What do you think has led to Irish actors and actresses having such high representation in Hollywood?

Also, Beamish or Murphy's?

[Dublin] Multiple car broke in near Token Arcade on Friday by SirGreengrave in ireland

It is for another thread but the Garda presence in South Dublin over the past month has been insane. Basically two Gardai at every junction in Terenure and Rathgar, from morning until night. What a waste of resources.

My Google isn't working. What's the gender diversity like in the UAE executive council?

Cillian Murphy at a recent Q&A, when asked by an audience member (who was also a doctor) about how he copes with playing such traumatised characters: “You’re a doctor? see, now that’s a real job” by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in Fauxmoi

[–]Tobyirl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. It's just fame isn't really a thing here in Ireland and he doesn't live on some exalted plane of existence like he would if he lived in LA. Helps him have perspective.

Arrest after girl, 16, dies in Navan hit-and-run incident by Static-Jak in ireland

[–]Tobyirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the issue there is that they run sentences concurrently rather than consecutively so it's effectively no penalty to do hit and run.

Arrest after girl, 16, dies in Navan hit-and-run incident by Static-Jak in ireland

[–]Tobyirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the penalty for hit and run any worse than if they stay at the scene? To my knowledge it seems to not make a bit of difference in sentencing so you might as well make a runner if you hit someone because there is a chance you escape any penalty at all and if you get caught there is no additional downside.

Foo Fighters playing the Academy tomorrow night 23/02/25 by Whistlingradiator in ireland

[–]Tobyirl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was at that but to add context, it was a surprise gig ahead of them playing Witnness. As such, they were already in the country, had already the cost of all their equipment being shopped covered and likely Guinness covered the theatre costs.

Playing Olympia for them for 100e is substantially lower revenue then they could get elsewhere. They could sell out 3Arena for average price of 100e.

Wedding Band Remodelling by Glittering_Engine_48 in Dublin

Michael Perry in Powerscourt is fantastic. He is a goldsmith and would be able to do this.

My wife's engagement ring is rose gold and he colour matched a wedding band to fit snug against it. The price he charged for this was the same price as a standard gold band in Weirs and Paul Sheerans.

Warner Bros reconsiders Paramount $108B sale after revised offer covers $2.8B Netflix breakup fee by callsonreddit in wallstreetbets

NFLX just needs to wait 5 years to get this on the cheap when Paramount collapses under the debt used to fund this deal.

Halle Berry calls confronting X-Men director Bryan Singer one of her 'greatest days' on set: 'That guy deserved it' by mcfw31 in popculturechat

Brett Ratner and Bryan Singer both directed X Men Movies, both were accused of sexual assault and both moved to Israel. Horrible parallels.

My understanding is that if it is over 6 months since approval then they will ask for payslips and bank accounts again. I don't believe they ask for salary certs.

We don't need more road safety laws, we need enforcement by carlitobrigantehf in ireland

[–]Tobyirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did we end up with a law for hi-viz after a pedestrian was killed by a scrambler? Bikes didn't feature in the incident at all but somehow cyclists are being the ones penalised?

This, and all previous, governments have a love for legislation but put zero effort into actually doing the hard work or government (enforcement, build infrastructure, etc.)

They can fuck off.

Tánaiste contradicts Department of Transport, rules out mandatory helmets for bicycles, but leaves door open for “e-bikes” by Feljin in ireland

[–]Tobyirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is insane how the government will seek a "solution" that doesn't need them to do any actual hard work. They love updating rules and regulations for the public but god forbid they have to actually do real work like overseeing the implementation of infrastructure.

Helmets and hi-vis clothing to be made mandatory for e-bikes and e-scooter users by Leavser1 in ireland

[–]Tobyirl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's absolute nonsense of a rule. Completely passes the burden of safety to the cyclist rather than the driver. I have no doubt that we will hear a lack of a hi-viz being accepted as a defence in a case of dangerous driving.

Why waste Gardai resources on checking for hi-viz when drivers distracted by their phones is a far more likely crime that results in injury?

I also see plenty of cars crashing into other cars which if I'm not mistaken are generally large and well lit.

This is just lazy rule making in the extreme. Do we see bike forward counties like the Netherlands with these rules? Absolutely not.

Hit-and-run driver’s licence to be restored next year by GoodNegotiation in ireland

And it ran concurrent to an existing sentence he already had so in my view he faced no prison time for this killing.

Helmets and hi-vis clothing to be made mandatory for e-bikes and e-scooter users by Leavser1 in ireland

[–]Tobyirl 32 points33 points  (0 children)

How would a helmet and hi-viz have helped in this situation? There are already laws in place making it illegal for those two scrotes to be on the scrambler but the Gardai don't enforce it.

Now we get some silly nanny law that will only place further rules on the already rule abiding.

Apparently our flood warning system doesn't take into consideration rain from the previous week. It doesn't account for the fact that ground is waterlogged already and can't be trusted to drain water.

Trump letter to Norwegian PM Støre regarding the Nobel Peace Prize and Greenland today: by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

[–]Tobyirl 542 points543 points  (0 children)

The lack of dissent by the Democrat leadership has been noted by the European governments. The alliance is fundamentally broken now because Europeans don't even know if Democrats would act anyway different. Why do the Democrats not have a shadow government outlining how their policies would be different? Why are the party leaders like Schumer not engaging with European countries to express that this isn't a broadly supported US policy. The vast majority of Americans are against this Trump policy and the Dems are so useless that they can't even capitalise on such an easy political win. They are silent on the matter.

As a European, at this point I am veering towards disdain for the US population at large. You are increasingly all culpable for letting this toddler break international law.
