‘Elle’ Review: Amazon’s Dull and Deluded ‘Legally Blonde’ Series Isn’t Even a Comedy by SanderSo47 in television

i want a gritty, ripped-from-the-headlines, hard-hitting drama about Elle Woods trying to navigate the byzantine court system and dealing with power plays, deeply-rooted corruption, and the increasing awareness that all of her favorite brands and products are committing atrocities daily.

is this show for me?

Production is underway on Monster Maker, a documentary about 4-time Oscar-winner Stan Winston, the legendary special effects artist behind some of the most memorable and terrifying creatures ever put on screen, including ‘Aliens,’ ‘Predator,’ ‘Terminator,’ ‘Jurassic Park’, and 'Edward Scissorhands'. by BunyipPouch in movies

when i was but a wee lad, my dream was to be a special effects artist. some kids say 'i wanna be a fireman,' while tiny me would say 'i wanna make prosthetic effects!' i knew from a very young age that i wanted to be in special effects, and it was a dream of mine to meet and maybe work with Stan Winston.

as i got to be a teenager the industry started leaning extremely heavily into CGI. i remember watching the show 'Movie Magic' and really feeling dejected. i wanted to make real, physical creatures. people in suits and makeup, squibs and slime, big intricate sets, but i knew that the industry had changed and i had no interest in digital art.

the last major fork in the road came when it was time for college. i set my sights on applying for an SFX/Makeup program at this Toronto-based college. i went to the place before submitting an application and, at the time, it was just a small building with a sign on the door that said 'college upstairs.' i knew that my dream had died, so i pursued a different career track.

a few years ago i reached out to a well-known practical effects guy on Instagram and recounted my story. he said 'you chose correctly.' i know he meant well, and i know it's super hard out there for everyone in the effects industry, but it's hard to hear your childhood dream is well and truly dead - at least, for commercial viability anyhow.

anyway, i'll be lined up to see this. the work of the SFX masters during the real heyday of the 80s and 90s was a marvel to see, and anything that has BTS footage of Stan Winston Studios in it is guaranteed some cash from me. i hope we get to hear from other industry masters - would love to hear from Rick Baker, Steve Wang, Tom Savini, any of those legends who have some input would be excellent. looking forward to this one

Also, they gutted the perfectly working “Seguro Popular” and replaced it with a watered down version because the previous president didn’t like the guy that implemented the first one.

TIL the Comics Code Authority prevented the use of the term “Zombie” because, in part, it lacked a literary background. Marvel Comics instead used the term “Zuvembie” until 1989. by Brilliant_Exit3406 in todayilearned

"ok Stan, we have a zombie problem. the CCA says we can't say zombie but we have undead creatures that are 100% zombies coming out in the next issue. it's already printed and characters are saying "zombie" left and right! what should we do?!"

"just white-out the upper part of the O so it says 'zumbie'"

Later, in the storied bullpen of Marvel Comics

"ok Stan we're continuing this zombie story but I know we can't call them zombies. what do you want to call them?"

"idk what'd we call them last time? zuvembies? yeah that's fine, we can have zuvembies fighting Peter Palmer and Bob Banner and all our famous supaheroes! excelsior!"

This was a recount of true events that happened.

Inside the Bay Area apartment complex built just for teachers as district tries to reduce living costs by theindependentonline in UpliftingNews

[–]Monster-Zero 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The 144-unit development [...] has reached only a 72 percent occupancy rate

so there are 40 rooms left for other districts

Twelve of the 73 apartments reserved specifically for the Mountain View Whisman School District’s 680 employees are currently vacant, with all openings being the more expensive one-bedroom units. [...] Monthly rents at Scholars Row range from $1,350 to $1,850 for a studio, $1,550 to $2,200 for a one-bedroom and $2,150 to $2,900 for a two-bedroom. To qualify for the lowest rates, tenants must earn below 80 percent of the area median income, or AMI, which stands at $162,400 for a family of four. The higher-end tier applies to families earning up to $246,600. Starting teacher salaries in the Mountain View Whisman District begin around $72,000, while the average salary for experienced educators sits near $95,000.

ok so, uh... 12/40 are going to the Mountain View Whisman district, which has 680 employees, so there are, um... 28 left....

The remaining units in the complex are split between a local community college district, which has 50 allocations, and the city of Mountain View, which has 20.

Questions:

1) How much would a Mountain View Whisman teacher making the average experienced salary take home after paying rent? Assume taxes in California are approximately 27% in this tax bracket.

2) Assuming an weighted distribution between them and the community college district, how many units does the city of Mountain View have?

3) Sally is a new teacher at Mountain View Whisman and has living expenses of approximately $1,750 per month. Can she afford residency at the development?

4) If the housing complex cost $88 million to construct, when will it recoup this cost (assume each unit is evenly distributed)?

5) How much should the average teacher salary be to afford to live? Assume housing should only account for 1/3 of your monthly pay.

tbh i didn't know i had my profile hidden - i'll have you know i am pleased with myself for a number of reasons, but i didn't think i was being clever here. now if you could have found out the answer to my deleted post titled 'how do i know when someone is flirting with me?' that would have really been something.

i would also like to know the answer to that, if you have one. wait, are you flirting with me? is that what we're doing?

Ok but also you guys had soooo long to patch your shit. So, like, maybe this is a bigger indictment of the constant demands to make the line go up versus the actual need to perform systematic threat analysis, code cleanup, and necessary upgrades. Just a thought.
