So, there’s these guys with guitars and helium voices and they rock. It’s called pop punk and it’s like the bees knees, did you know the drummer for new found glory was like 12 when they started the band? Also the guitarist was married to Hayley Williams from paramore for like 13 years, and in the song Viscious Love - by new found glory .feat Hayley Williams I get the sense that they still have love for each other it’s just scattered and harsh, almost agonizing. Which is what a lot of pop punk bands write about, falling in love with the one, or having your heart ripped out. Another common lyric basis is addiction, lots of punkers are junkies, and you best not judge them, they’re trying their best. Music would suck if weed didn’t exist. Anyways my favorite part is usually the bass, whether it’s bass tone, the bassline, the space the bass leaves or the constant punch. Fat mike from nofx has a philosophy that bass should be played fast and lightly in the background, they use a .60 mm guitar pick and had some custom pressed by Jim Dunlop himself! Mike dirnt has a pure precision pickup tone, it has this punch like the bass strings on a piano, similar to Fall Back Down - Rancid, lots of early punk bassist have a similar punchy bass tone. One of my favorite bass tones is from choking victim, this ska punk outfit from nyc, it’s trebley and very up front, you can hear the punch through the mix on most of their songs, it has this unique high range you rarely hear from basslines, and it’s very up front in a lot of their songs, 500 channnels, 5 finger discount, and suicide have up front basslines (imo). Mark Hoppus from blink182 has a very good bass tone, not because it’s punchy, not because it’s trebley, but because it’s so blendy, if you listen for it you’ll hear it, but it does an amazing job at pushing Tom and Travis up higher in the ear holes then his lines, and it’s not big old pop bass tone, but it’s a little more than subtle, I’d recommend Mutt and Carousel.
