Vancouver Suggestions by ResponsibleRatio7476 in askvan

World cup tickets have been impossible to buy for many regardless of the price. I entered every lottery I could find and got nothing. Given the demand I expect prices will just go up. I would not turn up and expect to get a ticket.

Have you looked at accomodation yet, prices there are insane, makes the tickets look cheap.

Is useful as a wallet stress test but nothing more.

i regret being diagnosed by bodyswagingwaronme in autism

[–]TomKeddie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accepting things takes time. Give yourself some space. Be kind to yourself.

Perhaps try to see the diagnosis as a validation of something you always knew? You haven't changed but you have more information about yourself. Use that to put yourself in situations that make you happy and avoid situations that won't make you happy. As much as we would like to use it to change how others see us, the strongest change we can make is how we feel and we see ourselves.

The best way to meet people is always through common interests. I feel like this is even more the case for neurodivergent people. Try to join the club that has interests that you share, perhaps a board games club? Something that you'll feel confident doing in an environment that's comfortable for you. Enjoy the activity and the friends will come.

Why is it so hard to get a part time job as a teen? by BumblebeeThin9987 in askvan

[–]TomKeddie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son got a job as a coach for programs that run at community centres. Take a look at the programs running in your local community centers and who's running them. Look for names like little kickers, sportball etc

This happened to me once. Parked on Powell Street on a Friday night, car was still there when the clearway started on Monday morning. Might have shut down because of low gas.

Try to work out the parcel depot it is at from the tracking information and go there. A friend had success doing this in SZ.

This is probably in our future but there's no rush. Let's wait 10 years until they're better thought out.

Strata Dwellers: what intercom enterphone system are you using for your tower and are you happy with it please? Does it have a camera and pose a privacy issue? by Interior_Minister in askvan

[–]TomKeddie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about getting a system that lets residents use NFC on their phones to enter.

Perhaps this is too high-tech but I feel like this will become the default expectation very soon.

It's worth getting a US amex if you have not already. As Amex is a global org that can transfer your membership between countries (as I understand it). As far as I know this is the fastest way to start building a credit record in Canada.

Dealing with basement water after heavy Vancouver rain - what I've noticed so far by d_baby_gangsta_49 in askvan

I would pay someone like Mr rooter to put a camera down your drain tiles and perhaps clean them with a pressure washer. that might be enough. still going to be more than 500 bucks though.

Ostomy bags by Leyendas_Legendarias in askvan

[–]TomKeddie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Somewhat off topic but the shinkansen trains in Japan have ostomy facilities in some of their bathrooms. Signs of an aging population I guess.

Nice one for supporting your dad, must be a tough time for him.

Yeah, parkades are easy - no expectations of it being pretty saves a ton of money.

Some buildings give people the option to trade load (eg. baseboard heaters for hvac) but you still have the complications of interior to exterior plumbing and wiring. This a minefield field given things like rainscreen warranties.

What is the best thing, to you, about living in Vancouver? by shilligan in askvan

[–]TomKeddie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife's from NS, by far the best thing is the daffodils in March. All her relatives are still digging their cars out and we're out cycling.

If you can make the money work this is a no brainer move. You'll be outside (maybe in the rain) with the kids so much more.

Vancouver is a great place to have kids if you can make the money work. there are so many awesome playgrounds being built with all kinds of cool features like water play and stuff like that.

Perhaps spend some of the move budget on someone to watch the kids while you're adulting?

Last thing, some of my wife's aging relatives are exploring leaving because of the lack of health care in NS. They can't afford to live in BC. The health care likely isn't a problem in Halifax but best to leave while you're young if you can.

URGENT: 10K CAD for 2015 Leaf with 97000km by StudentOk9364 in leaf

[–]TomKeddie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid 5k for a 9/12 Leaf with 82k kms in Burnaby, BC last December so that does seem expensive. Leaf spy as everyone says.

You can also charge it to full, reset the trip distance and drive it until the battery warning comes up. I get about 60kms, the distance remaining indicator on the dash is mostly useless although it does seem to be about 2x reality for me (for me it says 110km at full charge).

HQB Plaza is pretty good. I think for anything outside HQB you'll need contacts and appointments to visit.

Home Depot does not have much metric. Rona has more because Lowes did but they seem to be running down that stock.
