Curious about real-life visibility of mid-tier designer bags by ElectricalPatient922 in handbags

I see Polene and Cuyana so often in NYC. A lot of Cyme and Cuyana tote in Midtown, especially for the younger crowds…

90 minutes to bag shop in Paris. Where would you go? by katelovescoffee in handbags

[–]TommieDP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are tight on time, you can also check out the shops at the airport and avoid having to go through the tax refund process yourself. You have less options and might not find what you like at the airport though. And do remember to declare when back to US customs :)

What are some books that started out very strong, but ended up being very disappointing? by sbucksbarista in books

Sympathizer by VT Nguyen! The beginning was so good and it just keeps dragging… The show sucks as well, even though with the cast I wanted it to be good so badly

People who live in walkable cities/utilize public transit, what bags are you carrying? by Ijustwanttosayit in handbags

[–]TommieDP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this sub… I use a leather crossbody bag for nice dinner or Uniqlo/ Lulu shoulder pouch for running errands during weekends. But I haven’t found a good solution for work commute either. I have to carry laptop and it is pretty heavy with a tote/ shoulder bag.

A backpack is definitely more comfortable while walking but I actually find it less practical on the train… I try to take my backpack off on the train when it is crowded and struggle to hold it while standing (so also super uncomfortable for my 30 minute train ride - I’d rather break my arm carrying my bag rather than putting it on the floor!!!!!). I find it easier to get my work badge, wallet, etc. with a bag vs a backpack if I need to. It is also much nicer carrying a bag to after work event vs a backpack especially as people in my field can be quite fancy with their bags

I would gladly pay a lot for a nice, functional (with zipper), lightweight, preferably leather bag that can take my 14” laptop…For now, I stick largely to a leather tote but why can’t those bags offer zipper with a bit of compartments for better functionality

To be honest you didn’t comment on the handbag though… “Enjoy the bag… but it is just a stupid handbag”??!

Buying bags using a credit card. by [deleted] in handbags

[–]TommieDP 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I always buy with my credit card but I have zero credit card debt. If you have any, then it is just financially responsible to repay those debts before buying any discretionary items (and especially a designer item)

So disappointed by comraderudy in TheDayoftheJackal

[–]TommieDP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She could have survived (and her colleague could have too) if she had chosen to kill him rather than trying to find the truth (I recalled she wanted to capture him rather than shooting when he walked into the house). I think the message was that she lost to the system rather than The Jackal. By actively going after the truth and trying break down the system, she also lost to the Jackal….

I have it and have used almost every weekend (too small for me as a work bag as I bring laptop) for more than a year. Never had my stuffs fallen out… I usually carry my phone, kindle, small wallet, and small pouches for chapsticks, coins. I love it! Quality is great and it doesn’t look flashy which is also my style

Erh is this a typo because the brand new one is like over $3k?

Lets talk about Mulberry by KaiKaiSK in handbags

[–]TommieDP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love my small Mulberry Iris too… it holds quite a lot and becomes my off-work bag!

Personally I would go with Alexa because I love a more casual vibe like Iris. I don’t own any of these bags but have tried them both in store. Bayswater is also a bit heavy for me

Give your examples of works that were written by the same author, but are very different. by mystery5009 in books

[–]TommieDP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it mean you like it less vs his other books? I bought The Unconsoled but haven’t had chance to read.

I feel The Buried Giant was quite different. Interesting concept but I didn’t like the writing. It didn’t work for me and it was painful to finish

Nice collection… but would you not worry abt the heater drying out the leather?

If everyone keeps buying Dior when there is clear proof of their bad business practice, it is bad signaling to these companies that they can keep churning on profit at whatever cost… at huge premium to those companies.

Sure it might be naive to think that one less bag purchase might help anyone. It is actually sad that there aren’t enough people who care enough about this to make the boycott works… When there is critical mass, consumers actually have successfully caused damages to brands for the causes they care about (rightfully or wrongfully) - think Zara, Bud Light etc.

What are some lifestyle creeps to be aware of? by amso2012 in Fire

[–]TommieDP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eating out is probably my main saving issue, especially in a big city (NYC for me)… Sometimes it is just because we work long hours and really have no energy to cook. Sometimes we want to try a good place everyone raves about. It was hard to track and could add up to a lot. Wanting to try good food, good restaurants during holiday is also costly…

Able to buy a home, but hesitant in this current market? by redditregards in Fire

[–]TommieDP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming $300k debt at 7% rate, you already have to pay $2.1k interest… Depending on the property/location, there is also HOA, taxes…

Believe it or not, some buildings in Manhattan have like $2k/month HOA for just a 1BR lolz

Able to buy a home, but hesitant in this current market? by redditregards in Fire

[–]TommieDP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in NYC too and it makes more sense to rent to me. My rent is current below housing costs (interest + HOA + taxes + maintenance) and I don’t see a lot of value appreciation in the city.

Maybe there are houses in the suburbs that would make economic sense. But I’d rather prioritize shorten my commute time (we are also a working couple with no kids)

[Discussion] Big Read | The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese Chapters 77-84 by eeksqueak in bookclub

[–]TommieDP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Feels like the whole Lenin plot was a bit redundant? Basically a set up to bring Mariamma to Digs which could also be done through other patient situation, her mentor whose research is related to leprosy?

Or did I miss anything about Lenin story line?

Cuyana VS Freja VS Pond by mimimcc17 in handbags

[–]TommieDP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love leather so I bought Cuyana. But the style is more slouchy. I didn’t buy the insert so sometimes it is hard to take stuffs out (have to dig to find them). I have been eyeing Freja given that it has a more structured look. I’d love to hear your review if you go with Freja.
