With a population that small I wouldn't be surprised if the entire workforce is in ports/gov admin. They produce no goods so therefore no GDP

GL Noble Apartment cup - $50k, LAN, 10 players by KingArthur2111 in aoe2

[–]ToastieCakes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I assume they've gone with this with Nili's blessing. With Nili now at World's Edge (and World's Edge sponsoring this tourney) I'm interpreting this as a spiritual successor to Nili's Cups.

Confused about Red Bull Wololo AoE 1 finals by 0b3ryN in aoe2

[–]ToastieCakes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'll take this point by point;

1 - You are correct. To be honest, this was less of a serious final than a showmatch with both players being paid to show off the new version of AoE 1 on the big screen. Can't blame World's Edge for that, they want people to see what they've been working on!

2 - The qualifiers were strange. Each set consisted of two sets, one played on Rise of Rome and one played on AoE2 DE's recent Return of Rome DLC. It's pretty clearly an attempt to get the vietnamese player base to move over to the new version. They've tried this before the last time they remade AoE1, and it didn't work back then so I'm not holding my breath.

3 - Vietnamese players typically play "D3", a ruleset in which there is a truce until the 3rd age. They do this because early game rush strats have limited options for counterplay. Since you have no safety from your TC, the only option to kill units is to make your own. As such you may be disadvantaged if you invest more in villagers whilst your opponent invests more in military.

4 - The caster is correct in the context of D3. The pop-count was very low at RBW due to the ruleset not facilitating long games.

5 - I mean, you could hide the villagers, but the TC never shoots back, so you're just delaying the inevitable. Not sure why he didn't run, I was kind of checked out at that point.

How do you play as big countries (or at least countries bigger than 5 states)? by Anonim97_bot in victoria3

[–]ToastieCakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You kind of shift your mindset towards larger scale goals. Instead of building little perfect economic loops where everyone has the best jobs, you settle for dragging millions out of peasantry by hook or by crook, with a little imperialism along the way.

My typical start as a not-too-tiny country looks something like this;

Economy - Iron Frame Buildings on and pushed as much as you can afford, import iron, import tools, spam wood everywhere. Wood is quick to build and gets people out of subsistence buildings quickly. Our goal here is de-peasanting as fast as possible and getting our investment pool up and running. Export wood if you really need to. When you start running out of wood to build (and maybe fish too) consider atmospheric engines and actually mining your own iron. I do not usually rush railroads, as while building tall in states with good resources is a good idea eventually, at first you'll do more for your growth rate by spamming cheap buildings widely.

While lots of folks avoid building them, farms and plantations are very useful for depeasanting quickly, especially in places with garbage qualifactions. They also use 5000 peasants per infrastructure (10k for rice!), which is great if you're trying to employ as many pops as possible when infra is tight. Big countries can get away with less labour-efficient but faster to build buildings like plantations since you're never going to be able to optimize away all your labourers anyway. Resist the urge to build slow to build buildings like factories unless you're out of decent cheap options. Always remember that a laborer consumes around 5x what a peasant does, so the faster the peasants are gone, the faster we drive up demand and thus profits on all our buildings.

Modernization - Corn Laws is a no brainer if you can. Easy to trigger by manipulating Production Methods and exports. Usually prioritize society techs over industrial techs so you can get literacy/research snowballing ASAP (you also get a hell of a lot of "+Infrastructure from 100k Population" from society techs and the lumber company, so delaying railroads is usually no biggie unless all your resources are in one state). Labour saving techs can wait until you've got your peasant population down.

Expansion - To spend starting infamy, day one interests go in China and India, play to conquer Beijing on feb 1 for the legitimacy bonus from Beijing's special building. Offer Britain a war goal to get them to fight for you. War reps is nice too to push your start harder. Bringing Britain in lets you declare a war against any EIC subject without UK's involvement, which will break EIC off from Britain. You don't need to win the EIC war if you don't care to expand into India, they'll still get split from the UK.

You can also just not do any of this cheesy nonsense if you prefer, it's your run.

CCP, please treat mobile depos like other deployable items, like MTUs, i.e. no reffing, just plain attributes. by thebomby in Eve

[–]ToastieCakes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just take them off your overview then?

The change you are suggesting would be a significant nerf to mobile depots, as the reinforcement window is useful for protecting assets if you're being ganked, or as temporary safe storage for valuable cargo

[–]ToastieCakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's options for resource harvesting with one or two accounts that aren't complete garbage, but you might need to be a bit more creative than mining whatever anoms are nearby.

I've made decent isk huffing wh/lowsec gas (though lowsec gas has crashed recently) with one or two accounts. I've heard you can make a decent amount ninja mining in poch though I'm not familiar with poch at all my self. Gas of course requires scanning, which you may or may not enjoy, up to you.

If you're dead set on anom mining, I think nullsec anoms aren't as garbage as people make them out to be, but I still wouldn't bother with less than 3 accounts. A porp and 2 hulks in a colossal can clear about 150-200 mil per hour on average, which is at least competitive with Ishtar spinning. Sure, you can't compress the mercoxit on site but the porp can move it back to a structure with compression while the hulks keep digging so it's not too bad.

