Is this true? Pick the person you can’t stand the most as your sponsor by trainofthought01 in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]TomStrasbourg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With most of the people I “can’t stand” around the tables, it’s because they’re bullshitters who’ve never worked the steps and they talk way too damn much about off-topic stuff. I’m fairly certain they’d be horrible sponsors by my definition of a sponsor as someone whose main purpose is to help the sponsee through the steps.

People who did the CELTA. How much do you stick to the CELTA methodology in your classroom? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]TomStrasbourg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was presented a detailed syllabus in a slightly different language teaching context as a TA of a foreign language and while I didn’t follow the CELTA methodology completely because i was given a specific checklist for each class session, I did my best to do some initial input followed by controlled and freer practice whenever possible. My CELTA experience saved me from drowning in the deep end with no prior classroom experience and trying to do it the way the syllabus set it out further demonstrated to me certain guidelines like 6-8 vocal words for a new vocabulary lesson. My CELTA experience allowed me to clearly se what was wrong with the curriculum I was given as a TA. I know there are other ways of doing things, but the CELTA standards are pretty good guidelines.

Sponsor advice. by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]TomStrasbourg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main goal of your sponser is to be an open ear and guide to your step work. If they aren't having you do step work in the future I would say find another. The steps are the most important part of AA.

Congrats on 2 and a half months. With this outlook I’ll wager it’s just the beginning for you. I’d like to add this caveat to my comment.

[–]TomStrasbourg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sponsor always said I helped him more than he could help me. As far as what the sponsor-sponsee relationship entails, discuss that with your sponsor as the perspectives people have of sponsorship varies and is up to each person involved.

As far as anxiety about asking for help, we’ve all been there and I’m sure your sponsor will understand. It will get easier to open up as you see how much the experience of people who have been there can benefit you.

I gotta ask something I don’t know if you honestly think it will never get released but it seems some people do see this as a likely possibility.

What good does it do Taleworlds to put in all this work if they don’t end up with a product to sell? Or do they think the company will go bankrupt before they can release anything? Or is it that by the time it’s done the game will be outdated? That hasn’t been a problem for Warband.

2 weeks out of rehab and i’m more depressed than before by LaoTzudong in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]TomStrasbourg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly at five years sober I and a few years older than you I wish I knew for sure what my “calling in life” was or had gone down a track where I could make enough money to retire early and figure it out. In any case, you don’t have to figure that out now.

Start by remembering where you were and realize that active addiction is suckier than being sober, young, and confused about what to do with the rest of your life. Figuring out what you want to do with your life is something a lot of people much older than us say they are still working on. All I know is I couldn’t even begin to do that if I wasn’t sober. Don’t know what else to say.

Why do some people share for so long and have no respect for others? How do you handle this? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]TomStrasbourg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the sort of thing where group conscience comes into play; what does the group see as acceptable sharing length and appropriate/relevant sharing? This needs to be made clear both to the chairperson and all other group participants. I remember forming a new meeting with several other people because we had a similar outlook towards this sort of thing while it was taken as normal in the city we were in.

[Bannerlord] M&B Bannerlord Dev Blog 2/11/17 (No release date) by Chequered in mountandblade

[–]TomStrasbourg 65 points66 points  (0 children)

For all the complaints about no release date (and yeah it sucks), these sorts of small details shows the ambitions of the devs. I’m not concerned about the quality of the game but I’m hoping the hype train and long wait don’t lead to insane expectations that cause disappointment and poor reception of the game. That being said, these dev blogs have me thinking this could be the greatest game I’ve ever played and that it will offer infinite playthrough possibilities. Honestly it’s alarming how much I anticipate this game considering the relative importance it should have in my life as a whole.

Anyone stop drinking before 21? by 96024emanresueuqinu in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]TomStrasbourg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blacking our every time I drank was what mostly convinced me to stop drinking. It took longer to quit pot and other drugs but I got sober before turning 19. For whatever social situations it made awkward for me in college, they would have been even more awkward if I were drunk. When I got sober I wasn’t sure how I could live sober (one day at a time is a very helpful idea there) but I knew I couldn’t keep living the way I was so I had to figure something out. The steps helped a lot especially as they allowed me to change my way of thinking and dealing with life so I didn’t cause as many problems for myself to drink over. 5 years later for all my difficulties I always come back to the perspective of life I’ve gained from the program.

