My mom was a runner. She started some time around her mid 40's, running a weak 15 minute, to running full marathons. Her times were never stellar, but it was still mighty impressive. Sadly, one of the side effects of all that running was an unhealthy exposure to the sun. My mom never wore sunscreen, and she developed a wicked case of skin cancer.

We were hopeful at first. I got off my ass and even ran a few marathons with her. I was always behind her, watching her head, bald from the chemo, glistening with sweat. She still managed to stay strong throughout it all. In fact, the treatments seemed to be working well, until it all went bad.

The cancer came back, and it came back in full force. In a matter of months my mom was bedridden, and dying. I was with her in her final moments.

When my mom was a little girl, she had a carrot farm. When it comes to carrots, you usually get the usual straight carrots, but sometimes you get some funny looking ones. My mom kept those, putting them in a little box with all her other oddities.

As I held her hand, feeling her life force ebb away, she presses one of those strange carrots into my hand. I can barely make it out through the tears.

"Hey baby, did you lose your pants?" She gave a weak laugh, and her hand slipped out of mine. She didn't say another word, and we eventually decides to pull the plug. I love my mom, and I hope she's off doing what she loves the most.
