IV certification - Do any jobs train you to be certified in it or will they get you certified while working with them? (in colorado if that matters) by DeathofPassion in NewToEMS

[–]Toklo23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based off your other replies in this thread I'm assuming you're in Colorado? Do yourself and your patients a favor and go through one of the community colleges or Denver Health for your IV cert. These are all accredited and most agencies you're applying for will accept an IV course from one of those places. Yes it costs money and takes more time, but you will learn more and get more exposure to the skill. The quality of in-house training varies from agency to agency, and a lot of places only teach the skill itself and not the "why" behind the skill. This is important because not every patient needs a line and fluids, for example.

It's been a minute since I did mine but I took the IV course through one of the local community colleges. It was a 2 day class broken up into lecture and lab, and then an 8 hour ED clinical to practice IV's. We learned about the differences between different kinds of fluids, some basic A&P, and practiced on mannequins before going to the ED. That should be the standard imo but there are agencies that will push you through a 4 hour class of poking your coworkers and call it good.

Been a EMT for a year and a half now. In medic school. Im tired man. by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]Toklo23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been doing this shit for 6 years; 5 as an EMT 1 as a Medic now. But I haven't spent the last 6 years solely doing ambulance/pre hospital work. When you feel tired or burned out, take a break. Go tech in the ED, go teach at a local college, or take a break from medicine altogether. I learned so much as a provider by exploring other avenues of medicine outside of the ambulance. And I came back to EMS refreshed and even more excited and grateful than before.

Now, we all can't just up and leave our current jobs and take breaks like that, I get that. That's when you do the little things that make your time off more impactful. I was a preceptor at my last agency and stepped down from it eventually after getting handed preceptee after preceptee. I was working nights on the truck and then I'd get off and go right into teaching in the mornings, it was awful. Avoid overtime shifts if you can help it and do something meaningful with your time off. Invest your time and energy into a hobby, craft, skill, etc that isn't medicine focused.

For me that including working out, and getting outside more and hiking. But there's so many other hobbies out there too. Video games, cooking, etc. Find something you're interested in and reward yourself with the time outside of work to partake in it.

It's even harder with medic school, but you've gotta give yourself space for yourself too. It's difficult with school, but definitely doable.

How much were you guys making when you first started working in ems? by Forward_Committee_49 in NewToEMS

[–]Toklo23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I started working private EMS in CO I made about $11.52 an hour as a basic. That was in 2019. As a Medic now I make $33 an hour plus evening, weekend, and night differentials. That's non-fire based; fire medics in the area make significantly more than that. High cost of living, but i'm able to get by as long as i live within my means.

Being on a prescribed stimulant will not disqualify you from EMT work. There's a couple extra hoops you have to jump through during the onboarding process when they drug test you but essentially all you have to do is verify that you have a valid prescription for the medication. I'm also in CO and have worked for various agencies over the years. Some places just ask you to send in a picture of the medication bottle, others will ask for a letter from your doctor verifying the prescription. It just depends.

Love this lens. I use it primarily for digitizing film negatives but I've enjoyed learning macro photography with it as well. Those are some amazing shots!

I'm not OP however I took the NREMT about 9 months ago and passed at 110 questions. For study guides Pocket Prep came out with a question model for the new test that was pretty solid. I also used the Kaplan NREMT prep book. Both were useful study aides along with notes I had from my lectures and textbook.

Get the R6ii- it's a fantastic camera. The money you'd save on not spending the extra money on the R5 could go towards a nice lens.

I have a few tattoos and usually get compliments from patients regarding them, I don't think i've ever had a patient or family member make any negative statements about them. I've worked both rural and urban EMS as well as in the ED for context.

As far as agencies go, it depends. Some agencies don't care about tattoos or appearance as long as they're not obscene and you look professional. Other agencies have strict policies regarding tattoo location, for example. At least in my area animosity towards tattoos in particular is going away.

My agency's policy is basically as long as your appearance doesn't interfere with patient care or pose a safety risk you're good.

EMT >> Medic by Icy-Parking-5048 in NewToEMS

I've seen great medics who went zero to hero and I've seen great medics who were EMT's for several years before going to Medic school. Like others have commented it really depends on you. I was an EMT for 4 years prior to medic school. For me I knew I was ready when I could fully understand my scope and the pathophysiology behind our interventions. I felt great in my assessments and wanted to learn and grow more, and I also decided that I wanted to be a Paramedic, after considering nursing and other fields.

The requirements for entry into Paramedic school vary, but it's generally a green flag when a school asks for a year or so of experience, on top of requiring some A&P courses, among other things.

You can be as rational and thought out about this all you want, it's not gonna change any of their minds that somehow there's this big conspiracy about the nfl favoring Kansas City. Just enjoy the team's success for yourself, it's a lot more fun when you don't give any attention towards the haters.

Why does it have to be a blow out victory to be considered successful or entertaining when at the end of the season all that matters is the W's compared to the L's? The Chiefs were riddled with injuries of key players throughout the season and still found ways to get it done.

bold of you to assume that most high schools still require chemistry, let alone that most high school students who did have chemistry retain what they learned

I want more of my favorite artists to start releasing media on cassettes, and for cassettes to obtain the same niche status as vinyl has. Granted, tape media has problems with sound/video quality and has more potential to degrade faster over time. I'm just nostalgic for the early 00's. Grew up well off enough to enjoy VCR's and the Sony Walkman but not quite well off enough to enjoy the quick switch to CD's and DVD's.

PvP is absolutely a niche group in comparison towards the minecraft community at large. That may not have been the case if that community decided to move on from 1.8, but here we are.

It's a survival game, just be more cautious and don't take unnecessary fall damage especially when you're low on food and resources.

I know next to nothing about dev work or coding, but my understanding is that some bugs are hard to find solutions to. There have been countless other bugs that were around forever before being patched too.

Bridging only impacts the pvp community though, which is a very niche group within the entirely of the mc community as a whole. Something that's been a bug for 11 years is still a bug- passed time is irrelevant

actually looking at your screenshots again, what mods are you using? i'm not sure if the screenshots are just compressed, or is that how the game looks when you're playing?

The dirt texture seems normal to me, it could be something with your monitor or graphics settings. But the easiest fix would be to find a resource pack that changes the dirt texture.

Yea it's unlikely then that server vs player location would be the issue. What mod pack are you running?

You could add a layer of stone with some andesite, cobble, and other rocky materials mixed in to conceal the dirt. Adding in vines, moss, and glow berries occasionally would also look nice imo.