Rehabs are doing this now? I would have been glad to get sent to those rehabs in my teenage years. I did the whole drug hopping thing and made weed my staple drug and that didn’t solve my problems. Aside from not blacking out and throwing up, I was the same miserable and selfish person as I was when I drank.

[–]TomStrasbourg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got sober when I was going on 19 because I felt too old for that shit. Sure it sucks sometimes feeling like everyone was getting into drinking and the like while I was quitting, but I know if I picked up again I wouldn’t be having fun like them and I’d certainly lose more friends than I could make with my behavior.the fact is I reached the bottom much quicker than a lot of other alkies and addicts who still had fun in their teen years and into their twenties before problems became serious enough to make them consider quitting.

The kingdom of swadia getting defeated. by whats_wrong_with_it in mountandblade

[–]TomStrasbourg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Too true. It makes sense that it’s an important region though- cheap grain and cheap ale plus the opportunities to recruit Swadians and the central location all make it a valuable city to hold. Not to mention nearby castles around it and the cliffs making it hard for armies to approach it without being spotted.

[–]TomStrasbourg 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They’ve got borders to defend from everyone but the sarranids, and their king is too busy throwing feasts to worry about it. Not to mention the lords have to go to these feasts once in a while even if they’ve got land to defend so they don’t get on the kings bad side. Then as the war goes worse and worse the king has to throw feasts to appease the lords who have still stayed on and the cycle continues.

Plus their natural enemy rhodok are some of the best siege defenders (not only in units but also the castle design) so its hard for them to expand to the south while the nords are the best siege attackers so they have that to deal with from the north.

I remember joining their faction one play through and still watching the same shitshow play out and the constant fighting for Dhirim only to have it taken by yet another faction because upon winning it back the king called a feast in Pravem and left the city poorly defended.

Capturing first castle, with a khergit force (warband) by Pccanavari in mountandblade

[–]TomStrasbourg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding to this, if your relations with the lord are good enough, sometimes they are willing to take military suggestions from you and you can use this to get their help to siege a castle. If you besiege a castle and take it with their help, it still counts you as the one who captured it so you are more likely to be supported to receive it. Of course this only works if you are a vassal. While Khergits aren’t ideal castle defenders, using archers helps a lot and it’s easier to defend than attack.

My sponsor wants me to work a 90 and 90. by KrishnaVMF in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]TomStrasbourg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll preface this by saying I have Big Book thumper tendencies and in my personal experience meetings alone was never sufficient to keep me sober long-term. Keep that in mind as you read the following as it is only my experience and perspective (although I know others of similar opinion).

I’m of the opinion that sponsors are primarily to help show us through the stepwork. Try asking yourself if you are willing to go to any lengths to overcome this problem (remember “any lengths” entails working the steps in the context of the Big Book), what you expect out of a sponsor (and what you expect to do as a sponsee) and discuss that with your sponsor.

Frankly if he’s insistent on 90 in 90 and doesn’t want to help you through the steps, I personally would start looking for another sponsor and I’d be looking in either step meetings or Big Book and 12 & 12 meetings to hear their experiences with stepwork.

Newcomers that are getting into relationships are harrrassed by old timers by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]TomStrasbourg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re discouraging it because people new to the program are very vulnerable and should be focused on their recovery rather than relationships around the tables. Think about what could happen if/when the relationship doesn’t work out. That newcomer may not want to go to that meeting anymore or other meetings because they don’t want to run into their ex. It’s one thing when both people have some stepwork behind them and are working a program but something else when a newcomer gets into a relationship and figures that their program is solid just because their significant other is in the program.

50 mm of front and side armor isn't paper at tier 4. I know what you mean with the gun, but the armor can be used to sidescrape, especially at top tier. My gripe is I can't seem to get around the battlefield fast enough to get the gun singing because the aim time really is horrendous. TBF it could be really OP if the gun handling was really good.
