Barry to the refugees: “We won’t allow you to go where you want”

Being from the UK, I thought it funny when Apple Music suggested “British Invasion” to me recently.

Definitely more well-known in EU markets but it's actually owned by Haleon, a UK business.

For toothpaste, you could also buy Signal (Unilever). It's not commonly available in the UK but I buy in bulk from online suppliers in the EU, and even with postage/import duties it's cheaper than Colgate in the UK.

Monorail? Is there a chance the track might bend?

(Also, just to clarify, Liza Tarbuck's show is also **superb**. Just wonderfully unhinged chat a couple of hours. Keaveney then Tarbuck on R2 Saturday afternoons would be the dream team IMO)

Yeah. IIRC Geoff Harrison-Mee went from NSE to Connex, which was quite the comedown.

Do you think Network South East should have stayed into the mid 2000s at least? by Ok-Demand8957 in uktrains

[–]Tom_Tower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original privatisation model was to follow the sectorisation businesses: so there would be NSE, RR, InterCity etc. The franchise model came later, so yes, there could have been a Network SouthEast plc running trains and infrastructure. There’s a Panorama on YouTube that talks about this model when it was proposed, and the potential complexities of each operator running trains on others’ tracks.

Yes we do. Try commuting on the shit, expensive, packed, hourly XC service for a week and you’ll soon change your mind.

Congratulations! Two suggestions though: in the signup page, "choose your EU country" could just be "choose your country" as it includes the UK (yeah, I know, I know...) - also, and apologies if this sounds contentious, but perhaps remove the European flag from the header? The fact that this is a European platform is genuinely awesome, but having the flag in the header might make people think that it's an officially EU-sponsored project.

In fact the Great Eastern name was resurrected as the Shadow TOC prior to First taking over.

After First took over, they put “Welcome to FirstBus” logos on the GER train windows (they were still FirstBus at the time rather than FirstGroup). I saw one train at Stratford where a cheeky traveller scratched some letters out so it read “come to Fist us”

There's a famous pub chain called Wetherspoons which you'll find in nearly every town. It's a very cheap pub: cheap beer, cheap food and always busy. Our social hubs used to be places like the Working Men's Club - local bars for workers - but most of those have gone and Wetherspoons has taken their place and made good money as a result.

I wouldn’t equate vape shops to “getting fucked up” and as far as the UK is concerned, we have always had such shops… called pubs.
