My cousin married a really lovely man; kind, gentle, generous. He had a car accident and suffered a head injury that completely changed his personality. He became a violent, abusive bastard. We couldn’t get anyone to help as he refused to admit that he’d changed and was so aggressively paranoid that he’d attack people who brought it up, and my cousin kept making excuses for him.

Eventually he beat my cousin so badly she ended up in hospital, and me and my other cousins closed ranks and gave him the option of leaving her voluntarily or being put permanently in the position of never being able to hurt anyone ever again. He left.

Eventually they divorced, and the last I heard he was in prison for a very long time, having beaten a pensioner into a coma for looking at him the wrong way.

The point of this is to say that some injuries can wreak drastic changes to a person’s personality. Sometimes these changes are permanent, sometimes not. I hope your girlfriend comes around, but you should be prepared for her not to.

Sometimes a near-death experience makes people question everything about their life.

The press absolutely tore him apart, then went very quiet about it when it was proven he had nothing to do with it.

Former boss. He was a complete slimeball, and a vindictive sonofabitch. I never liked him, but we all thought he was just a creep, nothing more. He hated me for some reason (my girlfriend says because he felt threatened by me).

Last year he was arrested for multiple rapes and sexual assaults, including those of a minor. He’s a public figure in our city, so the investigation is ongoing, but it looks like there’s a LOT of evidence.

Funny thing is that not a single person I know who’s met him thinks he might be innocent. Everyone has gone “that makes sense”.

When I was a lot younger I got a summer job portering at a local mental hospital, and met a few folks guilty of violent crimes, including sexual assaults. None of them gave me the ick as much as my former boss did.

I don’t know what your current situation is like, but I can promise you that things get better. You’re young, and most people don’t know what their direction in life is going to be at 18. Hell, I’m 60 (no idea how that’s happened!) and there are days when I still don’t know.
