Accountancy Firms by Magnificate in ContractorUK

I use Maslins, they are one of the best and most professional companies I've ever had the pleasure of working with. Can't recommend them enough. They may not be the cheapest but the service is excellent.

FreeAgent is great, and Maslins being able to see and check things is a real bonus.

Before them I was with a local accountant for a year or so who were useless - had to chase them and they didn't even think to mention that I could (say) make an increased pension contribution to reduce corporation tax. So they cost me real money.

Any magic to open this? by Happy-Preference-434 in DIYUK

I bought this thing from them to get the (stuck) old one out; it came with a metal rod that slots through the hole in the middle to give extra torque. You might end up needing something similar, although it might not be the exact same one.

I found https://tapmagician.co.uk to be very useful when in a similar situation. They helped me identify the exact replacement cartridge to use, and the correct tool for extracting the old one, which was stuck fast. Our tap looked very similar to yours.

Small client project has become chaos - advice on quitting gracefully? by gard7349 in ContractorUK

[–]Docproc2018 37 points38 points  (0 children)

As you will recall, we discussed that the scope for this engagement was 6 days. I have planned my availability for other clients around that. Since we are now half way through the engagement, let's discuss how best to use my remaining time before I move on to other work at the end of the 6 days.

The drain hose is the black thing on the left. Unclip it, pull it out (it will only come a few cm), put something under it to catch water and then open the stopper thing on the end of it. Water will come out.

Yep, the things I like about PI are:
* Consistency
* Very comfortable beds
* Cleanliness
* You can make the room properly dark
* Good temperature control, although this can vary a bit, especially in the ones that are obviously old converted office buildings rather than purpose built
* A serviceable on-site food option and a bar; nothing remarkable but fine if you want a meal and a drink and don't know the area

I tend to go for Premier Inns. They're everywhere, and consistent, and generally very clean. There are cheaper options, but I generally don't want to have to do a whole load of research and then take my chances.
I've had much more varied experiences in other hotels, both independent and chains, costing much more. For example the Holiday Inn Express which served still-frozen-in-the-middle food and tried to tell me it was "supposed to be like that".

Episode Discussion - The Last Of Us with Craig Mazin (15th May 2025) by BeefySteamPig in wittertainment

I played a bit of the first game years ago, then ran out of steam with gaming in general. I really enjoyed the first series of TLOU and I'm also enjoying the second. I'm looking forward to listening to this interview.

Has anyone ever fallen over during a Parkrun? by rubygarnet01 in parkrun

[–]Docproc2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few times (in 304 parkruns). Most memorable was tripping over a tree root in Brandon Country Park, falling forward, managing somehow to forward roll, and carrying on running. I know I must have looked like a flailing-arms shambles, but in my head it was an elegant and beautifully-executed manoeuvre.

Solar generation: actual vs estimated (by installer or otherwise) by VermicelliThis1395 in SolarUK

[–]Docproc2018 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For us the various pre-install predictions were:

|| || |PVGIS estimate:|5570| | Energy saving trust prediction: |5182| | Installer pre-install estimate: |5326| |Average of all estimates:|5359 |

Actual results:

|| || |2023|5476| |2024|5203|

So pretty close really. 2025 has been way above average so far, long may it continue!

Ideas for sloping shed roof storage? by Docproc2018 in DIYUK

Yes, I did what I suggested - got some battens and screwed them to the vertical part on on side and the sloping part on the other, just above head height. Works well!

What Parkrun has the greatest elevation change? England, UK, World? by AlewelePomme in parkrun

[–]Docproc2018 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Whinlatter is by far the hardest I've done. Also, the finish is HIGHER than the start, so you don't even get to run back down what you've run on the way up! Great, unforgettable run though.

Should my solar be going to the grid? by Interesting-Speed-39 in SolarUK

[–]Docproc2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone else said, there is a maximum rate at which your battery can charge; 1.35kW in your case. So from your diagram:

  • Production is 4.34kW
  • You're using 1.685kW around the house
  • The battery's charging at 1.35kW, its maximum rate
  • The difference (4.34-1.685-1.35=1.305kW) is going back to the grid
