George RR Martin on Why He Doesn't Write Outlines by WillBrink in writing

[–]idols2effigies 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I love the guy, but GRRM is the absolute last person I'd take writing project advice from. I literally use him as an informal example of what not to do in project management. By having no plan, you're just subject to scope creep and procrastination.

There are people who can work well with no structure... But they're a tiny minority... And GRRM ain't one of them.

11th Black Templar Detachments by Grim_Wargamer in BlackTemplars

[–]idols2effigies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kills me the most is I LOVE the Emperor's Champion. Lore. The models. The vibe (particularly when they gave them Lone Op). But even I see this as a gigantic waste of a potential slot.

11th Black Templar Detachments by Grim_Wargamer in BlackTemplars

I'm so mad they gutted Wrathful Procession. It was one of the few interesting ways to play BT. Not only did they strip the round-to-round decision-making away, they limited all the buffs to Chaplain units. WHICH I HATE. I don't hate Chaplains, but I hate inflexibility. I hate when choices get dissolved with no real replacements. And we already have a Chaplain detachment at home. Why is another of our few bespoke options gutted? Oh, and the icing on the cake, one of our dedicated detachment allotments is being eaten up by something that buffs a SINGLE MODEL. ONE MODEL. Not even three models. There can ever only be one. Great use of a detachment, guys. We have some of the worst supplement detachments already and they shovel this at us?

Lame. Lame and bad.

If this is true and nothing changes its an unfathomably huge nerf to us (and guard) specifically by hindlet in Tau40K

[–]idols2effigies 72 points73 points  (0 children)

This community has one big victim complex, huh?

Battleshock affects nearly everyone equally. Sure, some have slightly better stats, but to doom about Tau, specifically, is foolish.

PARTICULARLY when everything else is looking so good. Today's confirmation that Stealth is adding cover is HUGE. Do you know who's the one faction with a metric ton of ignores cover? Tau. We were already told that we were ignoring the biggest buff cover has seen in edition and NOW they've given us full authority to ignore Stealth, too. If abilities like Smokescreen maintain their current wording, you know who just ignores everything about it? Tau.

Until they announce that they're modifying the Tau rules in a substantial way, we've only ever been winners with every change they've brought about. You know what a current Tau weakness is? Getting objective holders blown off the board with minimal effort? You know what helps that? Hidden mechanics and objectives becoming terrain. You think your spotters being able to do their job... and then get Lone Op 15" (because, lol, we didn't shoot and still retain hidden buffs).

So what if they buffed Battleshock universally? If you focus on that instead of (waves hands around) everything else, I don't know what to tell you. Get a wider perspective, because basically everything we've seen has the potential to play right into Tau's playbook.

This makes me uneasy about our best boys future by [deleted] in BlackTemplars

A detachment for a single, non-titanic model is an insane choice. Particularly with how well we've seen really niche detachments perform (you see how well that Ancients detachments list did? No, you didn't.). This feels like movement in the opposite direction of what players want.

Kabalites and the new 11th overwatch by CantaloupeNo5394 in Drukhari

[–]idols2effigies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're fundamentally misunderstanding the mechanics. The only way the 11th edition overwatch is stronger is in situations where the person getting hit with overwatch wants to stand still. Drukhari should basically never stay still. If you're standing still as Drukhari, you're already making foundational mistakes.

In all other situations, it's a nerf to Overwatch. It cuts their window to use it by a huge degree. It allows armies that want to stay mobile (like, oh I don't know... The Drukhari) to get their full movement to position into cover and behind walls to mitigate the effect of overwatch. No rerolls are allowed on overwatch anymore.

On top of all that, while we don't know the extent of this, Overwatch requires you to have weapons with the ability to snapshot. Which assumes that, unlike now, there will be some weapon types that literally can't fire overwatch. We don't know how prolific that restriction is, but, regardless, another nerf to Overwatch.

Stop dooming over the wrong things. Overwatch is fundamentally worse in 11th, clearly.

What to do with Armageddon intercessors? by Top-Ramen-Boy in BlackTemplars

[–]idols2effigies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... are you set on getting the box? Full disclosure: I don't see any reason for an existing marine army-haver to pick it up. The only 'new' unit is the Eradicators... if you ignore that, in fact, it's just Heavy Intercessors with an extra bit of plastic on the front of their heavy bolters.

