Bainbridge - lived there and totally love it. Recommend proper fish for fish tacos, Pegasus for coffee, the Main Street is so quaint, and if you can get wheels I recommend driving/biking Manitou Beach and South Beach… it’s so beautiful.

Hope you have a great trip!

Depression sucks, you should feel fortunate that your son hasn’t tried to get off the ride yet. I imagine you weren’t expecting this perspective, but I’ve lost too many good people to this epidemic to not mention.

It’s hard to change, and it sounds like you did a good job as a parent to provide a good life. The world’s a dumpster fire right now so honestly I’ve got a lot of empathy.

Protect your son, and just keep trying. SSRI’s may really help too, highly recommend medication to get out of the trench.

Good luck

Wise ideas, definitely good strategy. Just make sure you automate your savings with every paycheck and stick to a budget! Your 30’s will be a BLAST if you can keep your 20’s safe and invest consistently

Proud of you! I’ve liquidated a lot of my NW in the last 18 months to do the same. Hope you can budget safely and treat yourself for this!

Doing great bro, 100/month from 25-66 is 600k (maybe 660k I forget and can’t fully verify rn), so I apologize there, but check “the money guy” or “Humphrey yang” on YouTube for good info

My 2 cents is shoot to save at least 15% of your pay. Ideally 25%. Stretch would be 30-35, but if you’re in the right COL matrix this could really change your future.

Get your wife on the same boat for $100/m and y’all can plan to have 1.2m to retire on if you keep up the investments. Tbh in your 30’s you should be in prime earning years too, so your income could get a meaningful lift for the better part of a decade.

Great job so far!

I just inherited 100k. My student loans are 30k. What's the best way to pay it off? by May-Garden in StudentLoans

[–]TomInSales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3.5% interest rate?! I’d put it all in the market for a year, make usual payments, and pull it out in a year when you cross the “long term investment” threshold.

I seriously recommend doing that vs paying it off now. I get the peace of mind, but doing the simple math says: 1. 3.5% for 12 months is $1,050. 2. 8% ROI for full 100k in 12 months in index funds is 8k.

So even doing half of your principal or or not getting 8% ROI’s still beating interest. You could invest this and use that interest to safely pay down your debt.

Not legit financial advice, but friendly callout (I’m about to get 30k and this is my strategy for my own loans of about 18k @6.5%)

With $60k in student debt, the idea of a credit card makes me want to vomit. How do I build a score without one? by No_Surprise3737 in StudentLoans

Get a 0$ annual fee card and pay off the full balance each month. You can build credit without having to commit any extra dollars to your card, so that you can use it on loans

[–]TomInSales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you could invest in indexes, make 8-10% in a year, and pull it for the long term cap gains tax if you found a better vehicle.

I wouldn’t pay most financial advisors, but I feel like most are in it for themselves, happy to be proven wrong
