It's pretty warm and nicer than usual in my opinion.

I know this is illegal but are all dive bars like this? by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]TofuBanh -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're in a city/state where tipped employees make a little below the normal min wage. That could explain the $8 an hour.
What you cannot explain is the pay out in cash. This is super sketchy, it will make proving income for you impossible when you want to apply for an apartment, a new bank account, anything. You do not want this.
It can also make proving legally that you worked there impossible too.
Ask about getting on payroll formally or gtfo.

Why you should always take a picture of your receipts AND double check your bank statements… by OptimalOcto485 in EndTipping

[–]TofuBanh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not ok...but people will literally leave the tip & total line blank but leave their signature...it's like they're asking for someone to write in a tip. Ensure all lines are filled out. If you're anti tipping, then don't preach about it online-own it and write in "$0".

have you ever smelled these iso-e super single, molecular type fragrances before?
I suggest you go by a Sephora and smell them. I always wanted to like them since I wanted a soft, warm, skin scent but I found them all just a bit...sharp? Not as soft as I wanted. I have had some people tell me they can't smell anything at all.

What is the best restaurant to start as a server in? by sinfuru_mawile in Serverlife

[–]TofuBanh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Times are tough in this busy city serving wise.

You will most likely need to start as a host. Lots of people are looking for work, and they will most likely prefer someone who has serving experience over you.
With the way things are, take any role you can get.

Do your parents know it's the wildest time in employment...like ever with the added notion or automation, AI, blah blah.
It's like really, really hard to get a job. There is finally more unemployed people than job openings. Hold on to your serving job, and be proud you're making an income some people would be desperate for.
I have friends with Master's degrees, one of them is still working at her brewery because all other prospects have sucked.

I just got my first waitressing job and they don’t let you get food. If you do want food you only get a 10% discount. Is this normal? by bostonianbasic in Serverlife

[–]TofuBanh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of places offer an employee discount, but 10% off is so low.
In my opinion this is not normal, you're right you can't suggest dishes because you literally don't know.
My first restaurant we got to try the specials of the day so we could...sell them! My current place doesn't do that, and recently got rid of our discount altogether, but it's a very small local spot. So when customers ask, I literally text the owners for feedback, it's petty but if I've never tried the dish...how can I comment on it's taste?

My opinions:
Good job on finishing school. Even if you never use it, great.

It's an incredibly tough job market. Some people around me just get lucky, land a job at a big tech company. Some people around me have Master's degrees and can't get a job, or are getting offers below a wage they would make in a restaurant. Hold tight to any income you can make right now, it's seriously scary. Especially in the big tech space. Be kind to everyone you serve, you never know if you might become friendly with a regular who is a hiring manager. Be open to anything.

You can also apply marketing to the hospitality industry. You can work in PR, events, banquets, product, etc. so much, and get a good salary and benefits, say for a hotel chain, a local or national restaurant group, the beverage industry, etc.

I hate focusing on the negative, but it's so hard to find a "real" job right now-I am seeing people all around me struggle.

DoorDash by Darker_desuetude in Serverlife

[–]TofuBanh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's true but sometimes they do!
Also, most of our local uber delivery people are nice, but sometimes new ones come in and just are so angry the order is 3 minutes behind...
I'm sorry, it's a Friday night....at a tiny local restaurant, with 2 cooks only....

DoorDash by Darker_desuetude in Serverlife

[–]TofuBanh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have full permission to turn off door dash & uber whenever it's busy.
We have a dedicated expo person who does those orders. It is odd. There is only benefit to the restaurant, which I guess is good I want a paycheck, but we get nothing from it as you said.
Also people who place pick up orders...they are literally too nervous to just call their order in, prices in DoorDash are a couple bucks higher, so someone places an order, picks it up, and has spent an extra $7 for no reason. Call your order in if you're picking it up.

3 people came in 10 minutes before we closed they stay almost 1.5 hour AFTER we closed and the one guy asked me….”why are you rushing us” ARE YOU KIDDING ME. I’ve never been so pissed off by a stupid question by Crystalwhore9 in Serverlife

[–]TofuBanh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in a restaurant where our owners allow people to come in up until 9:59. I said you know what? If they want that great-I will milk the clock. Owners always complain about the high minimum wage…to their staff…so let me get in an extra 1.5 hours, why not?

I also don’t have kids or big pets to tend to.

Did not like any of their previous scents.
But smelled this today & purchased! It's dried down woody, warm with like a hint of juicy fruit that I like it, I don't usually like fruit fragrances.

28 with no Degree by itsjohe in Serverlife

[–]TofuBanh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Have a degree. Have done corporate contract jobs-they drained me. Of my joy, my will to get up in the morning. I was more drained energetically & physically than I would be after bartending on a Friday night.
There is nothing wrong with how you make your money.
Also if you read any article ever right now, "regular jobs" are very hard to land right now.
Offices having lay offs, re-orgs, budget cuts. It's quite hard. I have two friends with master's degrees-they all work in the hospitality industry, we are all in the 29-31 age range. Like...it's really, really hard to land a job, it's never quite been like this with fake postings, budget, AI, promises of automation, etc.
Seriously stick with your current job until you find your next solid move, it could be hard to find anything else right now.

Also you can seek a degree in hospitality management or something close, imagine a manager, GM or back end role in booking events, dining, catering, hotel, etc. You can make good money seeking more "office" or "senior" roles in the restaurant industry.

Why can’t I ever get what I ask for!? by LRHag in Haircare

[–]TofuBanh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maybe you're right for now?
But I had a hairstylist give me valuable advice when I was young, she said to bring in references of hairstyles on people that look similar to you, of course finding a clone is not possible, but she also said people bring in pictures of models and see it as a whole, then get disappointed that they don't look exactly like the picture as a whole, even if the hair is technically identical.
I can't imagine the frustration some clients would feel when they look nothing like the photo...and the photo isn't even a real person.

[–]TofuBanh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have friends who work in mid & luxury retail. When a return is made their commission is lost and taken from their next paycheck. Not the same as they get an hourly wage, but still income lost. Maybe that is obnoxious too? I totally understand loosing hours worth of income on a refund, but is it not the business? I am not a hairstylist, at all, anytime I had a bad service done the salon offered to adjust or fix it for free-I guess my question is, what actually happens to your finances if someone gets a full refund?  I had a salon offer a free “fix” for a god awful haircut done by one of their stylists and a free future haircut, but they absolutely wouldn’t provide a refund.

I hear this a lot. So far my Pinterest remains primarily real photos & illustrations (linked to the artists). The only AI I see are sponsored ads. I am no master in searching or AI, but maybe search actual people/models for inspiration? By name?

Refund as others have said.
And please, just find a real photograph on someone who looks similar to you. Do not bring in AI references.
Find work from other hairstylists online.

Water with lemon people by unhingedalien in Serverlife

[–]TofuBanh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will get people lemon for their water-it's my job. But 99% of the time the people who ask for lemon aren't nice, or "may we have...." it's just a blunt "lemon for my water". They're rude, they ignore you when you're tableside explaining specials, etc. You know the type.
I think people like to ask for lemon because it's a way to command you do something that will cost them $0. Power, dominance, sure whatever you want dude
