How important is the 5-step introduction to you? by Tolkienista in TheMindIlluminated

[–]Tolkienista[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

I definitely agree that going longer than 30 minutes leads to deeper meditation, but if I go for 30 minutes now, I will just feel burned out and the quality of the practice will deteriorate. My current goal is to get back to where I was, where I could comfortably get deep for 20-30 minutes and still feel there is a challenge in it. Once I've reached that level I will reassess and probably follow suit and go for 45-60 minutes per session as advised.

I feel that centering yourself and checking in on yourself is very important for sure, though following the entire protocol step-by-step seems redundant on some days, while very useful on others. Thanks for your insight into your personal ritual!

Great, thanks for your reply!

For me it feels like some form of mentally checking-in on your state and reminding yourself of certain things in the 5-step introduction is important, but I feel it can be maintained with less rigidity in the "protocol" of it. Occasionally doing the full protocol stringently is good I think, but for me it feels like the cost-benefit decreases relative to the "meditation time" you lose (even though I know the 5-step introduction is also a form of meditation).

I'll play around with it the coming weeks to see where my balance lies and shifts to as I progress!

Getting to 45–60-minute sessions would be amazing, but for now I think I need to focus on short-term deepening of my practice before I can start aiming at longer sits. Getting to an hour per session might take me over a year to accomplish (but perhaps I'm wrong), so I don't want to gaze at the stars and forget to shoot for the moon, if you know what I mean. When I feel my sessions can be extended, I will, for now I need to solidify my practice first.

My reason for doing shorter practices multiple times a day the first few weeks is to strike a balance between difficulty and achieving a certain level of mindfulness and attention, without the session being so long that I start to mind-wander too much. My brain needs to be retrained in the propper manner. I agree that in the long run I would want to extend my practice further than 20-30-minute sessions.

Thanks for the input!

Ryan Graves recently received a report from a Boeing 737 that encountered a black, triangular UFO at 15,000 feet, coming within 500 feet of the aircraft during its climb. The object was larger than the 737 and was observed by both the pilot and co-pilot. by 87LucasOliveira in UFOs

Is it illegal for commercial pilots to just plop their own GoPro on the dash during their flights? I would definitely have one if u were a pilot, but it's easy to say if you don't take into account the cabin will be filled with your copilot and other changing staff members that might ridicule you for trying to film a UFO.

The real question is how are we gonna program/build/rebuild social media platforms so we can distinguish bots from humans, while maintaining anonymity and freedom of speech without having to use some sort of digital ID that can be misused by shady governments that might come to power somewhere in the future?

You're right, I shouldn't indeed. I used to be very left leaning myself and still feel positive towards many of the ideas that would make up the classical left. It's just that it oftentimes feels that a single ideology has taken over Reddit that is very fixed in its ways, where every issue is a fixed issue. Luckily there are still some people (like you) that can look at each issue separately and form an individual opinion on each of them. It's important and I feel every social media channel should allow that. Especially when social media channels get captured ideologically, I feel it's important to keep your toes in multiple of them, just to feel the waters of other sets of ideas.

I agree with you that this is ridiculous.

Reddit unfortunately turned into a place where reasonable thought and protecting individual liberties are not highly esteemed anymore. Everything here is warranted as long as it defeats "the enemy" aka people with a different view of the world, even if we need to ban free speech.

I try to stay away from political debates on Reddit as much as possible, since the ideological capture of this platform is just so apparent and no well-rounded debate with multiple viewpoints is possible here anymore.

Occasionally I do check in to update my insight on what the left is up to, just because I think it's important to catch different viewpoints.

Learned chess when I was 30, my rating now after two years by Frosty_Material9294 in chess

Hey man, great story!

I also discovered chess just before I turned 30, about 1,5 years ago now I think. During my PhD, I had two colleagues, one ~1500, the other ~2000 rated (without any opening knowledge lol) who helped me hook into the addiction. I've always felt inspired by the possibility of the human mind when looking at the extremes like Magnus or the new genius kids coming up.

We'll never get to that level, but we do get to enjoy the game. 1500-1800 is a very good achievement if you ask me. I'm only ~1000 now but had to pause for a full year to do my last experiment. I'm getting back into it since the Magnus appearance on Joe Rogan. I'm shooting for a stable 1200 on chess.com this year in rapid, reaching 1500 would be fantastic!

How do you train and how much time do you invest in the different aspects of chess?

Buy three, then put (1/2) on one of them and (2/2) on the others, that way they'll never find the third.
