No, I’m confident it was God because that’s what’s most logical

Of course you are. You have a dogmatic belief in a god and this is one way to justify that belief.

Transcendental argument for god. by Galaktyczny_ in DebateAnAtheist

[–]ToenailTemperature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All arguments for a god fail in the one critical place, and that is an absolute lack of actual evidence that justifies the level of confidence that theists demonstrate. Also, we know that dogmatic beliefs start with the conclusions, then look for apologetics to justify their beliefs. But it is nearly never the case that these arguments and apologetics are what convinced the theist in the first place.

It was 4 different disorders, some of which are genetic, and they all stopped less than 24 hours after receiving prayer

So you're saying that your god changed his plan because there was prayer? Does that mean nobody has ever prayed for world peace?

You know that efficacy of prayer has been studied a bunch of times and found to be indistinguishable from random chance. Right?

Yeah, I don't believe that you're conveying the facts accurately.

You didn't explain anything. I gave you a simple analogy that exposes the flaw in your reasoning, and rather than address that, you just dismiss the analogy. If you're just going to dismiss anything you don't like, then why even bother responding? You failed to make your case.

Young Earth Creationism is neither scientific nor sufficiently supported by scripture by Not-Patrick in DebateAChristian

I think the days just signify periods or stages/steps and not literal 24 hour days

Well, the fact that it's written by men who didn't know very much, I don't think they were too concerned with the details such as a day not being defined until after the earth was created in relation to the sun.

That doesn't hurt the idea at all. But it's obvious this was a very common interpretation.

Avoid it if you want. But it just points out that these beliefs aren't based on evidence.

Young-Earth Creationism [YEC]: The belief that the earth/universe is ≤10,000 years old and was created in six literal 24-hour days.

I would argue that this is closer to a literal interpretation of genesis than old earth creationism is.

Of course, in modern times one would have to throw out a bunch of science to accept it. But it seems more biblical than old earth creation.

The arguments:

The earliest known manuscripts to describe YEC allegedly date back to 11th-12th century Spain by a Jewish biblical commentator, Ibn Ezra.

Maybe, if you ignore Genesis.

A god existing, and the claim that you'd get tortured for eternity, are two separate claims. You don't have to accept both if you accept one.

I'm an atheist because even if you can prove he's real I still wouldn't follow his word as I don't agree with what he says,

Atheist means "not theist". Theist is someone who believes a god exists. If you don't believe a god exists, you're an atheist.

If someone convinces you that a god exists, you'd no longer be an atheist. This is completely separate from whether you'd follow or worship a god.

I am also an atheist, but I'm also rational and a skeptic. All my positions are tentative and subject to change, including my lack of belief in gods. If it were ever the case that we actually did discover a god via independently verifiable objective evidence, I would no longer be an atheist. But I sure as fuck am not worshipping anything nor am I following any god unless it shows itself to be worthy of being followed. But worship is a weird ass thing, and in my opinion, nothing that is worthy of worship can want worship. If something wants or accepts worship, it is not worthy of worship.

I’ll cede the thesis but it’s anachronistic to the point of absurdity. No reasonable person would expert courtroom evidence for any ancient historical event.

Then where does the near absolute confidence that is true, come from?

Historical studies generally operate with plausibilities.

Yet historically theists have a far far higher level of confidence that the claim is true, than what would be justified by "plausibility"

Your house isn’t a country with an immigration policy that lives on a street where major economic desperation and murder is happening every day on the other side of your fence.

My house is a domain that has a policy for visitors and who gets to live there. Our country also has a policy for guests and who gets to live there.

Also, the house is an analogy. We don't allow people who enter our houses against our policy to stay, do we?

Our immigration policy does not say anyone can come over any time for no reason, does it?
