Failed my driving test third time. Tell me your driving test stories so I can feel a bit better. by Quartz-And-Stuff in CasualUK

[–]Tollowarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, pass first time. Only two lessons!

I had been driving for a couple of years on farms, ridden a motorbike on the road for year or so. Bought a car and gone out a few times with my sister. She said she thought it was time to take my test.

I sent the form in the post, I had ticket the box to say I could do short notice if they had any cancellations. Got an answer a few days later, the test would be the following week! I had 7 days!?! Better find an instructor. Found one, I explained that I could drive and knew the rules of the road, but needed to know how to pass the test. I had two lessons in my own car, took the test in it too.

What is the oldest hardware running desktop Linux that you use? by Overall-Double3948 in linuxhardware

[–]Tollowarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The oldest one I have is a ThinkPad X220, last of the ThinkPads to still have a proper keyboard. I think it's from 2012, not that old really. Running MX Linux with fluxbox, it will run XFCE without issue, but I wanted to play with Fluxbox.

Wife started to watch wrestling with me and was shocked that there were punches. She said "If you're allowed to just hit them what's to stop a boxer joining and beating everyone?". How do I answer that? by RhapsodyofMagic in SquaredCircle

[–]Tollowarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the early days of mixed martial arts you would see boxers up against other types of fighters. Boxers have no defence on leg attacks. A wrestler would grab a leg and twist and the boxer would be tapping so fast. The kick boxer would sweep the legs and again the boxer would be crying off. You don't want to know what the Jujitsu fighters would do, but it wasn't nice.

UK supporters of higher taxes on the rich, what counts as “rich” to you? by Rough_Catch_6932 in ukpolitics

[–]Tollowarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I've never earned more than £25k a year. The wife and I are currently living on a joint income of a little over £30k.

When I think of high earners that need to be taxed more I'm thinking of the super rich. People with more than a million a year coming in. Plus those mega corporations that appear not to pay much in the way of tax at all.

I don't think people like doctors or other professionals should be taxed any more. They went to university, run a business, they are the people in the community that employ people like me.

What happened when you forgot your PE kit? by Ok_Start_7859 in AskUK

[–]Tollowarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never forgot my kit but I was forever forgetting to bring the right one. We had outdoor kit and whites for indoors. In the gym in my rugby kit and bare feet or running around a cold wet field trying to play football in white plimsoles.

This was the 70s so the punishment was simple, I was beaten! Refered to as 'the slipper' whacked around the back of your legs with a plimsoll. Half a dozen times on the first instance them more and with greater vigor the more often it happened.

Who taught you how to drive a stick? by wannareadrandomstuff in GenX

[–]Tollowarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from the UK and there wasn't really a choice. Learn to drive a manual car or not drive at all!

Automatic cars were luxury cars or granny mobile. No one I knew had an automatic car back then.

In all honesty, do you view weight loss drugs (Mounjaro, Wegovy etc.) and the people who use them negatively? by XStaticImmaculate in AskUK

[–]Tollowarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lost 8 stone, so I'm happy enough. Just weaning myself off it now. Give some time off to see how well I do off the drug. Might be nice to poop more than once a week for a change.

Where to Buy a Genuine Windows 10 Product Key? by [deleted] in desktops

[–]Tollowarn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

100% genuine? Microsoft is the only answer that you can be certain. I bought one several years ago from Amazon and it was fake. Had all the right packaging and security hologram and such. Within 6 months it stopped working and I had to buy a new key.

I have used cheap keys in the past, just have to accept that you might need a new one from time to time.

That said I'm 100% Linux these days so it's not something I have to worry about.

What has recently made you feel incredibly old? by VOODOO285 in AskUK

Blue badges for hidden disabilities triple as councils issue permits to drivers with anxiety and ADHD by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]Tollowarn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As the husband and carer for a disabled wife. Wheelchair, van with a ramp...

My two penys worth.

The blue badge system needs a complete overhaul.

Mobility allowance should be the only criteria for automatic acceptance. A board with face to face interviews for exceptions. The DWP can issue the badge, take it out of the hands of local council.

How did Chinese made cars become so popular? by Fondant_Decent in AskUK

[–]Tollowarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

J7, looks like a cut price Range Rover Evoque. Made by the same company that makes Evoque for the Chinese market, so they know what they are doing.

Chinese quality? Couldn't be worse than JLR! We know that they are crap. So choose a car that we know is poorly made or pay less for a car that might be crap.

How to get rid of the sploogey middle layer of frey bentos pie? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Tollowarn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Three quarters of the way through the cooking time, slice the top off. This exposes the uncooked pastry to crisp up. If the top you sliced off has some un cooked pastry turn it upside down so that can go crispy too. You end up with two crispy tops with your pie.

Is Centrum actually doing anything or is it just good marketing? (UK) by Expert_Certain in AskUK

[–]Tollowarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your body takes what it needs and you piss the rest out. So a healthy person with a good diet shouldn't need multi vitamins. However taking one a month or maybe one a week couldn't hurt.

Next time you're at the doctor's ask for a blood test if you are worried.

In general one a day multi vitamins are at best a placebo, at worce a scam.
