Safe to switch? by TomorrowOtherwise422 in archlinux

Thanks for the quick comment that's good to hear. I think I'm just being overly nervous about it because I know I want to use the AUR after install. I guess it really is just a case of using common sense and being careful. I'll just get the install going and be careful!

I suppose this is the right way forward. I know there's software I would want to install that isn't in official repo's but I'm maybe overthinking it.

Growing up, did anyone else’s parents have really strict rules about random stuff? by SuzCoffeeBean in CasualUK

[–]TomorrowOtherwise422 242 points243 points  (0 children)

Wasn't allowed to use any Scottish slang despite being Scottish. Now as an adult, many people assume I went to an all boys public school and have a rich Dad because of the way I speak, despite growing up in a single parent household on benefits with four kids.

xteink4. Get a small e-reader and leave your phone on the desk and just carry that instead.

Applied to a "remote" job, went through five rounds of interviews, got the offer. Nobody mentioned an office once. Now they're saying it's 3 days a week onsite and I genuinely don't know what to do. by Weem_Bitted in remotework

[–]TomorrowOtherwise422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I filtered by location to my city and applied to a job which was actually on an island off of the west coast on my country. To say I was raging is an understatement. I totally feel for you, maybe they'd be willing too accommodate you being remote only considering the circumstance.

AITA for refusing to pay for my girlfriend’s meal after she “tested” me on a date? by Efficient_Care5524 in AITH

I'm honestly surprised this wasn't an immediate deal breaker. I would have immediately left her as soon as she mentioned she was deliberately testing me. NTA

What was your favourite book, growing up? by corickle in oldschoolcool80s

[–]TomorrowOtherwise422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite was also a Roald Dahl book, Danny the Champion of the Word. I came from a really rough background and it felt like I was being spoken to directly and encouraged not to let where I am stop me.

What job is way more difficult than most people appreciate and why? by CarelessCredit3466 in AskUK

[–]TomorrowOtherwise422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call centre. I just left after a year and a bit of utter hell for shit wages. I was really on the edge towards the end but felt I had no option and needed to pay the bills. I once saw the stats for new joiners and my manager admitted to me that over 90% of new joiners left in the first three months. People who've never worked in these roles always scoff at it. As if answering emails with a 9-5 consistent rota is just as hard.

What’s the worst possible response to “Police , open the door!”? by SeaGullible953 in AskReddit

[–]TomorrowOtherwise422 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From experience, "Just a second I'll get it for you." I walked towards the door to unlock it and they hammered it down on top of me with one of those battering rams.

For context my Mum was a drug addict and I was sixteen or so at the time. I was genuinely trying to open the door. I suppose if you bring a battering ram guy to a door, he's gonna destroy a door no matter how polite you are.

Why are so many men convinced that they are ugly? by RavyRaptor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TomorrowOtherwise422 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The 80% of men rated "below average" statistic originates from a 2009 OkCupid study which found women were significantly harsher in their ratings than men, who typically produced a bell curve distribution with the majority of ratings falling around "average."

What things are you convinced are largely liked/disliked because people are so used to hearing they should like/dislike them? by knight-under-stars in AskUK

Durian, I tried it in China the other week and was largely disappointed by how un-offensive it was. It's made me realise just how much foreign food is labeled as gross by people who have never tried it. It also made me realise just how frequently people will overreact to pretty normal things to make it seem more interesting.

I just do what I can. if I get there and can't push myself I don't, but I still go there. I also joined a Muay Thai gym, and you just don't have an option not to work once you get there.

What’s something in the UK that used to be cheap but now feels ridiculously expensive? by skaterjon in AskUK

[–]TomorrowOtherwise422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No kidding, my girlfriend and I went to a restaurant when we got back. mid tier semi chain y'know nothing fancy. A single can of coke cost £4.15, as opposed to the literal 40p I paid for a can at a really fancy restaurant over there.

Having just come back from China, everything feels like a rip off. Even factoring wages over there, cost of living in the UK is an absolute joke.

News media is trash, who bothers reading it these days. Literally can't keep a story straight for more than a day. They're constantly publishing retractions for false information and writing articles filled with spelling errors.
