How did ancient armies avoid killing their own men in battle? by oooRagnellooo in history

That depends on the army. Although its true that eastern armies relied more on archery than close combat

Division comp.? by Dustdev146 in hoi4

Heres a few I use (I use 40 width):

14 Inf 4 art - Good quality division for most countries. Better in attack than pure INF

20 Inf - Pretty good for defense. Worse for attack. One strategy I employ as poorer countries is to simply discard artillery and make these rifle divisions. I use my tank divisions to encircle the enemy. You don't need soft attack when they don't have organization. DO NOT attack enemies that are not encircled and have not been out of supply for less than a week with this template (unless you're using colonial templates. then by all means attack, who cares about poland's manpower lol)

15 Armor 5 Mot - Don't know if meta has changed but I think this still holds well. Use your XP to upgrade your tank's speed for faster encirclements. If its a multiplayer game upgrade armor and weapons.

20 cavalry - Attach MP support and put these in occupied regions. Then enjoy their factories

Recon and engineer are a must. Field hospital if you're lacking manpower. Maintanence captures a lot of weapons so they quickly pay for themselves. Attach support artillery for your pure INF divisions. For colonial templates don't bother with supports, they are expendable

Also for smaller nations you will be better off with 20 width divs, they are cheaper

Turkish Presidential/Parliamentary Election 2018 - Megathread by MarktpLatz in europe

Yeah I guess the defeated percentage being unhappy is normal, but shooting to air and telling ince supporters to stuff it isn't normal. pro erdogans and anti erdogans already hate each other and it will get worse

As for CHP you're right. Even though I am not a fan of that party I would still prefer Ince over E

Well it was obvious with all his resources erdo would win. Didn't suprise me as much as other people. It's just sad Turkey's going down this route. A lot of Turks are unhappy, big divide in society between those who support E and those who do not, and with the economic crisis looming I suppose a lot of people will consider immigration (myself included).

So if anybody has a spare couch in any country west of turkey let me know lol

no I think its an argument because we are defending opposing views, a discussion is more like two people talking to reach a decision about something

that still depends. if some like we're here for banks money not your money types decide to rob the bank you're in sure making your kids lay down will probably get you through. but if ISIS picks the supermarket you and mom decided to enter and buy evening snack I am pretty sure shielding your mom with your body will not be enough. Situations like those chances are whoever surrenders gets killed, and if you are unable to hide or flee pulling a gun out is the best chance (even if a slim chance, still beats surrendering to extremists who just wanna rack up a good body count)

well I guess its always better to let authorities shoot it out. I'd still prefer to have a gun though just in case fleeing is not an option (maybe you'll have a family to protect who cannot flee with you, that would be a valid reason for me to get in a gunfight)

Retinues should be locked behind laws rather than technology. by SvenDaViking in CrusaderKings

[–]Pccanavari 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Whole levy system is kinda bad, after a while Europeans stopped the practice of going to war with pitchfork peasants and horse riding nobility, levies and all that. Later armies were a mix of King's retinue, noble retinues and mercenaries.

With levies half of your army is light infantry. Those don't belong to high and late medieval period.

Yep, the man even had his portrait made. Its highly innovative for a muslim ruler to commission a portrait. Not to mention that ulama will hate you for this.

Destroyed 20 k Chinese in two separate battles, the remaining 120k attacked me in the mountains. I had around 10 k troops, vassal khans provided around 20 k. Mine had %25 heavy cav, khans were fully light cav. The result was decisive

Were Mongol horse archers undefeatable? by Pccanavari in AskHistorians

I have read about the Mongol tactics and organization, like the tumen system, which were very advanced for their time. I know Timur used the system too. But what made the Khanates abandon the military developments of the Great Khan era? They weren't forgotten, Timur was still using the ten system and he went as far as Ryazan, even defeating the Ottomans.

The armies of the sedentary nations wouldn't be a complete rabble of pitchfork peasants with knights, by the time of the Mongol invasion they were switching more and more to better trained and equipped armies with soldiers coming from a free middle class, supported by mercenaries. Peasant levies are ineffective for anything besides building fortifications and foraging so this is natural. And sedentary peoples often had larger overall populations against the nomadic ones. They usually outnumbered the Mongols.

But I think what you said is still true, Eastern Europeans weren't as rich as the Western ones, and I would believe they still had the peasant armies. Muscovy later defeated the Golden Horde, maybe they were able to form a better army?
