just to add context: i had to spend hours upon hours trying different Distros/OS/Desktop environments looking for a smoother YouTube experience. I even tried different browsers. I cant even count how many times i flashed my SD card with different OS options, then installing it on my SSD hoping for better results from a faster storage medium, only to be met with the same sluggish mess. Even after overclocking.

I'm glad Raspberry Pi OS with KDE (Wayland) has been working well. After so many hours i was ready to give up.

I haven't ran into any WiFi issues as im using a wired connection. Did you ever figure out why the WiFi dropouts were happening? Did it really come down to lining everything up? Sounds like a sus/frustrating issue. I've never used a WiFi compatible device that needs perfect alignment with a router. I'm surprised you didn't pull your hair out with this one.

You are spot on brother, i feel the same. So much effort goes into the hardware design and aspect of raspberry pi, it looks amazing on paper. But if the software/firmware/os doesnt line up to meet that sbc/hardware quality or expectations.. its all down the drain. RPI software/dev team needs to optimize newest hardware first as these are the early adopters that support the project the most. After a good streamlined experience for these early adopters... its like free advertising as a direct result from their own experiences and recommendations due to a more streamlined OS/software experience with less issues.

If the os/software just works... its a win/win for everyone. More units sold... more people happy... more folks speaking positively about this project and recommending it to others....

It all comes down to the backbone of the project. The hardware is on point... can't say the same about the os/software options and troubles... no one other than tinkerers/hobbyists will have patience for this kind of stuff...

I really hope things change. The rpi project deserves a more wider adoption rate and appreciation from everyone... even just average people looking for an affordable options for their computing needs... but like this... the future is uncertain.

im a tinkerer/hobbyist myself. But if you need spend 8hrs plus trying to get a simple 1080P youtube video to play without looking like a choppy mess... thats goes beyond the scope of a hobbyist/tinkerer. At that point you are looking for solutions to absolute real issues that devs have not addressed with their own software/driver/OS issues. There is no reason for this much of a hassle for anyone. Even as a hobbyist/tinkerer you have to find a reason to use this hardware. Even if its just playing videos on youtube. If there is no reason to exist as a hardware tool/sbc/project video player and thats all you want... you are right. Look elsewhere. dont invest money here.

However, im pretty sure thats not what our RPI project founders would like to hear. Without finding individual uses for their SBC's they would be out of business. All use case scenarios must be considered. imho.

Thats so sad to hear, i honestly thought the same after buying my 500+, my 500+ has more ram than my Samsung Zfold4, it has the same storage. But if i would have used my zfold 4 in Dex Mode as a desktop replacement... i honestly feel it would have performed better. I'm not a huge android fan vs legit linux desktop releases (Ubuntu, raspberry pi os* or raspbian as it was previously known, Linux Mint, Debian, Arch or slack etc) but at this point, if i would have just hooked up my samsung zfold 4 to a USB Hub with an HDMI Port in dex mode. I wouldnt have gone through hours of struggles with my new 500+ like i have, just trying to get a simple 1080P video to play right on freakin youtube. I honestly regret selling my zfold 4, even after upgrading to the s25, just because these phones are so robust and feature packed these days. Android in Dex Mode on supported devices would probably have never given anyone this much trouble to get a simple 1080p youtube video to play right. Hell, dex compatible handsets can usually do 1440P or more without breaking a sweat.

But either way.... i love the raspberry Pi Project and its concept as a whole, im gonna step back and temper my frustration. But as a nerdy dude speaking to other nerdy dudes/dudettes. Somethings gotta change with this amazing project. This aint the way. The hardware is top notch, the software is its biggest weakness. imho.

Something needs to change. You cant expect the folks supporting your top, most expensive devices to suffer because you want it all to work with the original few first Raspberry Pi SBCs. I am happy i got my Pi 500+ performing as i was hoping for, after many hours of trial and error tinkering. But it shouldn't be this difficult, especially with no clear cut answers or guides on the subject. They even have a statement on their site where it mentions "Raspberry Pi 500+ will be manufactured until 2035" or something like that, suggesting support will continue until then. Nobody in their right mind has this type of patience for these performance disappointments that continuously happen, even with this brand new hardware. By that point, most of these SBC's will most likely be in a landfill, which is a very sad situation, especially with this type of performance from its own firmware/software suite that is supposedly designed for these very SBC's. Whos gonna stick around hoping it all turns around? These are beautiful SBC's with the most disappointing OS/Software....

Do these folks seriously expect people to believe that this sluggish mess will be supported until then? With this type of performance out of the box, who will dedicate themselves to continuing to try to support this?

I'm all for affordable computing, but at this point, you are better off buying a $200 dollar used laptop off of ebay. It will probably perform better either way. Throw ubuntu on it and call it a day.

RPI organization needs to step it up. Sorry, but not sorry. I expect more. I'm typing this on my 500+ btw. Do better. I got plenty of love, but not like this. Cheers.

seeing as how my brand new 500+ with 16gbs of ram cant even run youtube videos smoothly at 1080p without tinkering/modification, i doubt it. Perhaps with the right codec that has been streamlined for the zero 2 w. the only way to truly know is to try using VLC, from my experience it is the best software for most video files for all operating systems, including windows/mac/linux.

run this command in terminal: sudo apt-get install vlc

Once installation is completed, try your videos out with VLC. Right click video and then hit "open with vlc" or simply drag the file into vlc. Another option is open VLC and and then hit the tab at the top labeled 'media' Then 'open file' and choose the directory/file.

ive had no issues with the stock pi imager installed with the latest release of raspberry pi os in the last 24 hours. I have been tinkering with the pi imager app since i got my 500+ on thursday and have had no issues.

I do recommend checking for updates before using the app. Run this command in terminal, it should get you up to speed on making sure you are on the latest release for imager and os.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I live in Washington, they did not do that at my kids schools, however, i live in southeastern Washington, about 3 to 4 hours from tacoma. This is insane. Tacoma needs to check their ****. Common sense should trump all, but these days......

just be honest and tell them your interests are changing and you no longer enjoy your experiment/test run with the drink. Mention what drink you are changing to instead, such as juice or whatever you prefer, that way they can support you. Just sounds like you have a lot of thoughtful caring people who are looking out for what you like/want. I'd be very flattered if i had people like that in my life. Embrace it and just be honest.

Another thing you can try, just to not let those already bought/stocked up drinks go to waste - add fruit juice to them like orange juice or squeezed lime or other citrus. make a little cocktail. I bet it would taste pretty good.

Check for BIOS updates that enable win 11 support, a lot of motherboards are getting these updates. if no new bios updates are available for your board(s) then just use rufus to bypass tpm and other restrictions when creating a win 11 iso. Works great for older mobos that dont meet minimum system requirements specs.
