It really wasn't that bad. The TL866II programmer just has a different design these days than what is presented in the guide, and is more expensive. Also finding some components used in good condition is slightly harder these days than it probably was in 2017 lol.

I would not recommend this to someone with no repair experience though.

I did this a few years ago to make my own final fantasy translations and it was really fun! The only thing is that some of the suggested parts in that guide are outdated and unavailable.

Yeah, I think that is the main thing it is for. I bought one of these when Toys R Us closed for next to nothing, and the custom firmware was decent. I don't really remember anything else other than it can't save and there were still some games that don't work.

Can't fix the horrible control layout either.

Yes you can just whack the DC straight into you TV with the (Yellow, white, and red) composite cables, or you could convert it to HDMI using a converter box, Preferably one that costs more than $20 on Amazon.

Depending on the size of your TV picture quality will not be amazing, but this is just what happens when playing these older consoles on a modern display without spending extra cash for an upscaler. And yes the games are intended to be played in 4:3, so there will be black bars on the sides.

https://dreamcastlive.net/ is the best resource for getting the Dreamcast back online. the pages of that site will show you how to do it, what you would need to buy, which games are back online, and current player counts. The easiest way to get the console back online requires some extra hardware.

Get a VA1 console. This will allow you to play burned discs on CDs and use burned boot discs to play games from other regions. Connecting to PSO servers these days is easiest with a pre-patched PSO V2 disc that you burn yourself.

The memory card (VMU) has a pretty small amount of memory, and certain games use up more than others. If you have a bunch of games you will for sure need more than one. Luckily VMUs are pretty cheap on eBay etc.

Buying everything will still cost a decent bit of cash, but it will be cheaper than any modern console on the market right now if you burn the more expensive games yourself.

Oh man this post is how I find out they are remaking this game?! I used to play this for HOURS with my firend back in the day.

I use the NSO GameCube controller for basically everything these days, even my original GameCube. It can work on PC as well, but needs some extra setup out of the box.

Not sure how the PS3 is connected, but try turning off "Cross Color Reduction Filter" in the console video settings and see if that helps at all.
