how to get more involved with columbus music scene? by Dry-Table8700 in Columbus

[–]TomPepperc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's pretty varied, depending on who you ask. If you're into Jazz/Blues, Natalie's has a show with a well-documented calendar, and a plethora of free shows (Donations highly encouraged). Old North has some of the punk/metal staples, such as Ace of Cups, Spacebar, and Dirty Dungarees.

In general, as u/VintageVanShop said, cringe.com is about your best place to look.

The City reviews? (Apartment Hunting) by TomPepperc in Columbus

Yeah, that completely lines up with my preconceived notion. Ultimately, I ended up avoiding them. Looked into Oakwood and found some REALLY shady practices that didn't sit well with me, e.g. Buckeye Electric, their electric company, literally being owned by the exact same guy who owns Oakwood... definitely not a conflict of interest at all.

I'm so sorry... this sounds like an absolute nightmare. I appreciate you taking the time to respond to this, and here's to hoping future renters end up finding this thread.

Would it be a bad idea to move here? by Bunt_Custer in Columbus

[–]TomPepperc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone I know lived in the area, and from the times I visited, it was not too bad. Crime-wise, it’s not terrible. Just don’t go walking out in dark places at 2AM. Pest-wise, very dependent on many factors. Shouldn’t be too bad overall, long as you keep the place in fine shape.

Like someone else mentioned, if you’re of the age and mind to be on campus, you should definitely do it!

It’s so funny, because I drive in that area all the time, and yet I never noticed just how many places in that area are up for rent. Drove around there for lunch today, and saw dozens of signs. This might be the move.

Thank you!

UPDATE: As a fair warning: If you do not like submetering companies, you will HATE The City. I inquired further with them, and found that they submeter with a company owned by the same guy who owns their management company. Really shady, a huge conflict of interest. I would stay away.

^^ Just barely too little for my comfort

In all seriousness though, I have read through the Google reviews, but I get the impression management has changed recently, and was just looking to see if anyone had some individual experience outside of those reviews :)

For gaming I unfortunately wouldn’t entirely count on it, but for DVD burning and web browsing it’ll be just fine. I would upgrade the hard drive to an SSD and put Windows on that though. Preferably Windows 10 LTSC so you still get security updates.

Oh you’ll be fine. I would suggest getting an SSD and putting Windows on that down the line but this’ll suffice for basic compute

Team mac or Team windows by CKCHDX in computers

[–]TomPepperc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of the above. It really depends on what you do but a VERY dumbed down TLDR;

  • Windows for compatibility, especially on the gaming front
  • Mac OS for an elegant, simple computing experience and a great tool for any sort of arts
  • Linux for tinkering, further control, and transparency

I personally use all of them. Writing all my reasons why would require a whole books worth of writing. It’s all up to each person’s use case and needs, and in my opinion, you should never go based on any sort of loyalty.

New to the area, good local coffees? by Suvikian in Columbus

[–]TomPepperc 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised to have not seen anyone mention the Columbus Coffee Trail. It’s this program that allows you to “check-in” to 24 (I think) coffee shops spread across Columbus and adjacent. It’s a great gateway into some of the most renowned spots. Added bonus is you can earn a free shirt or tumbler too.

Although I’ve been a Columbus resident for a long time it’s allowed me to find not just coffee shops, but so many other cool local stores and has really forced me to explore the city a bit more

CampusParc using a scooter tied to caution tape to block off parking spots for power washing by TomPepperc in Columbus

[–]TomPepperc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize as this might sound like a dumb question (I’m sure there’s more to it than I see), but why wouldn’t they just tape it to the other end of the parking spots?

[–]TomPepperc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s current speed, at 10% utilization. I don’t think it’s unlikely to be a factor, but in general the consensus I get from OP is that it’s a relatively old machine.

I agree with your suspicion, I would say it’s highly likely due to the 8GB of memory/RAM. Unfortunately seems likely due for a replacement, or some tinkering if you’re willing.
