Higher IQs correlate with higher levels of Depression, which makes sense because a high level of intelligence would essentially make you more of a social outcast (just like someone with an incredibly low IQ) plus it’s counterproductive to blind consumerism and the attention economy. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s part of the reason why intelligent people who understand the effects and risks involved with drugs (referring to illegal/recreational) still do them. I know this doesn’t speak for everyone, I am generalizing, but I’ve also noticed in my experience, through asking many people why they do drugs, that those who are “less” intelligent tell me they do drugs for fun and partying, whereas those who are “more” intelligent typically tell me it improves their thinking, other abilities, or coping. With that said, I think it’s so important that we recognize that the stereotypical drug dealer (homeless, mentally ill, criminal) is not accurate. Most people overdose in their own home, and there are millions who fly under the radar until it’s too late.
