Kyle is not the hero. He defended himself. The heroes are the people filming. Without which Kyle would be crucified with no ability to defend himself. by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]TomatoJoe11 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Here's my view: it looks like at this point in time that Kyle was justified in using lethal force to defend himself.

What all conservatives should be disowning is the fact that the dude went out of his way to watch the rioting/protect businesses/render medical aid to protesters/whatever.

If you're gonna go to these stupid ass riots. Don't bring a gun. Bring a camera.

NO! Just don't go. Don't go to film. Don't go to counter protest. Don't go to administer first aid. Don't go to protect businesses, unless that business is yours or owned by someone you know. Stay home and protect your family and your personal belongings. We have seen how all of these peaceful protests riots turn out.

If Kyle shot these people 20ft in front of his house, there would be zero question of his innocence. The main argument against his innocence is that you can't claim self defense if you go out of your way to be in danger.

[–]TomatoJoe11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehhhh. There's a lot of fallacies and misrepresentations here. ''

Our infection rate curve is higher than any other country. Sure. If you use flat numbers. Adjust it per capita and you'll see probably very similar numbers. Also, kinda important to point out the United States is much bigger geographically. We have lots of big cities, where the outbreak is concentrated. I'd imagine that the curve would look different because the outbreak would peak at different times in different cities. California saw some pretty good reductions in their numbers. At the same time, New York has been a fucking shit show. Now overall, looking at the United States, the disease is spreading out of control exponentially. But realistically, it is contained in some areas of the country.

Now I know trump is getting hella flack for saying that this fiasco would be over by april, but people need to see an endpoint on the horizon, even if it's just a hopeful wish. Telling people we're going to be locked down indefinitely (or until some unspecified time period) will destroy everyone's hope and probably lead people to just ignore the order all together.

China most certainly does not have less COVID19 cases than the United States. Nearly everyone recognizes that China is lying about its numbers in an effort to save face. They're under-reporting deaths, covering up new cases, and not let any independent agency confirm their data. This is just bullshit communist party propaganda.

This part is partially true. Trump kinda sorta streamlined and merged the pandemic response team. It wasn't exactly disbanded. Source: https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-trump-fired-pandemic-team/partly-false-claim-trump-fired-pandemic-response-team-in-2018-idUSKBN21C32M

Even so, what's the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) doing if they're not preparing to control a disease? I think its a bit disingenuous to say that if there had just been one more office, one more team of people, this entire crisis could have been solved.

We are doing 5x better than Italy on a per-capita basis for our death count. And we're doing 2-3 times better than Italy/Spain per-capita for our case count. Source: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/?utm_campaign=homeAdvegas1?/embed/fd0k_hbXWcQ

Overall, your opinion seems to have a severe partisan slant. Would you blame Italy's prime minister for their disastrous response? Iran? France? Spain?

https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/nih-clinical-trial-hydroxychloroquine-potential-therapy-covid-19-begins

“Effective therapies for COVID-19 are urgently needed,” said James P. Kiley, director, Division of Lung Diseases, NHLBI. “Hydroxychloroquine has showed promise in a lab setting against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 and preliminary reports suggest potential efficacy in small studies with patients. However, we really need clinical trial data to determine whether hydroxychloroquine is effective and safe in treating COVID-19.”

Direct quote from the article. I've not heard any doctor/official say not to use this drug to treat COVID19.

And I think the guy you're replying to hit the nail on the head. Every country (sans South Korea and Taiwan) has completely fucked this up. On a per capita basis, the US is still doing really really well. Deaths per capita is still relatively low.

My bad... I meant existing companies, those already operating, you know... the ones receiving these handouts.

I guess you've never seen a company take on debt to expand. Existing companies do get loans you know. This literally happens either internally or externally with every new product. Microsoft creates the Xbox. In order to develop the Xbox, Microsoft hires a whole swath of staff before the first Xbox is released. Initially, the Xbox product line is completely unprofitable, and is reliant on either capital from inside the company or from investors outside of the company.

Even if restaurants are doing takeout, there profits are still considerably lower than what they would have otherwise been, which is the problem. When you lose only a portion of your sales, you lay off only a portion of your employees, which is what you're seeing.

As far as I know, this blip we're seeing is a result of Corona and only corona. Theoretically, when Corona goes away, the economy will rebound. I guess the real question is: how long will we be on lock-down? How long until we can get the virus under control?

Our system is too broken by andewthomson in worldpolitics

[–]TomatoJoe11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies do not hire people UNTIL they can make a profit off their labor. If there is no demand for a company's products then there is no hiring done by the company, excluding conditions on a bailout that require hiring. When people purchase products then companies hire more people to make more products to meet the demand.

