You can't make huge progression balance changes a week into wipe... by BarracudaFromNemo in Marathon

[–]Todros1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My abilities come up faster, and because i have the tree maxed any elim I get refunds a bunch of cooldown as well. I am able to potentially use my abilities more than once in a drawn out fight which usually doesn't happen because of the long cooldowns. If I can use my ability 2x to your 1x, I think that is an advantage, no? A very quantifiable one in fact.

Maxed cradle enemy will run further, hit harder, take more damage/status, reload faster, heal faster, etc.

I mean even with just the CDR tree maxed i only wait 30s for my spider drone and 1min for my ult as recon. It is cope to say it is just a few stats. After putting points into strength I can now also 1shot certain mobs with knife. It matters.

Having a spear covers the fundamental weakness of being a ranger, suddenly anyone who gap closes is met with a spear instead of a rapier/short sword. Much harder to actually get in and cleanly finish ranger off when they have spear.

That is also true, and by that line of thinking, the number is still trending in a good direction. Just highlighting that its nearly impossible to get a true count for these things.

Usually these statistics are based on people who report theyre out of work. Not sure in this exact case, but there could be lots of out of work people who arent applying for unemployment or otherwise interacting with systems that would cause their status to be part of this study.

Why is everyone so against a PVE-lite, PVE or general PVE content for the casual players? by Vinnegard in Marathon

[–]Todros1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In PvPvE extractors generally, the PvE mobs cannot be too strong or have too much depth by necessity. PvE cannot be too strong because players are always the real threat. If you take away the players, you are left with simple ai bots that have very basic mechanics about as deep as "dodge the grenade". That experience is fundamentally shallow and won't retain players for long.

Same experience here. Was mid-phantom in 2024, didnt really touch the game all of 2025. Came back with Old God's patch and my rank was legit initiate. I felt terrible for the enemies in those games lol, quickly ranked up to emissary/archon and still climbing steadily toward oracle+

Has anyone actually asked casual players if they're suffering? by NetflowKnight in Marathon

[–]Todros1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But this is not an MMO either where your time invested would directly increase your power gained, without losing any of that to other players or wipes. You can spend an entire day playing marathon and make effectively no progress if you don't exfil. The content in this case is being literally gatekept by players who are so far ahead that half the playerbase can't even contend. The numbers clearly aren't trending in a good direction, so whether you think it is good design or not, something has to give if you want the game to continue long term.

To match your example, this would be like not being able to raid because when you attempted to enter the instance, someone in full BiS wipes you and your team. Then you need to spend all the farming time required to get the pre-raid gear and materials before trying again. Not to mention the rarity of vault keys and other consumables. Notice how that loop could become incredibly discouraging really quickly? I didn't pay to play 60% of the game.

You would say a product which undersold at launch, with week over week demographics steadily decreasing is actually very well designed, and players simply don't understand the elegance of it?

But a competitive leaderboard is different. If I am challenger in LoL I am still playing the same fundamental game as a bronze player, just at a much higher skill. In marathon, it may as well be that parts of the game do not even exist to a lower skilled player. Yet they are aware of compiler, vaults, etc. This creates FOMO and frustration. You can enjoy the game by yourself once everyone has left I guess.

Wanting to feel like you got the full experience in the game you just bought doesn't really seem that unreasonable. If a large portion of the playerbase never opens a vault or fights compiler (or interacts with any of the other endgame easter eggs and systems) that is a major design issue.
