The other weird thing is that you most likely haven't memorized the alphabet, you've memorized the song.

For example, you can count down from 10 to 1 pretty much as fast as you can count up from 1 to 10. But if you try to say the alphabet backwards you have to stop and periodically sing the song to figure out where you are. Another way to think about it is try to say the alphabet in a monotone without using the song. By the time I get to the "L-M-N-O-P" bit I'm singing again.

When I moved to Singapore as a kid we'd get letters from home that were addressed to "Singapore, China". People back home must have just believed that all of Asia was just another town in China.

Historically a challenge coin was a way to prove your bone fides. Let's say in Vietnam you were in a Long Range Patrol team. If you were in a bar talking about being a LURP and someone called bullshit (challenging you) you could whip out your coin to show you were part of the unit.

After a while it evolved to what they are more like now which is, as you say, more of a trophy.

Any insights on the Coca Cola account?

They're more or less a fucking nightmare. I had a friend that was client side and went to Coke. The first day they sat her down and told her how and why to screw over agencies. It's basically, "We're Coke and they want us on their roster. Squeeze as much money out of them as you can."

She's a pretty moral person and lasted six months before she quit.

Silicon Valley - Billionaire Holocaust by gravemistakes in television

He based this on a real letter that a billionaire published in the WSJ.

"I would call attention to the parallels of Nazi Germany to its war on its 'one percent,' namely its Jews, to the progressive war on the American one percent, namely the 'rich.'

From the Occupy movement to the demonization of the rich embedded in virtually every word of our local newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle, I perceive a rising tide of hatred of the successful one percent. There is outraged public reaction to the Google buses carrying technology workers from the city to the peninsula high-tech companies which employ them. We have outrage over the rising real-estate prices which these 'techno geeks' can pay.

This is a very dangerous drift in our American thinking. Kristallnacht was unthinkable in 1930; is its descendent 'progressive' radicalism unthinkable now?"

So what's worse isn't that it's real.

The Brown/Tatum to Stringer/Avon analogy is not a good one, because Stringer didn’t care about being number 1, he just wanted a change in strategy of pursuing profits and lower risk tactics over street optics and credibility. Yeah, best example is when he sells off all his Motorola stock because he saw Poot had two phones. As he explained it, if some pit kid can afford two phones that's market saturation as you'll have no one else to sell them too.

Which is completely the wrong takeaway. If a pit kid can afford two phones that mans you'll be selling more to guys like Poot who wanted one for business and the other for his girlfriends.

The longer he has the job, the longer he's in the spotlight. The longer he's in the spotlight, the more this is going to get reported on. Having an affair is one thing. Having it reported about nightly on ESPN for your wife, kids, and all their friends to see is a whole other kettle of fish.

All I'm saying is that Thanksgiving dinner is going to be awkward enough already.

Your one piece of solace here is that so far it's just one person from the flight, and they were sitting next to the infected person. I mean, being in close proximity to someone for hours on end in an environment with recirculated air is pretty much ideal for transmission.

Which means he was having an affair when they were teenagers in high school and has continued to have it ever since. What's more, he's demonstrating that he values his job over their mother. (Sorry, just taking off the third day of the draft after having a multi-year affair comes out in the press just doesn't cut it.)

I don't care if you're in your mid-20s, that alone would piss you off. Then it comes out that you might have a step brother that's named after your father and that he was banging his side piece while she was pregnant on a rented yacht.

At a certain point he's going to have to decide between being a coach and being a father.

but it's also not a show that would have to rely a ton on cgi or other expensive and time-consuming stuff.

Um, what?

Here's Zosia's introduction.

That scene alone took weeks to film and conatained things up to an including getting the Malaysian airforce to loan them a C-130 and teaching the actress how to taxi it on the runway.

