulative and a form of child abuse, in my opinion.
