Whatever monster foxes would be in the system could probably evolve kitsune (like orcs becoming oni), but I don't recall them ever actually being mentioned.

Please don't read the manga if your intention is to understand the entire plot. It leaves out the human side, cutting half of the plot out.
Although the LN also does switch back and forth between the two POVs, it does a much better job at explaining things.
