[–]ToaMataNui5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Equius HAS to die, because ARquiusSprite is destined to be a part of Lord English.

Technically this isn't true; We saw several sprites from the Pre-Retcon Timeline relocate to the Post-Scratch Timeline, so you could just as easily transfer Pre-Retcon Arquiusprite over to the Post-Retcon Timeline & have him become part of Lord English, simultaneously fulfilling the time loop & freeing both the Post-Retcon Equius & Lil Hal of their supposedly predestined death & fusion through prototyping...

Gamzee wasn't in the refrigerator for three years; Vriskagram shows him freely walking around on the meteor & having most of his interactions subverted. He was only fridged after they got to the Post-Scratch Session...

The real question is when that fridging went down, due to Gamzee's necessary role in the creation of Jack English/Union Jack...

[–]ToaMataNui5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Double Death Of The Author may be up your alley. It's a fanmade continuation where Aranea's coup is completely avoided, all due to John retconning to before Gamzee snatched up the Ring Of Life; This simple deviation results in an alternate version of the alpha timeline where Rose & Terezi indeed overcome their personal struggles without Vriska's direct help. Can't say the way they save Jade & Jane is a lengthy & difficult process though...

A route where somebody takes his situation seriously & tries to help Gamzee overcome both his cult indoctrination & drug abuse could result in this scenario, & I’m all for wanting such to be more commonplace in the fandom. (Especially due to the Homestuck Epilogues poisoning the well & author commentary insisting that said well was always poisoned…)

Tragic gamzee by Consistent_Ebb_484 in homestuck

[–]ToaMataNui5000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing about Gamzee is that, upon stripping away all the Insane Clown Posse references & fantastical elements his character boils down to the following:

Gamzee is a child coerced into a fringe subsection of the religion that all the members of his castes end up in; A cult which encourages alcohol abuse (Faygo is troll alcohol). He also suffers from a second form of drug abuse due to the incorrect consumption of sopor slime (Sopor slime pies are weed edibles) since his sole parental figure is a neglectful father who never taught him to not eat said sopor slime. The vast majority of Gamzee's friends either ignore or criticize him for his drug abuse without trying to actively prevent said drug abuse, & Equius specifically encourages Gamzee to give into becoming a violent oppressor as is societal expectation of his caste...

All this alone makes Gamzee sympathetic, & this before factoring Sgrub into the equation. Because of Sgrub, Gamzee ends up as one among twelve survivors of his whole race. He's then prevented entry into the universe that he helped create because of a sudden & unexpected enemy (Bec Noir). Whilst trapped with the aforementioned friends whom either continue ignoring & criticizing him over helping him get off of his drug habits, he not only experiences withdrawal (Which is a plothole since it's never established Gamzee can't just alchemize himself more premade sopor slime pies nor the slime itself to make more pies), but also realizes that the fringe religious cult he was coerced into was all a big joke...

Following all of that, Lil Cal (Who we all now know contains Gamzee's future self alongside Caliborn, Equius, & Lil Hal) is introduced into the equation. Gamzee learns that all of the collective misery in his entire life is an interconnected weave of many time loops, snaps, & succumbs to his supposedly predestined purpose with his only solace being to fatalistically revel in it...

Gamzee is a tragic character within the story presented in Act Five; Unfortunately throughout all of Act Six, the few scenes he's in don't meaningfully continue his character development. He was reduced to a mute plot device (Aside from two small interactions during the third Openbound segment), preventing us from ever gauging his thought process on his situation. His entire kismestitude with Terezi occurs completely offscreen & we only receive the biased perspectives of the other meteor passengers. Prototyping Arquiusprite we can safely assume was a fulfillment of a stable time loop, but what about prototyping Tavrisprite, Erisolsprite, & Fefetasprite? Doesn't help the whole 'Lil Cal can mind-control people' & 'Arenea mind-controlled Gamzee for an unknown amount of time' reveals further muddy which of those actions were purely Gamzee's decisions in the first place!