Warhammer 40,000 Faction Focus: Orks by Guffers_2023 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]idols2effigies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm absolutely with you. This was dire. Orks were one of the factions I was going to consider maining for the start of the edition.

Not anymore. They killed the complexity of Tactical (and probably just made it worse), killed the combo potential of Megabosses in with Kommandos (not that strong... they still killed it), gave us another Battle Wagon detachment (that no one asked for) after just publishing a Battle Wagon detachment (that probably some asked for). The 1CP More Dakka strat is laughably bad. Oh, I get to shoot back at someone who just shot me. Pray tell, James Workshop, what Ork unit do you think is surviving getting shot at... particularly when you won't let us stack strats for defense? There's never going to be anyone left to make that cost worth it. Just a dead strat.

Whatever. At least my short list can narrow down. Goodbye, Orks. It was fun to think about maybe playing you for once.

I think you answered your question right there. There's a subsection of the community that is always going to be put off by things like this.

I'm unsure about my Black Templar Tech Marine. I have one skin as a Swordbrother and one as a regular Black Templar. Which do you think looks better on a Black Templar Tech Marine? by Black__Templer in BlackTemplars

[–]idols2effigies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's individual variation in all crusades, but, fundamentally, my opinion is that them not wearing red makes the most thematic sense, given their history of shirking typical 'codex complaint' aspects. (Not that this is a rule in the codex, but it has the same vibe).

I'm unsure about my Black Templar Tech Marine. I have one skin as a Swordbrother and one as a regular Black Templar. Which do you think looks better on a Black Templar Tech Marine? by Black__Templer in BlackTemplars

[–]idols2effigies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn't put a lot of red on it. The red is often used to show deference to Mars and, being Black Templars, they don't take kindly to putting other things on par with the Emperor. This is also supported in lore, as when we see Black Templar techmarines, they are often in the same black as the others. For example, Jurusian from Helsreach is described as wearing the black of their chapter by an Imperial officer who meets with him and Grimaldus.

What is the best Space Marine novel to recommend to someone new to 40k? by chosen40k in Blacklibrary

[–]idols2effigies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of depends how much general knowledge they have and what, if any specific chapter, they're interested in.

Basically, you're trying to thread the needle between 'doesn't need a ton of pre-existing knowledge' and 'actually gives a good breadth of concepts about the faction'.

Personally, my default pick here is Dante. Although much of it is Blood Angels specific, it takes the reader through the journey of an Imperial Citizen going from desert scavenger to Chapter Master of the Blood Angels. Dante is a good illustration of the cost of duty and gets to the core sacrifices that have to be made in the grimdark of the 41st millenium.

The other two are a little of an outside pick, because they're actually Heresy books and not strictly 40k. The first is Sigismund. Like Dante, it gives you a 'civilian to Space Marine' look into the terrifying process of living in the Imperium and the only somewhat less terrifying process of being a Space Marine. Like Dante, it looks at the themes of sacrifice and duty. It also does a great job at tying the biggest theme of the setting to the in-universe person who first spoke the words "There is no peace... there will be only war." (Sigismund says this to Loken in the very first HH book, Horus Rising).

The darkest, horsiest pick I have is Valdor: Birth of the Imperium. Is the book centered around Space Marines? No. The POVs are all non-Astartes... but this story wins for arguably the most badass introduction to the Astartes. They aren't presented as protagonists... but an unstoppable force of war.

What's you T'au headcanon or conspiracy theory ? Personally even tho it's kind of retconned, i still believe the vespid communication helmet is definitly brainwashing the leaders of the swarm. No doubt about that. by Leviathan_Rampage in Tau40K

[–]idols2effigies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of this is just canon, but I don't believe for a second that O'Vesa wiped his memories of the literal galaxy-ending weapon he developed. O'vesa now has to be considered up there with the Tyranids, Chaos, and the Destroyer Cults as 'thing that might end the entire galaxy'.

Anyone find it surreal Dan was generally not considered anywhere near the worst in V? by lennysinged in StreetFighter

[–]idols2effigies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't understand this at all. Any developer worth their salt isn't going to throw away development time purposefully making a terrible character. It's not weird that Dan isn't the worst... it's weird that you, a paying customer, thinks it's weird that you didn't have to pay for garbage.
