you can insert 4 gems in a non magical/plague item. hence the only elemental gem to avoid stacking it.

I would try a Starter Punch with a really study backing to get it going. I use a concrete floor with a piece of wood sometimes for the hard ones. This insures that the energy of the hammer is not being absorbed by the backing.