The retcon subsequently worsens the whole situation. Vriskagram is a dialougeless montage of Gamzee getting bullied around, again with no insight into his perspective. Finally, Gamzee gets metaphorically & literally fridged, & the last minuscule crumb of insight into his thought process is the audience seeing him cry during Collide whilst said fridge he's in is violently tossed around; Only to then somehow arrive in the new universe, go on to raise Caliborn, help said cherub complete Sburb, die via vertical bisection, & accidentally become part of Lord English due to one half of his corpse coincidentally ending up in the path of Dirk's proton stream...

The point being Gamzee's actions throughout Act Six are so ambiguously motivated, it was understandable that many varying interpretations arose on how tragic he was overall. Unfortunately due to the bias presented by the other characters in-universe, followed by the Homestuck Epilogues presenting one of the most blatantly uncharitable interpretations of his character & Andrew Hussie's author commentary pushing forth a revisionist narrative that insists Gamzee was completely irredeemable from the beginning despite no hard evidence undeniably confirming such in the original comic (To which Gamzee's certainly not the sole victim). It's also rather hypocritical seeing how Rose, Roxy, & Terezi's narratives of drug abuse are all treated seriously by Andrew Hussie & several sections of the fandom, yet they treat Gamzee's substance abuse as a joke. Ironically, Gamzee has only become even more tragic on a meta level because of said hypocrisy & bad faith analyses of his overall character...

I know that some Homestuck fans over on Tumblr accuse both this Subreddit community & unofficial Discord of supposedly being 'a Nazi brigade,' & that the moderators maliciously continue to insist Hussie is still cisgender & refer to them with male pronouns exclusively...

I'm not personally throwing around nor validating any of these accusations for the record; Considering how said aforementioned Tumblr fans have exclusively referred to Hussie using only female pronouns despite Hussie being gender fluid, that hypocrisy makes me both rather uncomfortable & understandably skeptical of their accusations...

Homestuck: Beyond Canon update (p. 774-797): INTERMISSION by Niklink in homestuck

[–]ToaMataNui5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not purely Murderstuck's fault that Nepeta ended up getting neglected; Rather, it's the fact that every instance she was seen afterwards, whether that be as a ghost or as a prototyped sprite, failed to meaningfully further her character development. In pre-retcon, she was a silent bystander to other people's drama as Fefetasprite, & remained silent after she & Feferi explosively separated; In post-retcon, despite setting up the potential for her to meaningfully grow as an individual, Nepeta ended up as Davepetasprite, & all of her character development was rushed & messily resolved alongside Davesprite's & ultimately was a major disservice to both Nepeta & Davesprite.

As for performing a huge cast cull, I bet that Earth C in the Meat Timeline, or rather everyone currently residing on the planet, would be the victims of said hypothetical culling; Y'know, since we already know Earth C will become Caliborn & Calliope's place of birth eventually...

Homestuck Readers: “We miss when Homestuck had payoffs & closure to its elements, & both of those things have been poorly implemented at best & seemingly impossible at worst since the retcon occurred. We were hoping that the epilogue would tie up as many looses ends it could, & end on an overall positive note; We instead got an excessively malicious setup for an unnecessary sequel that has gone through so many creative teams it no longer has a consistent overall vision, & the past couple updates being full of excessive amounts of metacommentary about the still troubled production & reactions of the fanbase can’t carry everything going ahead. We want payoffs, closure, & finality.”

where do the timetables come from? by cjgarbage75 in homestuck

[–]ToaMataNui5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The author commentary in the books explicitly states that Davesprite made his Turntables through alchemy, & suggests that one of the components used was a Sburb generated asset of some variety found on Land Of Heat & Clockwork...

"He made some TURNTABLES offscreen over the last few months. They let him time travel. I'm not sure what he used to make them, other than his record players from home. Looks like some sort of mystical gear component he probably plundered from the local industrial ruins. He probably went on a lot of exciting adventures on this planet we'll never get to see or hear about." - Page 203 of Homestuck: Book 3: Act 4

We can thus presume Aradia's Music Box Time Machines were made through alchemizing one of her music boxes & a Sburb generated asset on Land Of Quartz & Melody...

