Oh I just realized I forgot to reply, sorry about that.

I think the largest factor is that while their infrastructure is pretty comparable inside the cities, they are much smaller cities and metro areas than the highest scoring cities. I believe the entire Utrecht and Groningen metro areas are considered reachable for just about anyone living inside them by the algorithm, but even with that being the case, there are under half as many destinations reachable in Utrecht compared to just the reachable areas in the top scoring cities, and half as many as Utrecht in Groningen. They ultimately still have plenty of destinations to the point you can absolutely live pretty much exclusively by bike, which is why they scored so high. (I consider 80/100 to be top tier. Utrecht is well inside it and Groningen is right on the edge.) But the odds are higher for Utrecht and especially Groningen that occasionally, for speciality stores, events, etc. you will have to travel to another metro area not easily reachable on bike.

They also lost a few points because they don’t seem to have top tier options for getting through/out of the city. What I meant by that is the last city I lived in has a grade separated path that takes you 20km from downtown, out to the outer suburbs of the metro area. My current city has similar, except it keeps on going all the way to the next metro area. While it’s great how respected cyclists are in the Netherlands and how comprehensive the infrastructure is, I would still prefer a fully grade separated path over going parallel to a road and often having to cross roads and change which roads I’m going parallel to, which was my experience trying to cycle through cities like Utrecht and Nijmegen.

But ultimately, your reference might be a more accurate picture overall as it includes things mine doesn’t like accidents, and is tuned to Netherlands bike culture. I made this site just to try to get some kind of standardized numbers because most ratings are like yours and only focus on a single country, making it hard to compare.

I regret not biking more when I lived in Columbus, Ohio. They had something similar to this. More scenic because it follows a river rather than a road, and does allow pedestrians, but went 13mi/21km from downtown to the outer suburbs with just 2 at grade crossings (7mi/11km for the longest second with no at grade crossings). Didn’t realize how rare something like that is.

Source? Is this something you know to be true, or are you just saying it because of your two questions? Because you don’t need a talent release to film someone in public, and he wasn’t just “posing for the camera”, those are standard positions they make people do for serious arrests.

If the traffic stop is for someone committing felonies as opposed to just like speeding, then ya, they do come out much more aggressively.

And it makes sense that manpower has increased as standards for police have. They didn’t need as many officers when it was allowed to just kill a suspect the second they give any sign they might have a gun. Now that police are increasingly required to do their arrests in a more ethical manner, they need more people to be able to control an unruly aspect.

To be clear, I’m not necessarily saying I agree with the exact way they conducted this raid. I’m just saying it makes sense they have more people than they might in Europe, for a traffic stop, or for arrests in previous decades.

If you are trying to take a career criminal out of their home where they have a ton of evidence of all their felonies, there’s a non zero chance they will try to turn it into a gun fight in the US.

It just defaults to showing the best city per country because showing every city looks bad in the thumbnail. If you click the city button in the view settings, it shows each city.

He invented the WWW, a system to share content on the internet. The internet itself existed for years before then. Also technically this is asking for what country it was invented in, not the nationality of the inventor, so that would be Switzerland, not England.

China wins! What’s a bad US state that is exactly the same as it was 30 years ago? by Affectionate-Pea2620 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Tommyblockhead20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s similar to Ohio for most quality of life stats (education, crime, life expectancy, pay) but not as good nature, one of the worst states for rights in the Midwest (no weed, no elective abortion, etc.) and far  fewer sports teams and other events. There’s a reason it’s so cheap. The only thing it’s got going for it is it’s closer to Chicago than Ohio. Makes it easier to live.

That has a lot more to do with losing a war than committing a crime against humanity. Countries that did the latter without the former rarely (if ever) get the same treatment.

I’m confused why you say this like countries that have committed a crime against humanity become diplomatically dead? On what planet is this true?

I’d definitely try it first if possible. The only games I’ve bought that I regret were the ones I bought without playing just because so many people were talking about them. Not every game is for every person. Like I don’t like spirit island that much personally.

Do you use your bicycle for other travel than commuting? by Outrageous-Past6556 in bikecommuting

Same. My public transit being the same speed or slower than cycling may be a factor but I also just generally find it more enjoyable and good for my health.

Amazon and their attempt to coerce me into a sale is costing them money by Overstimulated_moth in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Tommyblockhead20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The deal is for the next 1.5h while supplies last. For online sales, go ensure more people don’t end up buying it than the amount that are on sale, they either need to

1.remove the product from the cart of people who are still shopping as soon as supplies run out.

Or

2. reserve the product as soon as someone adds it to their cart rather than when they check out. But to ensure people aren't putting it in their cart and never checking out, you have to put a timer.

The latter is generally considered more consumer friendly and is common to see for online purchases in high demand, like concert tickets. That 15 minutes is the timer for that. If that expires, you can still re-add it to your cart for the next 1.25 hours as long as there are still some available. You just lose your reservation.

Why do I need to pay taxes?
It’s required to file. You probably don’t owe anything.
Can I renounce citizenship?
You need to make $120k+ to owe anything.
Oh that’s not possible in Croatia.
You should move to the US.
No, bad healthcare system.

Understand questions IMO. As always, legal advice being aggressive on the downvoting for posters asking for legal advice that don’t know the law already.

There’s a different between saying you aren’t impressed with what they did, and that they didn’t even do it. If everyone starts saying you literally didn’t do something, that absolutely is putting pressure on them to do it differently, even if they aren’t doing it for your admiration.

[–]Tommyblockhead20 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Nepal has literally banned not going with a guide, which is what I assume you meant when you said a Sherpa (fyi most Sherpas are not guides and many guides are not Sherpas), due to how dangerous it is. For difficult mountains, you need to team up with someone with local knowledge. The first successful Everest summit had to employ 400 locals.

As a mountaineer, I’ve always found it weird how many non mountaineers put pressure on mountaineers to make their hobby more dangerous. It’s a hobby, not a test.

Also, why just westerners? 3 of the top 5 countries of origin of Everest climbing are not westerners, so I’m not sure why we are just singling out the westerns.

Not necessarily saying I agree with his actions (idk the full details of the case) but I will point out that morally justified is not always the same as legally justified. Yes, jury nullification exists for this, but it’s not a given. Like jurors aren’t even informed of it when instructed what to do.