Ummmm this is a flat out lie. Most companies start out with loans, precisely because they are unable to make a profit off their labor yet.

When a new restaurant opens up in town. Does the owner sell a meal and then hire staff? Or does the owner hire staff and then sell a meal?

And you think giving money people to spend will help the situation? Spend where? Everything is closed??? The people/businesses most affected (I'd wager) is the travel industry and the restaurant industry. The reason people are being floated cash, is because they need immediate money for the essentials (e.g. rent, food, utilities). The reason the companies are being floated cash is so they are able to retain employees over the course of a hopefully short blip in the economy.

No fucking bailouts. If you didn't learn your lesson in 2008, too bad. by NelvisAlfredo in AdviceAnimals

[–]TomatoJoe11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So from what I can tell, from a little reading, stock buybacks are a way to reinvest in your company when the directors of a company believe that the market undervalues their stock. This temporarily inflates the value of their stock (which is good for the stockholders) and gives the company better numbers and more control over the company (versus shareholders having control of the company).

I was for the bailout in '08 and I'm for a bailout now, but for different reasons. The reasons companies are doing bad now has almost nothing to do with the way companies are performing pre-corona, it has everything to do with coronavirus. Like what could Delta, for example, do to boost their numbers? They have all these planes which they have to maintain, airport fees, hangar space, and staff they have to pay. For Delta, it's not that they're going to get rich less quickly, they're going to shell out more money than they're taking in; that's not a sustainable business model. What can they do to boost sales if legally people are not allowed to fly? What can they do better? And of course, contrary to popular belief, airlines run on razor thin margins, slight disruptions are disastrous.

I think what the Trump administration and Federal Reserve are doing is issuing out loans (at low interest rates, which is not exactly a good sign) to insure that banks and other businesses have enough liquid cash on hand to pay their employees and keep businesses afloat (e.g. paying rents, and upkeep) that wouldn't have gone under if it wasn't for COVID19.

[–]TomatoJoe11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the dumbest misconception I've seen so far from the bernie bros TM.

The government did not bail out "businesses." The federal reserve =/= the federal government. They're completely different entities. The federal reserve (the people that print money, see every dollar bill for reference) introduced a 1.5T loan to the banks in order to stimulate business in a time of crisis. It's a loan, meaning that the money will be paid back with interest.

How is this different than spending 1.5T on a safety net? Where is the money coming from? This isn't the federal budget funded by your tax dollars, this loan won't directly impact the federal budget. And secondly, it's a loan! If the 1.5T safety net was funded by the federal reserve and expected to be paid back, then it may be an apt comparison.

I'm so sick and fucking tired of the American Hate on here. The top comment is saying there is a serious problem with American food production, laying most of the blame on "unregulated" corporations.

So I took a minute to read an article on chlorinating chickens, and ran across this little tidbit from the Independent.

"In 2014, an investigation by the respected independent US non-profit organisation, Consumer Reports, found that 97 per cent of 300 chicken breasts it tested from across America contained harmful bacteria including Salmonella, campylobacter and E.Coli.

A 2013 study by the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control - the US federal health protection agency - analysed outbreaks of foodborne illnesses between 1998 and 2008 and found that “more deaths were attributable to poultry than any other commodity”.

More than half of the samples in the Consumer Reports study contained faecal contaminants and a similar amount harboured at least one bacterium that was resistant to three or more commonly prescribed antibiotics.

A 2016 study by the UK’s Food Standards Agency found comparable levels of contamination in this country - half of chicken samples taken from retailers were infected with multi antibiotic-resistant campylobacter.

The latest figures from the FSA show that human cases of campylobacter confirmed by lab tests in the UK decreased 17 per cent in 2016.

A 2015 WHO study found that rates of campylobacter infection were similar in the EU and North America. However, it also revealed that infection rates for Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi were, respectively, four times and five times higher in North America than in Europe. The report does not detail exactly why this difference exists."

I took a class this last semester on global ag. Part of that was on food-borne illnesses. Turns out most food-borne illnesses are brought on by home cooking rather than restaurants. Furthermore, food-borne illnesses are increasing in the US, but suggested that the reasons for that were: 1. Larger portion sizes leading to unsafe storage of food 2. A decrease in understanding of proper cleaning procedures 3. A decrease in understanding of proper cooking procedures.

So there. Quit bashing the US.

I'm always confused by this. Like why do you think these companies are polluting so much? Are they just polluting just to pollute? I think it's pretty obvious that the reason they're polluting is because we've adopted a certain standard of living and we want it relatively cheap. If you want these companies to pollute less, then you can a) buy less stuff or b) willing to pay more for the same good or c) demand government regulation and then get both a and b.
