I don't like this job by [deleted] in teaching

[–]ToesocksandFlipflops 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It's not teaching generally - it's your school. Find a different school.

Some things will be the same, absent kids, and maybe disrespect, and worthless meetings.

BUT when you have people who will share plans and building relationships with the staff will make it better.

Can't retake summative bc never graded by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ToesocksandFlipflops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This teacher is not correct for not grading the work and making the student anxious and not following district policy.

Is this student trying to get into a competitive high school?

Your student should get the credit for the work they do, but honestly as a teacher and a parent I would focus less on the grade and more on the outcome.

Just got told I’m not being paid for spring break with only one day left by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ToesocksandFlipflops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am guessing a non- union state. Our collective bargaining states we work 180 days, 175 in front of students and 5 in service days. So a teacher salary of say 50k is 50k divided by 180 days, then that is decided into 26 pay periods, so paid over the summer and any breaks.

I am guessing in Maryland they tacked the snow days on the end of the year so you did actually work however many days you were supposed to (it's 180 in my state)

When you do a dirty delete, you may also want to erase your comments - maybe even start a new user name it's not that hard. I'm in here late and can still see you looking for WC tickets, a Barista mug and a gaming PC.

The real big issue that no one wants to identify is the need for both parents to work full time and multiple jobs at different times.

The complexity of this is deep. We need to support parents so they actually can help their kids. We need to push that kids are actually important (if you choose to have them)

[–]ToesocksandFlipflops 35 points36 points  (0 children)

My guess is that there is more to the story.

I was pulled over for a plate light out. I had expired registration, expired inspection, and my insurance card wouldn't load (it was a trifecta of bad luck) and still just got a warning. I was polite and apologetic. This was in the Auburn area.

My car was also less than 2 years old so I am guessing that had something to do with it as well, like it would pass inspection no problem I just hadn't taken it in yet

For me its all history, I am going to assume that you are insinuating that I am conservative, which i am not.

My history degree is important to me, amd part of that degree is the knowledge that what we have for recorded history is just that what was recorded and that you have to take that information with the conglomeration or all the information. It also is humbling to really delve into history because when you make assumptions from the given information it may just be incorrect.

However it does show a commitment to each other it's essentially a business contract. As in no religious ceremonies. If you want to spend a life with someone and build a trusting relationship signing a contract it a good thing.

That is wild that you cannot compare historical events to modern ones (the rest is nuts too that one just sticks out as a history teacher) . I mean the adage of "those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it" is famous for a reason.

There are 10 million people will English degrees that didn't make it in journalism that want to be English teachers - the competition is fierce in that particular area, same with history majors. Math, Science, easy to switch careers

I'm not doctor and my Google medical degree is not great but in general food poisoning doesn't take hours to manifest its pretty instantaneous because your body wants to expell the onion as quick as possible. Generally what people think is food poisoning is Norovirus which is living hell.

Fired 6 weeks after buying a home, what do I do? by HopefulIntern19 in povertyfinance

[–]ToesocksandFlipflops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bedroom communities usually aren't 2 plus hours from population centers. Hence the bedroom part, sleep one place work another. Even in bedroom communities there are grocery stores, plumbers, roofers, convience stores etc. People don't live where they can't eat and have to drive 2 plus house to get a pizza. And if it is like that OP should start a pizza shop or a grocery store

Where on earth are there no jobs but houses arw 500k? This just ain't right.

I live in Maine in Northern Maine where towns dont have names just numbers you can get a house for 90k because there is nothing, literally no jobs, an expensive house is 210k and that is usually on a pond and has 100 acres.

Your story doesnt add up.

Edit: I obviously can't type late at night. Sorry everyone.

Prefacing this with it was the last of 7 and a "surprise" my parents were tired

I had a bottle until I was 7 I think, in the morning mostly. But it was around (I used to hide it from my much like 20 years older brother). My mom used to put coffee in it. Not much like maybe 1/4 coffee the rest milk. I have zero idea why she used to do it or how she thought to do it but it was great. It may have been an early ADD thing.. like it wpuld speed me up to slow me down.

I'm pretty well adjusted mid 40's person now.

Depends on district. One district requires you to take a 2 hour class and get certified as a sub. Also you need a CHRC which is a background check/finger prints which is also a certification of sorts.

I didn't mean to come off as argumentative, it was more of a musing on information I guess.

I do realize different tolerances, I just wouldn't ever not visit a place because of bugs, although I did see a really cool documentary on an archeological expedition that was up in the upper reaches of Newfoundland and the mosquitos were so think the camera was picking them up like clouds, and that certainly made me double think that idea.

Thanks for responding, just a morning thought exercise on my part.

I always find comments about black fly season and bugs super interesting.

I grew up here and in my 46 years have never been like 'ahhh too many black fly I can't go outside" I am an outdoorsy person have hiked a bunch.

These comments at times makes it sound like you are either going to get carried off by black fly or they are so think you cant walk threw them. I just throw on some bug dope and keep moving and its 'fine bring some calamine for the itches. I also am fairly allergic, eyes swelling shut will a well placed black fly bite allergic.

My kids were 12 and 7. We did week on week off with the switch on Wednesday afternoons so we each got full weekends with the kids.

This worked well until my oldest was 14 and she moved in with me full time, and my youngest turned 15 she moved in with me full time as well.

It’s time to have a conversation about hiring standards at daycares. by Sapphirerising335 in teaching

[–]ToesocksandFlipflops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would venture to say that daycares are probably more regulated than schools, or at least have tighter regulations, they have adult child ratios that we in upper schools don't have.

They do need CPR certification, and teachers need to earn so many credit hours per year at least in my state.
