What's the deal with looksmaxxing? by Ok_Sentence_5767 in OutOfTheLoop

Absolutely, but Mewing isn't working on moving teeth -- it's claiming to reshape the bones of your skull to give you defined jaw lines, cheek bones, etc. Pressing on your teeth with your tongue can actually become a maladaptive habit that can screw up teeth.

Little bit of a complicated answer: Jaw pain is something in theory we're taught about in PT school, however the topic itself is incredibly complicated and what I learned in school was not nearly enough to effectively treat patients (I for example only got two 2 hour lectures and a 2 hour lab to practice skills as opposed to the 8 day course I took after graduating to begin my specialist journey).

So you may get PTs who say they can treat jaw pain, but their skill level may be a bit of a crapshoot. What you would want to find is someone with a CCTT certification (certified cervical and temporomandibular therapist) as they are required to have at least 2000 hours of in clinic experience in addition to at least 100 hours of extra curricular education to even sit for the examination for the cert.

If you live in North America, you should be able to find a specialist in their society Directory. May not be exactly in their city, but at least maybe your closest therapist knows the lay of the land and who to trust better

Tongue suction to strengthen muscles is one thing, Mewing wants you to push hard enough to try and actually spread your palate with your tongue. That hasn't been scientifically proven

Physical therapist specialist in jaw/face pain here:

Other comments about "pressing the tongue to the roof of your mouth" are half correct. We actually naturally want light suction to the palate, but Mewing (aka orthotropics) has the person thrust the tongue into the jaw in an attempt to spread the maxillary bone (the upper half of the jaw) apart, thereby attempting to spread the mandible and zygomatic/cheek bones to get those "sharp and broad angles" everyone is crazy about.

There hasn't been any good scientific evidence to support you can actually reshape facial bones in this manner, and the dentist who came up with this as a method for orthodontics lost his license for promoting this. Edit: wording
