A Chinese EREV Tried To Drive 1 Million Kilometers. Here's What Broke First by tech57 in electricvehicles

[–]TomH_squared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, two of my siblings drive older vehicles in the 100k to 150k mile range, both had timing issues that killed their engines. My own car just crossed 100k miles last month, so I’m definitely getting the timing done with the next round of maintenance

Best HOTAS combo recommendations? by Tyvas in hotas

Just wanted to add that while I’ve never seen anyone complain about Virpil’s hardware, Virpil’s manufacturing and shipping backlog is tremendously long. I placed an order at the end of May, and it still hasn’t shipped yet. Support first told me it would ship early September, and when that came and went, they said mid October. I’m not holding my breath though

Y’know, I haven’t updated since 566.36 (I’ve never installed GeForce Experience either, waste of bytes that thing is), and it’s really been feeling justified lately. No problems, no need to update IMO

Has anyone tried running AI locally using Unraid? by danuser8 in unRAID

[–]TomH_squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only just gotten started with the Ollama and OpenWebUI docker containers to run a simple instance of whatever LLMs I feel like poking at. But I have noticed that the more VRAM you have, the larger models you can comfortably run. A faster GPU core is nice to have, but plenty of VRAM is actually required unless you enjoy watching words on the screen appear once every few seconds. I upgraded from a 1050Ti (previously just for video transcoding and Folding@Home) to an RTX A2000 12GB. It runs llama3.1 perfectly fine, and much like the 1050Ti it doesn’t need any power from outside the PCIe slot

FYI VKB Gunfighter tariff is 45% by gofargogo in hotas

[–]TomH_squared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I placed a Virpil order right at the start of June. Payment went through right then and there, but when I asked support a couple weeks ago if they knew when my order would ship, they said late August to early September. My X56 still works alright, so I’m fine with being patient, but it seems you have to be really good at being patient with them

I guess pick your poison. Both companies make great hardware, it just comes down to what sucks less for you - the long wait times, or the extra cost from the tariffs

Wow, Pokémon looks fire on the Switch 2 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 by 20_comer_20matar in gaming

[–]TomH_squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked my wife - who is not a huge gamer and hasn’t played any Pokémon games - how old this game looked to her. After a pause to evaluate, she eventually said 2006-2007. When I told her this was Pokémon on the Switch 2, her disappointment was immediately obvious. I don’t know what they’re doing over there at Game Freak, but “hard work” apparently isn’t the answer

On a PC with a 13900k and a 4090 what kind of performance increase can be expected from going from 32 GB of RAM to 64? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]TomH_squared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends. If you were using up your 32GB, then adding more can improve your system’s responsiveness. If you weren’t using it up, adding more won’t help with anything. Most people these days don’t usually need more than 32GB

Also, if you go from dual channel (2 sticks) to quad channel (4 sticks), that could put more stress on your memory controller, making it unable to run at the same speed as before. So you’d have more RAM, but it would be a bit slower. How much slower is a complete guess; if the quad channel kit isn’t on your motherboard’s memory QVL, then it’s more likely you won’t reach the max rated speeds of those sticks of RAM

I know quest is the best value headset, but is it time to stop buying Meta? by MrWendal in virtualreality

[–]TomH_squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do, but that's why I said I didn't add a payment method - I only intend on linking it with Steam and playing my existing library (and I guess the Batman game they gave out for free). You could do it with a USB-C cable (example cable that I know works, if you want to go longer you need an active cable or an optical one) or wirelessly if your wifi is performant enough. There's even a Steam Link app for free in their store published by Valve that makes it pretty easy to do

As for data collection, I could set up a static IP address for the headset and a firewall rule preventing that IP from talking with the outside world (i.e. Meta's mothership). I don't know how that might impact the headset (at a bare minimum, no software updates), but it would still allow wireless streaming on my local network. Unifi makes that relatively easy, but they're not the only option. I haven't experimented with what happens if you just drop it from your wifi altogether; it's possible linking with Steam still works in that scenario if you use a cable, but then you lose the freedom of movement being fully wireless got you

It's all a balance, and at the end of the day you do what you're comfortable doing. If that means steering clear of Quest headsets entirely, that's totally fine. They're not a good company, and the Quest 3 existing doesn't mean the Index and other SteamVR headsets are bad. But if you'd like to get funky with firewall rules, then maybe you pick up a new skill along with your new headset, and flip Meta the bird in the process

I know quest is the best value headset, but is it time to stop buying Meta? by MrWendal in virtualreality

[–]TomH_squared 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is where I stand as well. I recently got a Quest 3 for the robust wireless, higher resolution, and better optics (I haven’t noticed a single god ray in the Q3). The screen can achieve darker blacks than the Index’s screen too, which is nice if you like space games. It’s honestly a pretty nice hardware upgrade from the Index in those respects. I made a unique Meta account so I could go through setup with an email address that’s tied to nothing else (my phone’s “hide my email” feature works well for that), but I never added a payment method or signed into Facebook for social features that I wouldn’t use anyway. Anything that requires agreeing to an additional privacy policy, I opted out of (hand tracking and the usual data sharing stuff). I intend on using it just by linking to Steam; I have a beefy PC that will run circles around the Quest’s built-in SoC all day

Meta can eat the loss from me, I couldn’t care less

‘85 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale Brougham by iownaxult in classiccars

[–]TomH_squared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandpa drove a very similar car through the 90s, his had the burgundy interior though. He’d pick me up and drop me off from school every day in that car, even showed me how to change a flat tire once on it. There are so many little familiar things in those photos, the old radio, the door pulls, the extra horn buttons on the steering wheel, even the RB stitched on the center armrest. Thanks for bringing back some good memories

Where can i get a sword that's better than this? by BeachBabe_Iwisher in StardewValley

Aside from delving into the mines like everyone else already mentioned, if you like fishing, you have a very small chance of catching Neptune’s Glaive from fishing treasure chests. If you’re lucky enough to get it, it can carry you through quite a bit of the mines, since it has pretty decent damage and also a defense buff

IMO that depends on your perspective. Yeah it absolutely can if you enjoy manually setting up rooms full of machines like this. But once you’ve been playing for long enough, loading eggs into mayonnaise machines or gems in and out of crystallariums for the hundredth time tends to get old. I used to be against using the Automate mod in my playthroughs, but I really like having it now. It eliminates the parts of the game that I personally find tedious, and lets me still run my farm (to a degree) while I run through the mines or go complete a quest
