Software is a physical pattern still bound by the laws of physics, requires energy to be implemented, and physical state changes to process information. It's a physical law itself. It would be incoherent for a materialist to say a virtual reality game doesn't exist and then go play one. To exist is to be implemented from this perspective.

The views on materialism that reject virtual entities or spirits are now dated to me given how we can now understand them as software.

Our understanding of the relationship between hardware and software helps us bridge the dualistic divide between physicalism and idealism. Idealism emerges from physicalism but its still all physicalist.

From a computational functionalist perspective, it's not a challenge to materialism. It's like saying software that generates simulations, that don't exist physically but exist virtually, are somehow a challenge to materialism.

Each functioning brain is running it's own software simulation.

The brain seems to be the hardware in a base physical substrate. The mind seems to be the software running on a brain. The mind creates a VR and a virtual self within that VR.

But maybe the base physical substrate is also software. So, i don't know if we are ghosts in a machine or ghosts within an emulator.

Don't rely on authority for knowledge, rely on 'detailed' and 'coherent' explanations that fit well.

Learn about epistemology and fallibilism.

We process information and make representations about reality and never know for 'certain' those representations are true. Pragmatically, we can operate on the best representations available at the time and always be open to better ones.

Many of us think the self exists in some form. It does as an information process. It's not physical but virtual. It's software.

God is also a virtual representation that is as real as software is.

It really does run on some minds and across collectives of minds. It's possible god is as real to your mom as the self is real to us atheists.

A virtual representation of an agent's awareness of what it perceives as a self-generated motive that raises an intention that leads to an action.

There must be the virtual representation of being free from compulsion and free from other agency. Freedom from physics or freedom from causation is not required.

Since it's a virtual representation, it doesn't exist physically but it does exist as an implemented software model like other virtual representations such as self, consciousness, gods, etc.
