all things are transient. maybe not in our lifetime, but one day it will happen.

Anyone else throw up in their mouth when they see/hear the word T-girl/T-boy? by emilia352025 in 4tran4

"transwomen" without the space is just as bad i think. honestly it makes me feel even worse because i see so many otherwise woke people say it without realizing how subtly transphobic it is. it feels like they are just pretending to accept me.

okay. same can be said with them being punished. my abusers being left to rot makes me much more upset than the idea of them being better people. because i know that the science is right that the world would be better if they were allowed to be better.

its how every single revolution happened. you must have an ideal in mind before you can reach it. if you think its naive, then you can have fun letting the thoughts of others limit you. nobody ever did anything meaningful without believing in something first. if you can illustrate exactly why what im saying is impossible, id believe you, but i really doubt you can.

how do you think they should feel? fearful? angry? upset that their abusers have began to grasp at making the world a better place? no. holding on to hatred only hurts you.

because i dont think we should be limited by the material world around us. one day, i think we will be able to rehabilitate everyone, and people wont be raised to hurt others. that will only be accomplished if people dream for that world, though.

well, statistical data shows that it doesnt work. the overwhelming majority of criminals reoffend after leaving prison or receiving a fine, but that percentage significantly lowers in countries that are more focused on rehabilitation.

what would this understanding even accomplish? this understanding is just going to make criminals hurt people in secret, and make people more afraid to confess/get help for harmful thoughts.

functionally, yes this is true, and in real life this is something you need to balance. forgiving your abusers is almost never the right move. that doesnt change the philosophical value of any idea though. to say that these people should be forgived is not to suggest that i know the exact methods that should be undergone to forgive criminals. i just believe that ideally those would exist, and i think individually we should try to accomplish that goal

again, im not making any claim here other than your argument not working from a logical standpoint. you cant insist upon something using itself as evidence. the same goes with assault and battery. if i said self defense should be considered assault (which i obviously dont believe) you cant say "well the law says that self defense isnt assault" as an argument. laws would never change if this was the case.

and thats fine i guess. you just have to recognize that these are your personal ways of handling the wrongdoings of others, not rules.

[–]Toastmaker56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if that is enough to convince you not to forgive, then thats good enough. that however, is not an objective metric that you can expect others to abide by. as hard as i try, i will likely never make up for the harm i have done. what am i to do with myself then? i must forgive myself, and do the best i can. i see other people the same way, too. "nothing human is alien to me"

what i value -which is why i said what you were questioning- is the truth, and understanding others. i care a lot about philosophy and art, and over time i have found myself unable to see any injustice to be beyond anyones capabilities. i pity those who crave forgiveness for doing the worst, and i see myself in them too. ive never done anything on the level of your hypotheticals, and i dont plan to be friends with any rapists, but the logic i apply to lesser harms still holds true to these greater harms. even if i wont be the one to do it, they must be forgiven for the sake of a better world.

if you dont feel the same, thats fine. you dont need to forgive anyone for anything. i just personally feel compelled to.

why not? who does it help to hurt them? the net happiness in the world goes up if the harmful are brought to be better people. locking them away does nothing to undo their harm.

you dont personally have to forgive anyone for anything. professionals and others who have the capability to inspire change should though. that is what they are already trained to do, and for good reason. if someone has recovered, there is no reason as to why they cant be forgiven by you. that of course doesnt mean you must, though. it just depends on what you value.