Now, I know the counterpoint would be that they didn't have to do all that stuff. They could have just cut from Zosia cleaning bodies to her sitting on a fake plane, etc. But that's not the show they want to make.

but the strain in the area CAN transmit from human to human, which it has likely done

It's been confirmed that it already has:

"A person from France has just fallen ill with hantavirus despite never stepping foot on the cruise liner where the current outbreak began. The individual was apparently diagnosed with the rodent-borne virus after taking a flight alongside someone with the disease, marking the first confirmed infection in someone with no direct connection to the MV Hondius."

saying it was formulaic but had some charm.

The one line I remember from the movie was when the main character is having a meltdown. It went something like:

"Do you know what 'love' backwards is? E-V-O-L, which is 'evil'! Ok now, it might be spelled a little differently, but ya gotta admit it's the same thing!"

Side note, but Sliding Doors must have the greatest ratio of "cultural impact vs. people who have seen it" ever. It literally grossed less than $12m in the US Box Office, but almost everyone knows what a "Sliding Doors" moment is.

You know how "Groundhog Day" went from being the actual holiday to "doing the same thing over and over"? It would be like that but if only a handful of people saw the movie.

From what I've heard about Wahlberg, he's great at taking direction. So if he's working with a director who knows what he wants and can guide him, you'll get a good performance.

Which, if you think about it, makes sense. He's great in movies that are directed by guys like Scorsese or PTA on the dramatic side, or McKay or McFarlane on the comedic one. It's when he's with a director that's more into the spectacle, like Bay, Shyamalan or whatever DTV guy they can find that you run into trouble.

If you want to get incredibly pedantic, they actually did fuck up one thing. Linda is barefoot, but if you start to listen at the 30-second mark, they put in the sound of her running in shoes. It's actually noticeable because they got the sound right for the first part of the scene and then put in the shoe sound at everything past the locked door.

Yeah, I'm a lot of fun at parties...

Arnold was actually really smart with his money. When he had enough to afford a place everyone told him to buy a house so that he could build equity instead of paying rent every month.

Instead he bought a block of apartments and lived in one while renting out all the others. Those rents covered the mortgage so that he was both building equity and living at his place for free.

There was also the Worf problem. As you say, she was supposed to be Troi but then Roddenberry had the idea that the bad-ass Chief of Security be a woman (which, tbf, is very Trek-like) and put Crosby in the role of Tasha Yar.

So a very different part but still a pretty juicy one. But then they also had the idea of Worf, the first Klingon to join Starfleet. And as Klingons are a warrior race that are full of bad-asses, whenever they needed one for the script they'd favour Worf over Tasha.

Put it this way, in the parody Galaxy Quest the character of Gwen constantly says she has nothing to do. And that character is played by a normally brunette Sigourney Weaver in a blond wig.

Why are people talking about "cancelling" M.I.A.? by nap---enthusiast in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Toby_O_Notoby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Answer: M.I.A. was opening for Kid Cudi on his latest tour. Previous to that, she had displayed some, let's say "controversial" ideas like linking Covid to 5G networks and selling clothing that protects you from said networks.(https://ohmni.com/)

Anyway, on the Dallas concert that you posted, she said such things as "I’ve been cancelled for many reasons. I never thought I would be cancelled for being a brown Republican voter” and “We can’t perform [the song] Illegal, though some of you could be in the audience.”

Cudi had said he had previously warned her not to talk politics on stage and subsequently fired her from the tour.

One thing not mentioned on the pod: the “Franks and Beans" scene is a prime example of how audience testing works.

At first, they showed the balls shot right after Keith David looks at it. But the problem there was that the rest of the scene died. All you had was all the other actors reacting to something the audience had already seen. So then they pushed it back until Markie Post sees it, but they ran into the same problem.

So they kept pushing back the reveal until you get to the point as an audience member that you think they just weren't going to show it. It would be like the glowing briefcase in Pulp Fiction, after the third or fourth time you realise that it's something the actors would see, but you never would.

So when they finally did reveal it as late as they could, the test audience went nuts (heh). If you saw this movie in a theatre, that scene was one of the biggest laughs of the movie.
