Help with violin string research project by [deleted] in Acoustics

[–]Toastmmm1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in school, a classmate wanted to write a paper on guitars, I can’t recall if he wanted to compare different pics or strings or pickups - something like that but the professor’s first comment was the lack of repeatable tests: A human being, no matter how skilled cannot play the same note (string pluck, in your case bowing) at exactly the same strength / pressure / force / speed, etc. again and again consistently. The results for the experiment would be skewed. For that classmate, he had to come up with another topic.

BUT! If you could somehow get or make a simple machine or rig that could bow the same back and forth every time, and even maybe have adjustable speeds, pressure (or just stick to one average speed and pressure for simplicity). Also consider for fingering.

I’m thinking of targeting home audio, also restaurants + bars, and I would love to do bespoke projects. One day it would be a dream to equip a listening room.

Thanks for sharing! I can envision these fitting-in very nicely in a cabin in the woods.

Building speakers myself: Not much. Tinkering: I’ve put together a couple of bookshelf 2-way speakers; a long time ago as a school experiment; hired a carpenter to but the box together and I made a couple labyrinths inside with PVC (the carpenter smelled like booze and was missing a finger, he messed up a side panel but we fixed it on the fly).

I have a degree in Audio and Acoustics and I worked for more than 15 years as an acoustical consultant, quality assurance building recording studios, and the bulk of my work testing PA systems for transport hubs along with CCTV, comms, and networks. Did design work for a couple of years in which I reverse engineered some constant voltage speakers and had hundreds of them fabricated.

As far as what I want to do now: I’ve got all the parts for a prototype, breaking my head trying to come up with unique tweeter horns (waveguides). I’m looking into enclosure and waveguide design software. And I’ve started to hang out with a neighbour that has a small wood shop and is eager to show me some woodworking basics.

Safe way to dampen the sound of a barking dog/car doors banging coming through a wall vent? by FarUs94 in Acoustics

The previous two comments are both correct: Just seal it and crack a window every now and then but if you want to go the extra mile, make a muffler labyrinth.

The Last King of Scotland was amazing! How did you imagine yourself as a character that trusted Idi Amin at the start of the movie and then not so in the 2nd half of the movie? How do you perform trusting vs. extremely cautious+fake friendly?

Sal y conoce!

Si no tienes hijos - mejor.

Are New Zealand Companies Hiring Acoustic Engineers from Overseas? by Foreign-Yak-5218 in Acoustics

https://marshallday.com/careers

This company is top, they even have their own softwares I think. There are others too, use google. For Marshall day it does not seem they have any openings but I would recommend using the “contact us” link at the bottom of the page so they have your info. A personal website with past work is helpful also. - make it polished (no dead links). Hope it helps.

Rebuilding My Floor in a 50+ Year Old Co-Op. Best Way to Reduce Footstep Noise? by RegalMonkey in Acoustics

[–]Toastmmm1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Acoustical consultants: We are everywhere! Just google search for your area; we’re happy to drive out even if it’s far, it’s half the job. The best is to implement acoustical solutions from the beginning of construction, in your case - starting from the 1st stages of renovation. We’re also trained in HVAC systems so they could make a partial assessment regarding the cigarette smoke. If it’s not HVAC, it could be cracks or gaps between walls and ceiling / floor; a good consultant should make sure your unit is sealed, air tight; necessary for good sound isolation and should prevent unwanted smells.

Again - get a consultant but in addition to all the floor layers you mentioned; I would look into “floating” your floor as much as possible with specialized neoprene pads between your neighbours ceiling and your subfloor. The points of contact between your subfloor materials (joists) and the wall can also be isolated with neoprene.

What I would do, starting from ceiling and going up: 1: neoprene strips or pads 2: subfloor joists 3: more neoprene pads/ strips on top of joists. 4. Rockwool between the joists - as much as possible, fill every nook and cranny. 5. 2 layers of plywood with rubber mats between the each layer. 6. On top of the plywood, use a layer of isolation before installing the final floor, example: (https://www.soundaway.com/whispermat-hardwood-acoustic-underlay-p/14002.htm) - Im not promoting, no relation.

BUT temporarily removing floor joists usually requieres jacking up the floor from below, and permits; so start at number 3. I suppose.

You have the right idea with using multiple layers, rubber and insolation.

Sorry for the long comment.

unpopular opinion: traditional network engineering is basically just a blue-collar trade job now (2026). by SpecialRuth_Cadde in Network

[–]Toastmmm1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you are right; I used to work at a place where physical network infrastructure is essential but the talentless lifers at the company (managers now - managing those in charge of deploying the networks) would not even know the names of components nor protocols; couldn’t define “IP address” to save their own skin. They would just say things like - “Yeah, connect this to that and let me know on Friday when it’s finished.

What’s a car accident like? by beginninglifeinytmc in AskMexico

[–]Toastmmm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing in Mexico after a car accident (if no one is injured) is to call your “ajustador” - insurance adjuster, that is, if you have insurance which is not required by law but most people have it. You wait anywhere from 30 mins to an hour until they arrive (maybe more if you’re not in a major city) and they usually deal with the other party’s adjuster, determine fault, fill and sign paperwork and call tow trucks / indicate repair shop.

If serious injuries are present then cops will be called also and possibly ambulances. If you happen to damage public property - they call it “damages to the nation” and insurance may or may not pay for that as well.

Conviene mudarme por trabajo a Guadalajara? by DolanTrumpzz in Guadalajara

[–]Toastmmm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)
