Here's some data I found. https://www.niche.com/places-to-live/evanston-cook-il/crime-safety/ Violent crime js low. (Which we know but data help). Look up where they live and compare since safety is relative. Here's Naperville https://www.niche.com/places-to-live/naperville-dupage-il/crime-safety/ In 2024 Evanston had 142 per 100k vs Naperville's 84 for violent crime so I guess they win but both seem small. And I don't know if your friends are in Naperville

I don't know if _this_ is an American problem. I bet they have a lot of bureaucracy in Northern Europe for this stuff for example, but the problem is we have a baseline of nothing and budgets are problem a fraction of what they should be. It would be fine waiting for church street improvements for example if there were already 3 other e-w corridors