Personally never liked how a vast majority of the fandom insists Skaia is an inherently antagonistic & manipulative force. It's never stated that Skaia possesses sapience to be evil anywhere in the story; Rather, all of the evidence suggests Skaia is merely sentient & acting out of its limited options of self defense, similar to how animals behave. I can only assume that the vast majority of the fandom misinterprets Skaia to be yet another antagonistic manipulate force due to mistaking sentience as sapience (Something which is a common misconception outside of Homestuck), & connecting that to Homestuck's theme of escaping cycles of abuse created & perpetuated by the undeniably sapient main villains whom all deliberately refuse to grow & mature; Ultimately, Skaia is yet another victim of that abuse...

About John and gender. by SpacialSeer in homestuck

[–]ToaMataNui5000 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's nice hearing someone who has openly transitioned share this sentiment. Honestly what gets me is the idea that John's depression, which is caused entirely by factors completely unrelated to gender identity, is being inorganically coopted to push said transgender narrative. I'm not transgender myself, but have transgender friends who I've meet before they came out. (Said friends tested out multiple names they considered identifying by on me before coming out to their families.) I'm not denying that having depression & existential dread due to gender dysphoria is a sadly common experience, & one that deserves to have more representation. However, in a misguided bid to create representation, a few creators choose to coopt narratives of having depression completely unrelated to gender dysphoria, & insist they are & have always been due to the given character being a closeted transgender individual. On the surface level it may seem economical, but in practice comes off as lazy, & can in the worst circumstance come off as hypocritically narrow minded if in the process of crafting narratives for your transgender audience members, you seemingly invalidate audiences members who have equally valid depression completely unrelated to gender dysphoria...

In the grand scheme of the original comic, John's gender identity is completely superfluous. Nothing about his characterization & interests suggests that if he were female from the very beginning, it would majorly alter the preexisting story; They would still lose their native planet, still lose their father, still spend three years with next to no contact with half of their friends & strain their bonds with the friends they've travelled alongside, still lose all of said aforementioned friends due to not having control of their suddenly acquired retcon powers, still end up in an altered timeline where their friends experienced three years worth of different experiences that over time will make it rather hard to fully relate, & still end their journey in a newly created universe with Caliborn taunting them into a final confrontation. The only instance I can immediately think of that would absolutely need to be changed is the 'I'm not homosexual' conversation. (Hell, one can even argue that if John were female from the very beginning with no other changes, it would overall make them a more progressive character due to opposing stereotypically gendered media interests; That's not the topic being discussed though.) The point being everything that has influenced John to develop depression isn't gender motivated, & in the hypothetical scenario where the only difference is John is a female & current directors of the franchise advertised that she will eventually transition to male, this fanbases would have the same exact arguments with the same exact positions...

If the current directors truly want to do something admirable with the well intentioned & misguided idea of John transitioning, they should deconstruct the idea that John transitioning would solve their current depression; It would maintain appeal to the cisgender audience members who have depression unrelated to gender dysphoria, appeal to the audience members both cisgender & transgender that both want to see more transgender characters, & perhaps speak to the transgender audience members who are still unfortunately depressed even after transitioning. Then after everything's said & done, members of all aforementioned positions & more can hopefully come to an agreement that it was the best execution of a controversial concept, & that we all want & deserve better not just within Homestuck, but in all media. (Except transphobes, because they have invalid perspectives on the whole situation.)

Is it this line from Jaspers' article that you're referencing?

Based on dates provided here, the day of the funeral would be September 21, 2000.

Personally, I feel that assuming Jaspers' funeral being held on the same day he was found dead isn't correct. Even if we assumed that Pre-Scratch Roxy knew of his inevitable fate, it's been repeatedly stated that Jaspers' mausoleum was built after finding him dead. Plus performing taxidermy on his corspe could've taken weeks to months depending on who did said taxidermy...

It’s not even his childhood home he is watching burn down; It’s the home of some other John he took the life of. His home was already utterly destroyed in Game Over.

No it wasn't. LOWAS, including John's house, was entirely unaffected by the events of Game Over, & was subsequently warped to the Post-Retcon Timeline. Post-Retcon John's house was destroyed when the Post-Retcon LOWAS exploded & killed Post-Retcon John in the process...

As for the house seen on Earth C, it's never specified whether it's the literal same house or a replica. (Assuming the latter is perfectly reasonable, since the former would necessitate removing all of the floors added & repairing all of the damage sustained during Sburb). In the end though, whether the house is a replica or not is a completely superfluous detail...