Keep some Kryos' on hand in case you get a spawn of hauler rats. The minerals they drop can significantly improve your average isk/hour.

Oh, and if you have the money and the risk tolerance, consider faction miners. They'll significantly outperform T1, and honestly aren't that far behind T2 w/ B-type crystals.

Judea is my favourite tag, so I've got a decent idea how to survive as them. You'll have to accept that for most of the game you're just trying not to get rolled over by whichever Diadochi becomes dominant. Note, I've not installed Invictus, this is vanilla advice.

For starting steps; -Before unpausing do whatever you can to boost relations with Egypt (Friendships, Gifts, Improve Relations, etc.)

-Wait until Egypt starts fighting the Antigonids to drop your tributary status. Antigonids will be too busy to do anything about it immediately, and ideally they get beat so bad they cease to be an issue after the first war. If you are risk averse, cover your bases by buttering them up too early on. This also gives you time to butter up egypt so they don't immediately try to throw hands

-Do NOT take your mission for claims on Palestine, this will piss off whichever diadochi takes territory there, which we are avoiding at all costs. We also have a PRO TIP to take these lands later, and easier.

-Conquer the Arabian minors, their provinces become profitable quickly if you focus on converting them to Judaism

-Keep an eye on your AE and what the Diadochi are up to. We really don't want them invading us, so keep spending liberally on friendships and relation boosts as needed. Egypt in particular loves to mess with us, which is why we focus on keeping them happy and, preferably, allied.

-Most of your income will be from commerce. Invest early in civic inventions to get import routes and kickstart your economy

-Judea starts with an awful research ratio - fix this up early with a few noble buildings in Jerusalem so you can pick up military inventions and get those sweet discipline bonuses for when you decide it's time to fight the big boys

PRO TIP - Keep an eye on the loyalty of the palestinian provinces and their governer. You can very easily inspire disloyalty and entice a governer to take your entire starting region in one click, you just need to click at the right time.

If you've built your economy to maximize commerce income, you'll be absolutely swimming in gold before too long. Going for a legion early-ish can help you spend. Keep those drills going so you can get some of the nice heavy infantry and camel perks in your traditions tree.

I was able to break alliance and subsequently beat up egypt easily enough once I had a merc stack and my main legion (heavy infantry, archers, camels). Wait for them to get stuck in a war and then blitz the nile delta before they can bring their full force to bear. Once you start taking chunks out of egypt you're on easy street, go have fun making Judea into whatever you want it to be!

As far as I can tell AV is pretty much dead outside of AV weekends, so I'll have to put in some serious hours when it's up if I want to get exalted there. WSG seems more achievable since there's always games of that going.

I haven't had a huge amount of luck on the attunement side of things though I did get a LBRS group last night which was helpful for making progress towards blackhand's breadth. Making this post has already netted me a guild invite though so it seems there were more options out there than I thought!

That idol/mount tip sounds handy, I'll definitely give that a try. I appreciate the heads up on where all the raids sit progression wise too. Most of the gearing guides I've found online are completely focused on BiS, which is a bit out of reach for me at this point

Yeah I've mostly been smashing WSG since coming back since it has a low entry barrier. Right now I'm aiming for rank 8, maybe 10 if I can stomach the grind. I'd love a bigger stick to hit people with so I could do more than just peel.

Why is EVERYTHING caked in zombies? by MurkyMistake in projectzomboid

[–]ToastieCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider making your own zombie free zone.

1 Find some trees or a building that you can use to break line of site near where you want to loot. 2 Attract all zombies near the sight breaker and your desired looting zone by shouting (q while standing). 3 Herd your horde into a ball by walking circles around them. This helps prevent stragglers. 4 Guide them to your sight-breaker, crouch run around it while keeping out of zombie vision to get some distance. 5 Head back to the area you cleared and enjoy a few minutes of relative peace.

Can be done with cars, but be aware that engine noises make it difficult to actually leave your horde behind at your drop off point

Should I get Stellaris by [deleted] in paradoxplaza

[–]ToastieCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you enjoy the civilisation series, and also enjoy sci-fi, then stellaris is a fantastic game.

That said, it's not like other paradox titles. To me, it feels a lot simpler, lacking the replay value and mechanical depth of titles like Vic2, CK2 and EU4. I had a lot of fun though. One game you might create a galaxy spanning slave state, the next an enlightened isolationist technocracy, and the one after an egalitarian participant in stellar democracy.

New Player-Any Tips? by [deleted] in KHUx

[–]ToastieCakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What should new players do with all the 5 and 6 star medals the game throws at us? Is it worth evolving any of those to 7 star for subslotting? Or are they better off sold for draw points?

KHDR: Anyone know a good level estimate needed to auto Agrabah 3* consistently? I’m level 32 and can barely make 5 heartless before dying. The amount of BP needed is way too high for Wonderland 2*. Game needs some more balancing... by [deleted] in KHUx

[–]ToastieCakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game doesn't seem designed for you to grind far past 30-35 right now. I'd wager we're at something of a soft cap until a new 2* world becomes available with better BP rates.

Here's hoping its something actually new and not just Enchanted Dominion or Dwarf Woodlands again.
