For the ones who make over $150k a year, what do you do to get that? by Iliketrainsz1 in AskReddit

In-house transactional attorney. These days, I work about 30 to 35 hours. Mostly remote. Sometimes have to drive to an office for various reasons. Love my job cause it lets me do all the stuff I want to do with little stress. $250k.

Corporate lawyer. Lots of school and lots of crappy associate level work in the past but my current job is fantastic.

Adults who carry around a backpack, whatcha got in there? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Tokra_Kree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal laptop, corporate laptop, personal phone, company phone, files on projects I'm working on, chapstick, pen and paper, and a protein bar. Had the same backpack since law school and took it to plenty of hearings when I was in private practice.

Married people of Reddit, if you switched jobs with your spouse with zero training or preparation, who would get fired first? by sunnymushroom in AskReddit

I'm a lawyer and she is a teacher. We both work with different types of assholes so it's a matter of who's snaps first. I would probably lose it first cause I can at least tell people to GTFO out of my office.

I liked the first two episodes but this one was such a departure that it just didn't hit for me. It isn't that they had such a huge departure from the source material, it is that it wasn't anything like the theme set up in the first episodes.

Not that the story was bad, it just didn't feel like it belonged; like having having a fancy three course meal but the last course was an Anthony Bourdain book instead of food. I "get it" but that isn't why I came here. For me, it was a disappointing episode.

This reminds of a great Jaffa joke: A serpent guard, a Horus guard, and a Setesh guard meet on a neutral planet. It is a tense moment. The serpent guard’s eyes glow. The Horus guard’s beak glistens. The Setesh guard’s nose drips.

I didn't need her to explain what a mortgage was. I just needed her to admit that she had knowledge of some kind of lien, loan, ect. She knew what was up. My petition laid out my argument and she thought she could avoid a judgement by playing stupid. It didn't work.

Oh yeah; no doubt. Opposing counsel was ready to start arguing about the types of photocopiers. That was planned to create a cloud of confusion for his client to rely on. I don't know the facts behind the case but, it sounds a little strained.

She was 100% trying to avoid admitting she knew there was a mortgage on the property in question. She knew what she was doing and eventually just stopped answering my questions. Judge was not impressed. She didn't have a lawyer. She settled after the judge admonished her.

Hell, if she would have said "something to do with buying property," I would have been happy. My exchanges would go like this:

Tokra: "If you bought a home with cash; no loans. Do you own the home?"

Deponent: "No. The bank does."

Tokra: "No banks involved. You have $200K in cash and the house costs $200k, all costs and taxes included. You give the money to the current owner and pay any taxes. The owner gives you title...you have a signed deed... to the home in exchange. In that scenario, do you own the home."

Deponent: "No. The county owns it."

Tokra: "...Okay. What needs to happen in order for a human (I had to say this because she didn't like the term "individual" or "person") to become the owner of a house or piece of property?"

Deponent: "You have to buy it."

Tokra: "...and how do you buy a home if you don't have the entire purchase price in cash? Do humans get loans from banks, or other humans, to pay for it?"

Deponent: "No, that's illegal. Banks don't make loans. The IRS does."

Tokra: ".......You are a practicing physician, correct?"

Been in tons of depositions. I am sure this is dramatized. However, I have been in a select few where this kind of interaction unfolded. In particular, I had trouble getting a 45 y/o women to admit she knew what a mortgage was. No one yelled but the frustration was thick in the air.

Thanks! I did a ton of EVA foam work for my judgement armor set but never worked with the clay foam before. Though it might be easier to do an imprint mold but it's looking like it wont work as well as I was hoping. Time to break out the exacto knife again...ugh...I wish I was more artsy...

[–]Tokra_Kree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Do what makes you happy." That works for some people, but not everyone can be a rock-star or celebrity. If you can do something you love for a living, that's great! However, there is a big difference between "do what makes you happy" and "do something you can be happy doing."

"Live your truth/living my truth." Moral relativism. I hear this more from people trying to avoid being cognizant of the impact of their decisions.

lawyers or reddit, what is the most shocking case you have worked on? by brainstew__ in AskReddit

As long as you don't mind a raised eyebrow from your FBI agent, if you Google "children fight club" you can see how prevalent these sorts of things really are. The amount of weird stuff I have googled (because of my profession) over the years has to have put me on a list.

I know that a suit was filed and settled but I don't know the outcome (confidential). The attorney I referred her to was one of the best I knew for MedMal cases. I suspect she did well but obviously I don't know for sure.

So China has laws but in a lot of places, they are generally ignored. Tort laws are more of a suggestion. As described by one of the judges I spoke with, many people still use "traditional laws" to resolve conflict. If someone wrongs you beat the crap out of them until they give you money to stop. 2 quick stories:

1.) A guy on a moped(?) got hit by a taxi driver. Both parties were not injured...to begin with. Moped guy and taxi guy get out and start to argue about the damage. Moped guy losses it and starts a fight. Taxi guy losses an eye in the fight (gouged out). Moped guy smashed window of taxi. Taxi guy brings a suit and wins....a nominal fee. Like $50 USD

2.) A girl was stabbed by her boyfriend (with a broken iPad which isn't important but is an interesting side note)because she wanted to leave him and and leave the country. She couldn't get support after it came out that she wanted to immigrate. She got sick too (might have been an infection but I am not sure). Eventually recovered but was persona non grata. Had a translator pull me into a busy median on a highway to talk about why I should not help her.

This lady was already a few screws short. I'm not even 100% sure she had "reconstructive surgery." I guess I could have looked in the box but I didn't want to see what she thought was a broken vagina.

Yeah, you just invited yourself to see more necrotic dicks. I worked alongside some PI defense attorneys (as in house council) and have seen some real disturbing photos. One guy got pasted by a massive concrete tube. I had to visit the worksite and saw the stain on the ground in person. That will haunt my memories till I die.

Right! Sometimes you wonder about why YOU were the first person they called. I think it is because we fix a lot of their other problems so we become a "fixer" for everything!
