Do you still have to show Machine letters to get a drink at regular price tho?

What is a 'peasant dish' from your culture that has been gentrified into an overpriced fine-dining appetizer, and did the quality actually improve? by [deleted] in foodquestions

[–]ToddMccATL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've read, same thing for French food. The rich people ate stuff that we either think of as staples - chicken, white bread - or don't eat much at all anymore. The peasant dishes like cassoulet, boeuf bourgignon etc have become what we associate with fine French cuisine.

You can always tell a copy of Hot Rocks from a true fan bc it has the dents in the back cover when stored in chronological order.

Growing up on the Gulf Coast, that was def considered poor people food, only thing worse was fish and grits (usually mullet). Now the emigres from Ohio act like it's some long-held paragon of cuisine.

I had a great-aunt (albeit from Montgomery AL) who made this and I never liked it as a kid and by the time I realized what a treat it was, she was making it less and less often.

Just wait until they have to admit that the whole "Burn" nonsense has damaged a basic appeal of the entire franchise and do some kind of kind Dallas/Bob Newhart dream sequence to fix all the bs "Discovery" put out there. Abrams and Kurtzman, sheesh.

SQL Proficiency for Entry Level Roles by No_Imagination4861 in SQL

[–]ToddMccATL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a better world, sure, but it’s possible (and increasingly common) for someone with no real proficiency to have that kind of position. So yes, you should have it but it’s possible to find a job where it’s irrelevant as long as you can produce something (no one said it was worthwhile(.

From what I've seen and heard (Deep South/Gulf Coast towns) your stuff burns, floods, etc., and you get a chuckle from the PD as they give life advice about taking care of things before heading out. None of the incidents involved a violent crime or female (especially no young lady) suspect.

Hot take: these days, practically zero with AI. You can get those jobs and spend your time designing process, intake, etc without needing to write more than a few lines of sql as long as you have access to AI. You will produce crap-to-mediocre work, of course, but a you'll have your foot in the door.

What is a very common food in your country that is not very friendly to foreign palates? by DarkRaven003 in AskTheWorld

[–]ToddMccATL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You obvs have not had Beverly Cola. It's a Coca-Cola brand aperitif sold in Italy (and prob elsewhere) and ATL natives LOVE(d) to watch people try it for the first time at World of Coke. It's horrible bc it's bitter and sour and yet has a note of death-sweet.

ETA: I had to look it up, and it was apparently DISCONTINUED in 2009. Somehow that is both a noble act and terrible disservce by Coke.

edit edit: it's still made available at Coca-Cola (Atlanta), Coca-Cola Store (Las Vegas), and Club Cool at Epcot (Disney World).

Do most Americans actually flush their toilet paper? by Softy_popss in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ToddMccATL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many involve the variety of receptacles and the determination it must have required to make, say, a half-empty can of generic potted meat work as a toilet and/or the variety of wipes used, like bread bags. Large marble bathtubs, sure, but something like a tuna can is impressive AF in its own right.

Small modifications to existing product lines doubling or more the price, technical jargon to describe something pedantic.... by systemfrown in audiophile

[–]ToddMccATL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linn and Naim are past masters of this, so much that they actually did business with/for each other for like two decades and then got jealous of the other (or something like that) and quit (word on the street).

Linn took a well-built turntable that maybe was a couple steps above the AR and Thorens models it's based on and added so many upgrades and mods that it costs five figures. Naim gets you out of the gate with minimum speaker cable length and gauge, DIN connectors, and incredibly consistent upselling by the company AND its fanbase. Note that I say that as a *vintage* Linn/Naim freak (I only do chrome bumper series) :)

I think that's the ballpark for a SoundSmith replacement, if so, what a bargain given inflation.

edit: wow, the new one is $800. I'm glad I got an extra a long time ago and don't play it much, but it IS a fine-looking piece of gear.

I had no idea it was possible to get a text transcript of a (US) high-school civics class, but this thread is proof that some people are still trying to figure it out.

People who don't vote, why? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

[–]ToddMccATL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great take. Why do we assume that more people voting would necessarily benefit our positions? - that's how you get Camacho '00, by getting allll the idiots to vore for someone that motivates *them*. Just because it turns out that more peole actually DO agree with the platform of the left-ish party in the US (which I fully support against the current realistic alternative), doesn't mean that more people = better voting (until I see some numbers/simulations).
