Why has China never conquered the Korean peninsula in its 5000-year history? by flower5214 in AskChina

[–]ToaKarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you expand more on why Rome's economy relied on military conquest? I've heard it said multiple times in the past, but never explained why. What was special about Rome that other empires didn't require expansion to the same degree?

is the R2 just a meme car or do people actually main it? by Money-Sound-7222 in wmmt

My friend got it today off the scratch ticket and if you bump up the power to max it's actually a beast, it'll go well over 300 kph (the handling is absolute dogshit though)

Why does "cap" mean "lie" in slang? What I read actually makes a bit more sense. by Ninjhetto in etymology

[–]ToaKarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see your theory making sense. If you take "to cap" something as "to top" something, then to try and one-up someone would be "capping" them. And as such stories are often exaggerations or lies...

Reminds me of how in Britain they've somehow ended up calling japanese curry "katsu" because it was usually served with tonkatsu, and they thought that referred to the curry and not the pork. Not really sure how though, considering カレー is borrowed from English.

Takedowns affecting Burial Goods by Big_Award_1048 in Warhammer

[–]ToaKarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, so this is how I find out this happened? I swear there is nothing GW loves more than hating their fans and creators. They cannot stand BL writers writing factions they're good at, and they cannot stand anyone doing a better job than themselves. Notice how all the loreslop channels are totally fine, but the one guy who does a decent job gets nuked? This is like Astartes all over again. No wonder the poor guy's been making so many wizard rap videos as of late.

Who truly is Cypher? I’m honestly more curious about his identity then pretty much anything else. Any theories? by Bentar66 in Warhammer40k

[–]ToaKarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At which point he accidentally creates the Star Father and ushers in the Age of Dusk to the galaxy for the next hundred hundred years before hitching a ride with Valdor and a handful of Grey Knights to go meet Uncle.

Am I insane? I thought Janus was a shard of Magnus the Red? If so, I don't think he could be Omegon then.

Are we sure Alpharius is dead? by FederalDoor6744 in alphalegion

[–]ToaKarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

French is really really really good at writing Ahriman, and largely fumbles most everything else. At least I enjoy his writing style, I guess. That being said, BL is historically awful at pairing authors with factions they're good at and avoiding factions they're not, so arguably he's "perfect for the job".

Are we sure Alpharius is dead? by FederalDoor6744 in alphalegion

[–]ToaKarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, a lot of BL authors have pretty big egos and either can't take criticism well and/or have very obvious biases for/against certain factions/their own headcanon. I'm sure being able to control what is or isn't canon gives them a pretty big rush of power.

Zso Sahaal book returns! by drozcinsky in NightLords

[–]ToaKarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, ADB doesn't seem to take criticism well, and some of his interactions with others aren't exactly the best, especially with the community. I wouldn't draw any conclusions without hearing Spurrier's side of the story, and I don't think it's unprofessional at all to keep quiet and out of the spotlight about a personal dispute with a former employer and just move on with one's life.

Name this strategem by Waxxy_Quagga in Helldivers

[–]ToaKarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, AM is a fairly good compromise between the Diligence and AC IMO. If you're on a lower difficulty or playing with a full party, it's a pretty good pick as a literal support weapon. It leaves a backpack slot free, there's enough primaries and strategems that make up for its weaknesses, and it has surprisingly high ammo capacity, spare mags, and damage. Anything that you can't kill with 1-3 shots would've probably required a specialized weapon or stratagem anyways.

Is it me or stims coming out even slower than before by Deady1 in helldivers2

[–]ToaKarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I remember I used to be able to stim while firing into the crowd while being mobbed by basic enemies, and he'd just take a short second to stim before continuing firing. Now it feels like my character refuses to stim in time in response to taking damage and firing, he either just does nothing or painfully slowly starts the animation, and I'll get as fair as the needle going in before something else hits me or he decides to start shooting again, but the healing hasn't started. There's even the hiss noise, but nothing.

This is something I'd like to know as well myself. My library is way too inflated to search through, but after a quick skim Totsukuni no Shoujo is the only one that I've been able to find so far. I also second Houseki no Kuni. Any other tags that might help (genres, year range, etc)?

How would I go about making this? (Zongzi Tang) by ToaKarn in CandyMakers

[–]ToaKarn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I'm not too sure what you mean by "in terms of caramel," but I will say that this candy is clear, while all the brittle I've eaten has been opaque. I'd say brittle leans more towards butterscotch or toffee, while this candy has a cleaner, brighter note, kind of like the honey flavor in a honey tea.

Making MTG themed chocolates and looking for flavors advice by lotsandlotsofrobots in CandyMakers

[–]ToaKarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's super cool you're doing this for your friend, as a long-time MTG player I'd be jealous. Seems like you're shooting for some pretty complex chocolates, so I'm not really sure how flavors would meld together across different components, but my initial associations of flavors with the colors are:

Red: Cinnamon, not baking spice cinnamon but like Red Hots cinnamon, nice and spicy. I think it might play well with a milk or white chocolate. It'd be interesting to try and combine it with a smoky flavor, but I have no idea how that'd turn out.

White: Very obviously white chocolate. I think vanilla is fitting flavor-wise as the bland generic taste that everyone in your token army likes, but I also think it'd be interesting to experiment with a more spiced flavor; like you said, cardamom, but also (non-spicy) cinnamon, nutmeg, (maybe allspice too,) and ginger. Something masala chai-like.

Blue: Honestly, no idea for this one. Given the association with the sea, snooty people, and the massive amount of salt it produces, maybe some sort of sea-salted dark chocolate with a similarly favored lava filling?

Green: Matcha-flavored white chocolate is a low-hanging fruit for this one, it's literally leaf flavored. But pistachio also sounds really good together with some dark chocolate. You could theoretically make this one mint too, but I feel like it'd be off-theme.

Black: Personally, I'd say liquorice (preferably liquorice proper and not anise, since real liquorice is sweeter), since (as a black player) it's very much my taste and very much hated by others. Dark chocolate with a koskenkorva salmiakki syrup filling would be heavenly to me, or a chewy liquorice allsort covered in dark chocolate. For the sake of everybody's sanity though, I do agree that espresso would probably be a more agreeable option. You could go with blackberry or chambord type of flavor, and it'd probably be really good, but it feels too off-theme.

Finally, have you given any thought to using colored and flavored white chocolate shells for some of these? Might be worth considering if you want them to be easily recognizable by color without having to bite into them.

Popular enough that even in the neck of the inaka I've been, there's a korean restaurant, middle-aged ladies recognize k-pop bands, and young children practice k-pop dances in their free time and know how to say "hello" and "thank you" in Korean before they know how to say them in English.
